Hedo Turkoglu will be waived by Magic

The Orlando Magic are expected to waive veteran Hedo Turkoglu on Friday.

The Orlando Magic will waive forward Hedo Turkoglu at 5 p.m. on Friday, reports the Orlando Sentinel's Brian K. Schmitz. The roster move is a long time coming for the Magic, who have retained the veteran forward -- his contract especially -- as a potential trade chip.

By waiving him before Jan. 7, the Magic pay Turkoglu only half of the a fully-guaranteed contract worth $12 million. Since the decision comes before that date, it's clear Orlando saw no trade options with the veteran, who was a big part of their 2009 NBA Finals team -- he had played for Phoenix and Toronto before finding his way back to Orlando.

Turkoglu will be a free agent Jan. 10 after clearing waivers. ESPN's Marc Stein reported Thursday that Turkoglu has been working out individually in preparation to make an NBA return.

Turkoglu played in only 11 games in 2012-13 due to injury and a 20-game suspension for violating the NBA's anti-doping policy, but the 34-year-old forward has not joined the team this season with Orlando giving playing time to youngsters Maurice Harkless and Tobias Harris.
