Cavaliers rush to complete trade in effort to clear max cap space 'immediately'

Andy Lyons

The Cavaliers rushed to complete paperwork on their cap-clearing deal from Wednesday. Was the immediate need for cap space related to their pursuit of LeBron James?

On Wednesday, the Cavaliers cleared enough cap space for a maximum contract when they agreed to a three-way trade with Boston and Brooklyn. While the deal was agreed upon, the paperwork can take some time. Cleveland, however, pressured the Nets and Celtics to get the deal finalized "immediately" according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The rush to clear cap space will create speculation the Cavs are clearing room to sign LeBron James.

Rumors continue to fly all over the map while James and his camp remain silent. Some are speculating he's likely to head back to the Cavs and the rush to get the deal done could certainly add fuel to that fire. Free agents can officially sign their deals now, meaning the Cavs would want immediate cap space if James chooses Cleveland. They have it now, with the three-team trade that sent Jarrett Jack and Sergey Karasev to Brooklyn and Marcus Thornton, Tyler Zeller and a first-round pick to Boston, now complete.

There is a chance the effort to get the deal done immediately isn't tied to James at all. It's at least possible the Cavs had concerns of the deal falling through and wanted to make sure it was finalized before any loose ends could unravel. Either way, the Cavs now have space for a maximum contract and the LeBron James watch continues.
