Tarence Kinsey has signed a two-year deal with Fenerbehce in Turkey, as reported by RealGM. My dreams have now all died. Not really, but seriously though, his name is Tarence Kinsey. I wish that was my pen name.

The Answer to No Answer? Grizzlies Backup Guard Situation

With Allen Iverson reporting that he is likely to sign somewhere (Miami or Charlotte seem most likely) in the near future, it's becoming obvious to the Grizzlies that they still a different guard to fill out the rotation and serve, most likely, as the team's scorer off the bench. Jason Williams, while not a scorer, may have been a good enough passer to get less experienced bench players like Sam Young and DeMarre Carroll a few good looks. But now Williams has signed with Orlando.

So who do the Grizzlies have left as options? The Memphis Commercial Appeal has the dirt:

The Griz have expressed interest in Ronald "Flip" Murray, Jamaal Tinsley and Tarence Kinsey, believing they could come to terms with one of those veteran players soon.

Shakedown on each of these players after the jump:

Ronald "Flip" Murray- Getting up there in age, Flip Murray is a 6'3" shooting guard who has a bit of a journeyman's resume. He was Division II Player of the Year in college, and started his career playing very little. In his third season, second in Seattle, Murray broke out averaging around 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game in about 24 minutes per game. Throughout his career he has filled similar roles, besides Cleveland where he started for one season, and has always been valuable for his aggressive scoring. His main flaw, however, is also his aggressive scoring. Murray has a reputation of dominating the ball and taking too many contested shots for his skill level. He has a career FG% around 42%. Still he has been useful in some situations, particularly when trying to fill Josh Childress's shoes in Atlanta last year
Jamaal Tinsley- What is there to be said about Tinsley that hasn't already been said about Zach Randolph? Extremely talented, often called a great guy, but always manages to end up on the wrong side of the law and be labeled a locker room cancer. Tinsley has the talented of a top-15 true point guard in the NBA, and always wracks up assists. Still his reputation is tarnished after being banned from Pacer's facilities last season. Like Jason Williams he would provide a spark not with his own scoring, but by facilitating for the youngsters. He might be too talented and too vocal to accept a role beneath Mike Conley, and also would probably like to sign with a playoff team to improve his image.
Tarence Kinsey- A former Grizzlies project, Kinsey played for the Cavaliers last season. In his rookie year Kinsey put up some gaudy numbers (almost 19 points per game, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) while starting in 12 games for the Grizzlies. Still Tarence went on to bounce from Europe to Cavaliers garbageman after his time with the Grizzlies ended. Tarence is 6'6" tall, which would add much needed size to our back court. He is considered a fantastic athlete and pure scorer, but is known to have very poor court awareness, especially on defense. Also Kinsey is still young at 25, and would likely continue to harness his athletic gifts and get more basketball sense.

By the way, full disclosure, I'm voting for Kinsey.

Vegas Summer League Recap: Day 7

We had two Summer League records fall yesterday. Anthony Morrow is now the SL single-game scoring record holder with, and Joey Dorsey the SL single-game rebounding record holder with 20. On the whole, though, a lot of guys played pretty terribly. I don't know if players are spending time seeing Vegas, if they're tired by day seven or whether it was just an off day. The first game was at 1 PM local time, which seems early for Las Vegas, but the rest of them were at the normal times so who knows. In honor of yesterday's "action" I'm going to leave this terrible intro and just go to the recaps.

Golden State Warriors 104, New Orleans Hornets 84

The story here for everyone is that Anthony Morrow set a new Summer League scoring record with 47 points. It actually came out of efficient shooting as well, as Morrowneeded only 26 shots to get that point total and shot 7-9 on threes. Morrow may have felt he needed to take a larger scoring role with Anthony Randolph and Cartier Marting getting DNPs (also Jared Jordan, who I had forgotten was on Golden State's roster). He also had seven rebounds, which I was somewhat surprised to see as I figured he wouldn't have done much other than shoot. Acie Law had a decent game running the point for the Warriors with nine points on 4-7 shooting and five assists in a little under 21 minutes. Neither Joe Ingles nor Connor Atchley shot the ball well (Ingles didn't make a single field goal), but they each had seven rebounds in 18 minutes for Ingles and 21 for Atchley. Almost no one played well for New Orleans. Well, that's not strictly true. Earl Calloway had 17 points on 7-10 shooting, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Other than Anthony Tolliver's six rebounds and 3-5 shooting from Larry Owens, though, the rest of the Hornets weren't very impressive. Guess what? That's a recurring theme, as you'll see after the jump.

