Cleveland Cavaliers scheduling coaching interviews soon, according to report

USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland is still searching for its sideline ace.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are still searching for Mike Brown's replacement and will be scheduling coaching interviews soon, according to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports. Amicks reports that Alvin Gentry, Adrian Griffin, Vinny Del Negro and "others" are expected to be interviewed.

Gentry, currently an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers, is considered the leading candidate, according to Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal, because of his Phoenix Suns ties to new Cavaliers general manager David Griffin. Gentry led the 2009-10 Suns to 54 wins and the Western Conference Finals.

Gentry is an offensive-minded coach who was brought to the Clippers to help on that end of the floor. It worked, too. The Clippers were the No. 1 offensive team in the regular season, scoring 112.1 points per 100 possessions, via Basketball-Reference. The 2009-10 Suns were also the league's top scoring offense, netting 115.3 points per 100 possessions.

When Brown was fired, USA Today's Jeff Zillgit and Amick reported that Adrian Griffin had emerged as a leading candidate, too. Griffin has been an assistant coach under Tom Thibodeau in Chicago since 2010. Before that, he worked under Scott Skiles for two seasons in Milwaukee.

Del Negro coached the Bulls from 2008-10 and the Clippers from 2010-13. His name comes as a bit of a surprise. He was dismissed by the Bulls after winning just 41 games in back-to-back seasons. Del Negro had more success with the Clippers, winning 128 games in a three-year stretch, however much of that success was credited to Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.

The "others" that the Cavaliers might interview could come from the college ranks. Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Wednesday that Cleveland is "aggressively mining the college ranks in their coaching search."
