They face a Nets team with a few players with NBA experience in Marshon Brooks, Al Thornton, Julian Wright, and Adam Morrison. In fact, the Nets boast the only 2 time champion in Summer League in Adam Morrison. The Nets lost their first game to the Magic, 92-88.

In their first game, a 73-65 win over OKC, Jared Sullinger, E'Twaun Moore, Kris Joseph, and Dionte Christmas stood out for their solid play. I expect that we will see more of the same today from these players as all 4 showed good fundamentals and hopefully can build on that start in today's game. We should see more from Fab Melo, Sean Williams, and JaJuan Johnson in today's game as well.

Doc and Danny were on hand yesterday to observe and evaluate while Tyronn Lue did the coaching. The evaluation will continue in this game as decisions have to be made concerning several of the players on the team. For the fans, though, it's just fun to be watching Celtics basketball again.

Continuing with the series of in-depth divisional breakdowns that started earlier today with a look at the Bantamweight division (read it here) and then the Featherweight division (read it here), we move on to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight division.

With the world's leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion in the middle of one of its longest stretches of down time in months, (and with the summer season jam-packed with events), I thought now would be the perfect opportunity to take an in-depth look at all the divisions to clearly identify who is in the title picture, who isn't, who is building themselves into a contender and whose jobs are on the line.

The UFC is essentially an endlessly on-going tournament, with two brackets: One for match winners and one for match losers. Just about the only time that Joe Silva and Dana White match up a guy coming off a win with a guy coming off a loss is if the guy coming off a loss was fighting for a title. Otherwise, it's almost always winner vs winner and loser vs loser.

It's a pretty sensible way of doing things, ensuring that there will always be guys with a few wins in a row and others with a couple of losses in a row, opening up the chance for new blood to enter into the company.

So anytime you are looking at a division and trying to see what the future will hold, it's mandatory to know who are the fighter's on win streaks and who are the fighters on losing streaks. As such, I've been organizing each division by wins and losses for a few months now and throughout today I'll be posting up my take on each division based on this data. I'm not going to be doing an in-depth feature on the flyweight division, as there has only been two fights in the division thus far.

Therefore, we move on to the Lightweight division (155 pounds):

(**Wins/Losses include World Extreme Cagefighting fights**)

Five Wins: Jacob Volkmann
Four Wins: Ben Henderson, Edson Barboza
Three Wins: Gleison Tibau, Anthony Ferguson
Two Wins: Anthony Pettis, Nate Diaz, Evan Dunham, Danny Castillo, Paul Sass, Thiago Tavares
One Win: Mark Bocek, Jim Miller, T.J.
The lightweight division is in an interesting spot. There hasn't been a dominant champion since B.J. Penn held the title and the guy with the most wins in a row is, gasp, Jacob Volkmann! Making things even more interesting is that because of 2011 being all about Frankie Edgar/Gray Maynard, a handful of perennial contenders are in the losers bracket, having been forced to fight amongst themselves while "The Answer" and "The Bully" settled their score. Jim Miller and Nate Diaz would seem to be fighting each other for the next shot, but this division has seen so many bait and switches that nothing is set in stone.

BOOKED FIGHTS:

Bernardo Magalhaes vs Henry Martinez, UFC on FX 3

Gray Maynard vs Clay Guida, UFC on FX 4

Ben Henderson vs Frank Edgar, Event Unknown

There is a bunch of fights set to go down in the next few months at 155 pounds and just about every top guy will be involved. Indeed, of the 11 fighters with multiple win streaks going, only Anthony Pettis and Gleison Tibau are awaiting a fight. Not only that, but all the top guys that are coming off a single loss have dance cards as well (Donald Cerrone, Clay Guida, Gray Maynard and, of course, Frankie Edgar). There will several cool match ups made possible after these fights, too many to list, but I'm particularly interested in seeing who comes out of Dunham/Barboza, Volkmann/Sass, Maynard/Guida and Ferguson/Tavares. Those four fights right there could easily be isolated as eight-man tournament with the winner coming out as a possible title challenger.

