Minnesota Timberwolves assigning Shabazz Muhammad to D-league

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Timberwolves' rookie is heading to the D-league.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are assigning 2013 first-round draft pick Shabazz Muhammad to the D-League, Flip Saunders revealed on KFAN radio (h/t @thedailywolf).

More on the Timberwolves

The Timberwolves are affiliated with the Iowa Energy, along with the Wizards, Bulls, Nuggets and Pelicans. Muhammad has played minimally this season, appearing in just 11 games for a total of 42 minutes. The Timberwolves acquired him, trading down to the 14th pick and sending Trey Burke to the Utah Jazz. Muhammad has averaged 1.1 points and 0.7 rebounds per game in his limited playing time.

The D-League could be good for Muhammad, providing him an opportunity to play and develop. He had played in three of the team's last four games after playing in just seven previous games. Muhammad was also kicked out of the NBA's rookie transition program for violating rules during the event.

Minnesota is expecting Chase Budinger to return from his knee injury soon, and Saunders also said he will be re-evaluated on Monday.
