Allen was acquired by Indiana in the mid-season trade that sent Danny Granger to the Philadelphia 76ers for Evan Turner. Allen was rarely used in Indiana, appearing in 14 games and averaging eight minutes per stint. Across 51 games for Philadelphia earlier in the season, Allen averaged 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
The 25-year-old Allen gives the Pacers insurance in the front court should they decide to waive Luis Scola, who has an unguaranteed contract for $4.8 million next season. The goal for the Pacers will be bringing back shooting guard Lance Stephenson while avoiding the luxury tax. It appears to be impossible to do both.
Before the Allen contract, the Pacers were reportedly less than $8 million below the tax. Stephenson has already turned down a five-year, $44 million offer from Indiana and continues to gauge the market.