UNBOOKED WINNERS:

Gleison Tibau, Anthony Pettis, Sean Sherk, Michael Johnson, Paul Taylor, Dennis Hallman, Ramsey Nijem, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Fabricio Camoes, Tim Means, Justin Salas

I can see the reason Anthony Pettis badly wanted to get a title shot, as there really isn't much out there for him right now. Does he go up against Tibau? Not much for him to gain there. What about Sean Sherk, who has only fought once in the last 15 months? Again, not a whole lot of positive for Pettis, so perhaps he'll wait for a winner of one of the fights already set to give him an opponent. The rest of the list contains a lot of newcomers and I have no idea how they'll be matched up amongst themselves, but they surely will be. One fight that I'd like to see is Dennis Hallman vs Sean Sherk.

UNBOOKED LOSERS:

Melvin Guillard, Joe Lauzon, Sam Stout, George Sotiropoulos, Eiji Mitsuoka, Anton Kuivanen, Mitch Clarke, Yves Edwards, Terry Etim, T.J. O'Brien, Spencer Fisher, Rafaello Oliveira, Shane Roller.

Joining Pettis in the "nothing to gain, lots to lose" boat are Melvin Guillard and Joe Lauzon, who would be perfect opponents for each other if it wasn't for the fact that they just fought. I suspect we're going to see "G-Sot" and Guillard face off, as they are both sitting with two losses after long unbeaten streaks had them knocking on the title door. As for Lauzon, a match with Spencer Fisher, Yves Edwards or maybe Terry Etim seems to make the most sense. The rest of the crew on this list is miles away from any meaningful fights.

That wraps up the lightweights. With so many fights coming up, this division is finally going to start opening up and shifting around. Who will be at the top when the dust settles? Will it be a new blood like Ben Henderson, Nate Diaz or Edson Barboza? Or will the guys who've been at the top for the last few years, guys like Frank Edgar, Gray Maynard or Jim Miller regain the crown?

Comments and criticism are welcome!

Boy, how the mighty have fallen.

George Sotiropoulos was once considered one of the top title contenders in the lightweight division after starting his UFC career with seven consecutive victories.

After getting knocked off his pedestal by Dennis Siver at UFC 127 earlier this year, he was hoping to get back on track against tough Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos in the opening Spike TV preliminary card fight at UFC 132.

Instead, he was left unconscious in less than a minute.

Dos Anjos, known much more for his impressive jiu-jitsu skills than his striking, nailed Sotiropoulos with a massive hook, one of the nastiest and wildest looping strikes you'll ever see, and the 33-year-old Aussie went down -- hard.

There was no need for follow-up, as Sotiropoulos was completely done in from the single blow and the fight was stopped at the 59-second mark.

Dos Anjos is a fighter who was remembered more for getting knocked out by a Hail Mary uppercut by Jeremy Stephens in his UFC debut but his striking is definitely improving.

How surprising was that, Maniacs?

The Chicago Bulls Took A Look At Adam Morrison Over The Weekend

It's the week of the 2011 NBA Draft so we should probably be concentrating my efforts there. However, when news of Adam Morrison working out for the Chicago Bulls hits Ridiculous Upside headquarters, it has to be written about.

Morrison, the third overall pick by the Charlotte Bobcats five years ago who sat out all of last season, was one of 20 players the Bulls invited to a free agent workout over the weekend as they prepare for a Summer League-less Summer.

The Bulls have just nine guaranteed contracts going into next season, according to ShamSports, giving hope that Morrison and a couple of the prospects working out alongside him could earn their way onto the roster with a good training camp (whenever the looming lockout ends).

Along with Morrison, former fellow first round picks Javaris Crittenton, Sean Williams and Matt Janning -- who impressed everyone last summer on his way to opening the regular season with the Phoenix Suns -- highlighted the weekend workout in Chicago.

The guards at the workout included Janning, Crittenton, Jamar Smith, Donald Sloan and Stephen Dennis -- all of which played in the NBA Development League this past season. Janning and Dennis both worked out for the Bulls prior to this past season's NBA trade deadline.

Wing prospects brought in for a look include Morrison, Ronald Dupree, Micah Downs, Richard Roby, Shane Edwards, Chris Kramer and Dar Tucker. Dupree's name might ring a bell as he played 47 games with the Bulls during his rookie season in 2003-04.

The forwards that the Bulls brought in included DeShawn Sims, Leo Lyons and Lance Thomas. Sims needs to find a position to thrive at the next level, but after running away with the D-League's Rookie of the Year award this season, it's clear he deserves a chance to prove himself to an NBA team.

Last, but not least, the bigs in attendance were Williams, Patrick Sullivan, Chas McFarland and Matt Rogers. All four played in the D-League and only McFarland wasn't in a vet camp last year.