San Antonio Spurs 85, Oklahoma City Thunder 76

DeJuan Blair focused on his scoring more than rebounding this game, and he did fairly well with 20 points on 11 shots (with five rebounds), though I would imagine that in the future he'll ask to stay in his rebounding lane a little more. Ian Mahinmi did a great job of getting to the free throw line and shot 7-8 there, allowing him to score 13 points on four shots. Malik Hairston finally showed his rebounding ability with six, and he shot 7-13 as well, but he also had four turnovers. George Hill is still a little rough around the edges, getting 20 points on 11 shots, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals but also six turnovers. DJ White had a decent game doing what DJ White does, with 17 points on 7-12 shooting and five rebounds in 18 and a half minutes, though he also had six fouls and three turnovers.

Houston Rockets 92, Los Angeles Lakers

In a world where we're pretending that these games matter, I really have no idea how the Rockets won. Sure, Joey Dorsey got the Summer League rebounding record, and he also shot 5-7 and had (a game-high) five assists, three steals and two blocks, but other than Aisander's favorite Rocket Chase Budinger the team shot really, really poorly. And while Budinger was solid scoring-wise, with 25 points on 7-9 shooting, including 3-3 shooting from behind the arc and 8-8 from the line, other than a pair of steals he really did nothing else. Will Conroy shot the ball well too, 3-4, but he missed four of his six free throws and had only one assist. Adam Morrison was the story of the first few games, but he's been tailing off the last few and he didn't even play yesterday (injury?). 14 points on 14 shots is generally considered inefficient, but I'll defend David Monds a little here in that he shot 50 percent and had six rebounds and no turnovers in 18 minutes. The problem was that he didn't get to the free throw line at all. Ben McCauley had 10 rebounds but was terrible from the field. Chinemelu Elonu had a decent game, 16 points on 10 shots and eight rebounds, but he also had eight fouls in 25 and a half minutes.

Cleveland Cavaliers 75, Dallas Mavericks 62

Another game where a lot of guys were terrible. Jawad Williams had one of the best performances, both of all the players in the game yesterday and for him personally throughout Summer League - he scored 18 points on 10 shots and had nine assists with only one turnover, though he shot only 6-11 from the free-throw line. Tarence Kinsey also played well, getting to the line a fair amount and shooting 16-18 there, ending up with 20 points on five shots, and he had four rebounds and three steals, but also six fouls and four turnovers. Darnell Jackson played okay, nine points on six shots and six rebounds, and Andre Brown shot 5-7 with four rebounds and three steals, though he also had seven fouls.

Toronto Raptors 84, Milwaukee Bucks 83

Jodie Meeks had a very strong game for Milwaukee, with 29 points on 23 shots (including 4-8 on three-pointers), as well as four rebounds. Joe Alexander also played fairly well, with 19 points on 14 shots and eight rebounds. Brandon Jennings' performance has steadily declined since the beginning of Summer League, and while he had seven assists yesterday it came with eight turnovers. It was the usual suspects doing it for the Raptors. DeMar DeRozan has gotten a lot of people talking this past week, and yesterday he had 20 points on 13 shots, six rebounds, three assists and only one turnover. Quincy Douby had 17 points on 13 shots, seven assists and four rebounds. That assist number is a little unusual for Douby, but perhaps it's a sign of his further development. Patrick O'Bryant has actually had a quietly decent Summer League, and yesterday he made all five of his field goals and finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block, though he shot only 1-4 from the free-throw line.

Memphis Grizzlies 86, Los Angeles Clippers 68

Someone on Twitter said that Blake Griffin has been dominating Summer League, and while I wouldn't go that far he's been fairly solid. 15 rebounds and five assists yesterday, though it came with five fouls, five turnovers, and needing 20 shots to get 18 points. Marcus Williams got to the free-throw line a lot, shooting 16-20 there, though he shot only 3-9 from the field. He also had five assists and four rebounds, which is fine, but didn't he have a lot more assists earlier on? Nik Caner-Medley had another decent shooting day, going 6-9 for 15 points, and he also had four rebounds. DeMarre Carroll shot 7-9, though the rest of his game wasn't overly impressive. Hamed Haddadi had three rebounds in a little over 10 minutes, which is solid, but he didn't do much else. Greg Stiemsma shot 3-4 for eight points and added three blocks in 11 minutes.

