Lance Stephenson explores free agency options, upset with Pacers' offer

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Indiana Pacers guard Lance Stephenson is looking for new places to land, including the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers.

Turned off by what was taken as a "low-ball" offer from the Indiana Pacers , Lance Stephenson has begun to explore the free agent market, according to sources of ESPN's Chris Broussard.

Indiana offered their young guard a five-year, $44 million deal to re-sign with the franchise that drafted him 40th overall in 2010, but Stephenson has options if he believes he can get more elsewhere. The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks have showed interest in signing the 23-year-old guard but those teams have other free agents prioritized ahead of him.

Free Agency Fodder

Offers might not start rolling in until LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and other top-tier free agents sign, but once the ball gets rolling Dallas could be an intriguing landing spot. Broussard reports the Mavs have long looked at Houston Rockets free agent Chandler Parsons and considered veteran Luol Deng to shore up the wing, but Stephenson has become a man of interest in the past few weeks. The Lakers will wait on Anthony and James before they make a formal offer to a player like Stephenson.

It's believed that Stephenson has wanted to return to Indiana, and perhaps the Pacers' offer could improve if they can somehow free up salary cap space by making a trade.

As Stephenson and the Pacers remain far apart on a deal, Indiana has continued to spend money. President Larry Bird has agreed to sign forwards Lavoy Allen, Damjan Rudez and swingman C.J. Miles in the first week of the free agency period.
