Stan Van Gundy, Warriors have mutual interest in head coaching job, per reports

Doug Pensinger

Van Gundy hasn't coached since the 2011-12 season, but his system could be a good fit in Golden State and he has ties to the area.

The Golden State Warriors have contacted Stan Van Gundy about their open head coaching position, and the former NBA headmaster is interested in the job, according to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports and Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today.

The Warriors' head coaching job opened up after the team fired Mark Jackson on Tuesday despite two straight trips to the postseason. Jackson didn't get along with many people in the front office, and there was also some dysfunction on his coaching staff.

Mark Jackson Firing

Golden State wants to hit a home run with the next hire to prove that firing Jackson wasn't a mistake, and Van Gundy would be a big splash. Van Gundy hasn't coached since being let go by the Orlando Magic after the 2011-12 season, preferring to remain in his position as an analyst on both television and radio.

But the Warriors' job is an attractive one because of the talent in place, and Van Gundy's offensive system could be a good fit for that talent. Van Gundy also does have ties to the area, as he went to high school just 30 miles outside of Oakland.

Van Gundy has a 371-208 regular-season record in seven-plus seasons with the Magic and Miami Heat. His playoff mark is 48-39, and he guided the Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals.