Vegas Summer League Recap: Day 3

The D-League Select team had a scrimmage yesterday against the Japanese national team, and you'd barely know it. The NBA's Summer League page doesn't mention it at all, while the D-League's website has a write-up but no boxscore. Jasper Johnson shot - and made - a three-pointer! I'm not really sure what distinguished that game from the rest of Summer League to make it only a "scrimmage" and not a game worth keeping track of (probably something to do with Jasper Johnson making a three-pointer), but I hope the NBA keeps the D-League team's boxscores in the future and doesn't shortchange these worthy players. And with that, on to the "real" games.

San Antonio Spurs 92, New Orleans Hornets 86

Malik Hairston shot the ball very efficiently, making seven of his 11 field goals, and both of his three-pointers, on the way to 16 points. He didn't do much else even though he's a pretty good rebounder. That's likely because DeJuan Blair did most of the rebounding for the Spurs. Blair made a statement in his first game, grabbing 10 boards in 22 minutes. Darren Collison had a solid day running the point for the Hornets, with 19 points on 13 shots, six assists and five rebounds, and Collison generally made good decisions with the ball. Julian Wright had a solid all-around game as well, with 15 points on 13 shots, seven rebounds, three blocks and two assists, and importantly for Wright, only two turnovers and one foul. George Hill did a great job of getting to the free-throw line, making all 11 of his shots there, and he had four rebounds and three assists, though also four turnovers.

Romel Beck showed off his efficient scoring, making half of his field goals and all of his free throws, and he added three rebounds. Anthony Tolliver had a pretty good game, with nine points on four shots and five rebounds, though he turned the ball over four times in 25 minutes. Brian Cusworth had four rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes, but also six fouls and three turnovers.

Houston Rockets 79, Minnesota Timberwolves 65

Joey Dorsey had another very good game, with eight points on two field goals (he shot 4-6 from the line), 16 rebounds and four blocks. He could stand to reduce his fouls and turnovers, but so far he might be having the best Vegas Summer League. James White also had a very efficient scoring day, with 14 points on nine shots. Not too many of the Timberwolves shot the ball very well, and several of them relied on the free-throw line to increase their shooting efficiency. Oleksiy Pecherov is pretty much made for Summer League at this point. He was quite possibly the best rebounder on the Wizards the last few years, though too much of his offensive game takes place behind the arc. In this one he grabbed five rebounds in a little under 19 minutes and made two of his three three-pointers, though he made only one of his five other field goals.

Rob Kurz didn't make much of an impression in the Orlando Summer League, but he had a decent game yesterday, making all three of his field goals (which included a pair of three-pointers). He had four fouls and four turnovers, though. Will Conroy had three assists and three rebounds in about 18 minutes, as well as a blocked shot. He also had only two fouls and one turnover, which is nice to see. Adam Parada took Steven Hill's place on Minnesota's roster, and while he missed all of his field goals, turned the ball over four times and had six fouls, he also had nine rebounds (five defensive, four offensive) in 10 and a half minutes. Parada's a seven-foot, 265-pound center who had a cup of coffee in the D-League and with the Sacramento Kings, and most recently he's been playing in the Philippines.

Milwaukee Bucks 80, Cleveland Cavaliers 69

Cleveland scored nine points in the third quarter. Ugh. The Cavs' first round pick Christian Eyenga played fairly well off the bench, with 10 points on six shots and three rebounds. Brandon Jennings shot the ball, uh, a lot, but he finished with 23 points on 18 shots and made half of his three-pointers and also had eight assists and five steals. Amir Johnson didn't shoot the ball particularly well and picked up eight fouls, though he had six rebounds and three steals. Tarence Kinsey's contract is unguaranteed until the end of the month, and he was one of those players I mentioned who shot the ball pretty poorly (3-10) but who did well from the line to make up for it (8-10). He also had six rebounds.

Jawad Williams made two of his three three-pointers and had six rebounds and a pair of steals, though he made only one of his six other field goals. Maureece Rice struggled to score again, but in this game he four assists in a little over 13 minutes, which is nice to see from him.

Memphis Grizzlies 86, Oklahoma City Thunder 57

The Thunder scored seven points in the fourth quarter. Ugh. It remains to be seen whether this is some kind of wake up call after Oklahoma City was one of the better teams in Orlando, or whether they're just tired. Russell Westbrook and Kyle Weaver were the only Thunder players to score in double figures, and Weaver made three of his five three-pointers. Marcus Williams (the Connecticut one) needed nine shots to score seven points, though he also had 17 assists and only one turnover, as well as four rebounds. Darrell Arthur had a decent all-around game, with 11 points on nine shots, eight rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal.

