Anderson Varejao hyperextended his left knee during the Cleveland Cavaliers' loss to the Phoenix Suns Sunday and could miss their game against the New Orleans Pelicans Tuesday, reports Bob Finnan of The News-Herald. Tyler Zeller is expected to start if Varejao sits out the final game of a five-game homestand.
Varejao's health has been a concern throughout his career. This is the first time since the 2009-10 season that he's played in over 35 games. The high-energy big man appeared in just 25 games in each of the past two seasons.
He's playing his lowest minutes per game average in three seasons but continues to be a very productive role player in Cleveland's frontcourt. Varejao is averaging 10.3 rebounds per game, good for ninth overall in the NBA. He's also averaging 8.8 points per game.
Cleveland is currently two games out from the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference and begins a three-game road trip on Thursday.
