John Jenkins Impresses At Vegas Summer League

The Vegas Summer League wrapped up over the weekend and Hawks rookie John Jenkins impressed by playing to his strengths. Despite being picked with the 23rd pick of the first round, Jenkins exited summer league ranked as the 12th overall player at summer league by SB Nation.

12. John Jenkins, Hawks

He's one-dimensional, but boy is he proficient at that one dimension. He spent most of the week curling off screens and taking long jumpers, but he still managed to shoot over 50 percent from the field. He was especially impressive going against aggressive defenders like Washington's Bradley Beal and Dallas' Dominique Jones. Despite being undersized, he has a hyper-quick release, much like former Hornets star Dell Curry. I look forward to tracking his development, especially with Kyle Korver as a mentor.

Jenkins was projected by many as a late-first or early second round selection but at this point it looks like the Hawks have themselves a solid pick.

Bill Simmons: Deron Williams To Dallas 'Is A Lock'

Tucked away in a footnote in Bill Simmons' latest NBA mega-post on Grantland is this interesting little tidbit:

Nobody feels sorry for [Deron Williams] because he ruined the last year of Jerry Sloan's career, and for that he remains in NBA Purgatory - at least until he signs with Dallas this summer. We're all supposed to pretend this might not happen even though it's a bigger summer lock than Michael Phelps winning a gold medal. I haven't talked to one person "In the Know" who isn't 100 percent convinced that Dallas is getting him. But let's all keep pretending this isn't true.

If the Mavericks amnesty Brendan Haywood and decline Lamar Odom's team option, they would only have five players under contract: Dirk, Shawn Marion, Rodrigue Beaubois, Brandan Wright and Dominique Jones.

It's hard to know how seriously to take the chatter Simmons is passing along, but it certainly makes the summer of 2012 more interesting for Dallas fans.

Thoughts On The Mavericks Second Preseason Game

The Mavericks fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder 87-84 Tuesday night.

Jason Terry and Delonte West fell victims to the stomach bug that has spread around camp while Vince Carter was rested in favor of Dominique Jones.

Here are a few things that stood out from the Mavericks final preseason game.

Dominique Jones drew the start at the shooting guard position and was effective. He once again attacked the basket and drew fouls consistently. The knock on him has been finishing at the rim and consistently knocking down his jump shot. His court vision continues to be excellent and his ability to run the break has been superb in the two preseason games. My only concern is this; getting calls going to the basket is going to be a lot tougher during the regular season. And with no jump shot, he's going to be limited offensively. However, his court vision alone makes him an asset to this team this season.

With the departure of Tyson Chandler the spotlight has been on Brendan Haywood and Ian Mahinmi to start the season and through two games, the results have not been pretty. Mahinmi was consistently caught out of position on defense and bullied by the likes of Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka .And on offense he was hesitant one time, too aggressive the next and wild throughout. The starting center, Haywood, has been invisible. His spacing on offense has been problematic and his defense has been subpar. I'm not going to use a preseason performance as an indicator of what will happen in the regular season but, considering the void he knows he has to fill this year, showing up in either game would have been nice.

Two bright spots from the game were Brandon Wright and Jerome Randle. Wright displayed the offensive arsenal that made him the number eight overall pick in the draft. He flashed a midrange jumper, a lefty layup, a floater and had a nice put back dunk. His defense left a little to be desired but he was able to hold his own on the boards. Randle used his speed to cut to the basket a couple of times, used the glass on a couple of midrange jumpers and hit a couple of threes. He's shown the ability to play at this level but I'd be more interested in stashing him in the D-league and getting him playing time than wasting him as the 14^th or 15^th guy on the bench.

The Mavericks will now have four days to get their conditioning up to speed and rotations ready before they raise that banner and welcome the Miami Heat to open the regular season on Christmas Day.

Jason Terry got a tattoo of the Larry O'Brien Trophy before the season began, and the Dallas Mavericks made him look like a genius by winning the NBA championship on Sunday. To celebrate, rookie guard Dominique Jones took Terry's idea further, tattooing the same trophy on his neck to permanently remember that he is, in fact, a champion.