The Bulls aren't the first to bring in likely Summer League candidates -- the Timberwolves, Thunder, Knicks, Hornets, Pacers and Nuggets have all done the same over the past month with a number of the same candidates -- and likely won't be the last as teams prepare for a summer without Summer League.

In the first game of the third (of four, obviously) series to debut in the 2011 D-League Playoffs, the sixth seeded Bakersfield Jam <strike>upse</strike>t beat the third seeded defending D-League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 110-105.

In what was a relatively competitive game throughout, Bakersfield pulled out the victory through the capable hands of probable D-League MVP Trey Johnson. Mr. Trey J scored a game high 29 points, including a pair of huge jumpers that essentially put the game away.

Jeremy Wise was also huge for the Jam, scoring 15 of his 24 points from the line, including the clinching two with a little over 7 seconds left while Derrick Byars scored 14 points of his own, an impressive feat considering he recently broke his nose, and took more than one shot to it during play.

Derrick Caracter, Stephen Dennis and D'Andre Bell also scored in double figures for the underdog Jam, who will look to sweep the defending champions on Tuesday in Hidalgo.

Speaking of the defending champs, the Vipers were led by Jerel McNeal and Jon Scheyer, who scored 22 and 20 points respectively. Scheyer, in particular, was effective in all areas, finishing with 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.

Richard Roby had 17, Matt Janning had 12 and Mouhammad Faye had 11 to round out the double digit scorers for the Vipers.

The key matchup of this game was Hasheem Thabeet versus the big men of the Jam. Luke Zeller was ineffective (and wasn't matched up on Thabeet much anyway) while Drew Naymick had 9 strong rebounds.

Derrick Caracter, however, was the real catalyst in getting Thabeet into foul trouble, and the former No. 2 overall pick finished with 3 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a block in only a little over 22 minutes of play.

As I said before, Game 2 is at RGV this Tuesday, April 12th, at 8:00.

*Highlights will be up as soon as the D-League site feels like giving them to us*

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers, under the watchful eye of the Houston Rockets, chose to play the Bakersfield Jam in the first round of the NBA D-League Playoffs.

While I can understand not wanting to face the Texas Legends, the Jam play pretty similarly to the Vipers' up-tempo style and have the perimeter shooters to keep every game interesting so this one won't be easy.

In the last meeting between the Vipers in the Jam, Rio Grande Valley coasted to a 126-111 victory on March 5 after making 13-of-30 shot attempts from beyond the arc while turning the ball over just 14 times over the course of the game. Neither of those statistics should be all that surprising, however, considering the Vipers led the D-League in three-pointers made while turning the ball over less than than any of the 15 other teams in the Development League.

I'll get to the individual match-ups after the jump, but the match-up on the sidelines might be just as interesting. Chris Finch, coach of the Vipers as well as Great Britain's National Team, was at the helm of last year's championship squad in his first season in the D-League and is surely looking to repeat. Bakersfield coach Will Voigt, on the other hand, has yet to reach the postseason in the D-League after achieving success in both the ABA and PBL prior to his move to the D-League last season.

PG: Jerel McNeal vs. Stephen Dennis

Considering Jerel McNeal earned an NBA call-up to the New Orleans Hornets this season and Stephen Dennis is rookie out of some college called Kutztown, one would think match-up wouldn't be close. It is.

McNeal, a 6-foot-3 veteran out of Marquette, played his rookie season in Belgium last season until being kicked off the team for a drug violation. I couldn't find anything about a FIBA suspension so McNeal apparently came to the D-League on his own volition (and therefore no worries about an Orien Greene situation) and did quite well after having a subpar Summer League with the Charlotte Bobcats. In 47 games with the Vipers -- he missed three while with the Hornets when Chris Paul was out -- McNeal averaged 19.4 points and 4.4 assists after becoming the de facto point guard once Mustafa Shakur was called up to the Washington Wizards for the rest of the season.

Dennis, a 6-foot-6 rookie out of Kutztown that I actually wrote a bit about during the pre-draft workouts, was one of the most impressive players at this year's D-League Showcase. Since earning his role as Jam's starting point guard, Dennis has averaged an impressive 12.5 points and 5.7 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field. The talented 23-year-old was able to impress enough people to earn an invitation to tryout for the Chicago Bulls earlier in the year and, if he's able to impress in the playoffs, his name will surely come in more NBA circles next season.

