Knicks not quick to bite on Steve Kerr's contract expectations

The New York Knicks aren't ready to doll out a hefty five-year contract to Steve Kerr, who is green in the head coaching department.

Steve Kerr seems set on joining the New York Knicks as head coach, but according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, there's been a snag over the details. The franchise is not ready to hand out a salary the length or amount that the untested Kerr is seeking.

The New York Post's Marc Berman reported that Kerr is looking for a five-year, $30 million deal that is similar to a four-year contract the Knicks signed Mike D'Antoni to two hires ago. The price range is high for any NBA coach, let alone one without any experience as an assistant.

It gets more complicated.

The Golden State Warriors, Kerr's other top option, have seemingly moved on from chasing after Kerr. Wojnarowski reports the two sides haven't spoken in days, and it seems that owner Joe Lacob has come to terms with former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy being the top choice. Former Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins is also in the mix for the Warriors.

The bidding war has suddenly quieted a bit, but it appears that Kerr is still in line to get the negotiations finished up shortly. Berman reports the contract is still expected to be agreed upon this week and that the delays could simply be a result of how Kerr's agent, Mike Tannenbaum, operates. His negotiating practices are regarded to be "hard-nosed."