Edge: As a point guard, I'm inclined to give Dennis the nod, but McNeal's going to have to be the better player in this series.

SG: Jon Scheyer vs. Trey Johnson

Two of the highest-profile players in the D-League are on a collision course. Who's excited?

Scheyer, a rookie out of Duke who's just recently returning to basketball after an eye injury during Summer League, has the talent to play in the NBA right now -- just not the consistency. In 16 games with the Vipers, Scheyer has four 20-plus point games compared to five games where he's scored in single digits. His game-to-game assist-turnover ratio is just as shaky, though that should be expected until he's able to develop a bit of chemistry with his RGV teammates.

Johnson, my pick for the D-League's MVP award, averaged 25.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field this season. The knock on him is that he's undersized, but his ability to score is pretty great and he does enough otherwise to make himself a worthy NBA gamble.

Edge: Since I just mentioned that I think Johnson's the D-League's Most Valuable Player, I think he's gotta get the edge here, right?

SF: Richard Roby vs. Derrick Byars

Something tells me these two could be the leading scorers for their respective teams during this series.

Roby, a 6-foot-6 wing out of Colorado, , has cooled down a bit after coming out of the gates with a hot hand to begin the D-League season. The half brother of Denver Nuggets power forward Kenyon Martin is actually a very good player on both ends of the court without many flaws in his game. Unfortunately he sometimes lets that go to his head, settling for heat-check shots even before he's hot, causing just as many 3-of-15 games as 14-of-22 performances.

Byars was actually a second round NBA Draft pick back in 2007, but the closest the 6-foot-7 wing has actually come to making the big leagues was as a member of the Chicago Bulls during last year's preseason. Byars began this season playing in Greece but has returned to form since joining the Jam in January with averages of 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Edge: Byars if he's healthy, Roby if he's hot.

PF: Mouhammad Faye vs. Derrick Caracter

If it looks like a mismatch, it probably will be.

Faye is actually a player I'd been following quite a bit during the Vegas Summer League as the former Georgia Tech transfer looked like he could be an NBA caliber player down the road while playing for the Dallas Mavericks' entry. A lanky 6-foot-10 face-up four man, the Senegal native has good range and can put the ball on the floor with the foot speed to defend most D-League forwards on the perimeter. On the season, Faye's averaging 10.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in 41 starts for the Vipers.

Caracter, a 6-foot-9 power forward on assignment from the Los Angeles Lakers, is actually a pretty good player. Unfortunately, he's suffered from a bit of ring rust (or its basketball equal) and is averaging just 8.7 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 43 percent from the field in his three games for the Jam so far this season.

Edge: Caracter. There's a reason one of them is on an NBA roster.

C: Hasheem Thabeet vs. Drew Naymick

This match-up should be a landslide victory for the former No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft. It isn't.

Thabeet is a player everyone knows about so I'll just let you know he's averaging 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks six games with the Vipers since being assigned by the Houston Rockets last month. I'll use the rest of this paragraph to thank him for getting me my first break when I broke the news that he was being assigned to the D-League. I owe you, big man, because otherwise I wouldn't be writing 1,200 words about a D-League playoff series at 2 a.m. in my underwear.

Naymick, a 6-foot-10 center who's best known as the red-headed kid from Michigan State a couple of seasons ago, has actually turned into a pretty respectable D-League player. Since moving into the starting lineup for the Jam in January, he's averaging 9.7 points and 8.5 rebounds while 2.3 shot attempts per game. He probably won't ever be an NBA player, but I like his hustle and that should count for something.

Edge: Thabeet. Even if he's far from a complete player and maybe not even as good as Naymick at this point, his presence in the paint is going to make the Jam players think twice before slashing to the bucket.

Bench: Matt Janning, Patrick Sullivan and Connor Atchley vs. Jeremy Wise, Brandon Wallace and Luke Zeller

The good thing is that all six of the above players would have been starters on a lot of D-League teams this season, but I think I'm going to give the Vipers the edge here.

Pick: Vipers in three after losing in Bakersfield.

Life isn't fair, really. There were 154 players that received some sort of contract during this preseason and just 44 of those players lasted until yesterday's roster cut deadline. There were 42 rookies in camp without guaranteed contracts, but only 11 were able to start their career in the NBA. There were 32 players that played in the D-League last season, but only five start the season with an NBA contract with a return to the D-League being the decision facing the other 27 who were thisclose to sticking this season.