Trey Gilder played pretty well in about 14 minutes off the bench and three rebounds. Let's see...there weren't too many other D-League or undrafted players who a.) played, and b.) played well in this one. Both OKC and Memphis have a fair amount of NBA guys on their roster. Hamed Haddadi had five points on three shots, three rebounds and two steals in 16 minutes.

Summer slugfest. They're having UFC 100 here in Vegas this weekend, so it's perhaps fitting that the Bucks and Mavs slugged it out Friday night on the court. An ugly game, but ugly basketball is better than no basketball, right? Check out my recap, my liveblog, video highlights (above), and some Brandon Jennings audio.

Like Friday, I'll be sitting courtside and will be liveblogging the entire day's action in the comments as it happens. The Spurs and Hornets kick things off at 3 pm CT.
Joe and Luc. The Green/Mbah a Moute matchup could be an interesting one--both guys were versatile role players on Final Four teams (Green winning a title last year) and Green scored 16 on 7 shots in yesterday's loss to the Lakers. Meanwhile, Joe Alexander and Amir Johnson could have their hands full up front with the 6'9", 253 pound Darnell Jackson and the 7-foot, 280 pound David Harrison.

But as much as the Bucks might be featuring the two sophomore forwards together in Vegas, John Hammond says it's probably not be something we'll see a lot of in November.
"I think it's purely a summer league thing. I don't now that you would see us necessarily putting a team on the floor with those guys together getting extended minutes. But they both can play those positions. Luc might be a better offensive four man, just because he can do things at the four position that you need that player to do, but he's probably even better defensively at the three spot.
"Joe on the other hand is probably better offensively at the three spot, because he can get a shot for himself and he's going to get to the free throw line. Joe had kind of an ugly box score last night, but he missed three or four looks right near the basket. If he finishes a few of those and goes 8/18 then his line looks a lot different, and out of those 18 shots he took maybe three bad shots. But his ability to create shots for himself makes him an asset to us."

NBA Summer League Rosters Taking Shape

Alright, we got all of the personal mumbo-jumbo out of the way - let's begin with the Summer League coverage!

The Orlando of the NBA Summer League schedule (July 6-10) is here, the Vegas portion of the NBA Summer League schedule (July 10-19) is here and the NBA Summer League roster of your favorite team (so far) is... After the jump!

I was all drafted out, so sorry for the lack of posting going on this weekend - I sincerely apologize to all thirteen of you that were disappointed. As a show of goodwill, I worked feverishly throughout the weekend to scour my sources, google the news, and do anything and everything I could to start piecing together an accurate view of what your team will look like this Summer.

Granted, it's probably not likely to expect much out of some of these players, but each year there are players that pop up from nowhere in Summer League and impress enough to earn a spot on an NBA roster. The most recent example would be Bobby Brown from last season, though there are plenty more (and we'll look at them throughout the next week heading into the Orlando portion of NBA Summer League's).

Just 5 hours before February's trading deadline, when rumors of the Cleveland Cavaliers' acquiring Shaquille O'Neal from the Phoenix Suns first surfaced, I wanted the trade to go through. I figured the Orlando Magic's season ended a little more than two weeks earlier, when Jameer Nelson suffered a severe shoulder injury against the Dallas Mavericks. And the night before the deadline, the New Orleans Hornets drilled Orlando by 32 points on national TV. While I wouldn't necessary root for the Cavs, the prospect of the gregarious O'Neal joining LeBron James in Cleveland made for great theater. Those talks fell through; the Magic made a surprise, 11th-hour deal for Rafer Alston; and went on to defeat Cleveland in a 6-game Eastern Conference Finals series to advance to the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now, on the eve of the NBA Draft, O'Neal is indeed headed to Cleveland in exchange for Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, this year's 46th overall draft selection, and $500,000 cash. The trade gives the Cavs the dominant post presence they lacked in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Magic and Dwight Howard, who exposed their lack of front-line bulk. Howard averaged a personal playoff-best 25.8 points per game in that series, to go with 13 rebounds. He also shot 65.1% from the field and had no trouble scoring over whomever the Cavs threw at him, be it Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Wallace, Anderson Varejao, or Joe Smith. And the Cavs' season ended in a game Howard dominated to the tune of 40 points (14-of-21 shooting) and 14 rebounds.

Somehow, I'm still okay with Shaq joining Cleveland, although I'll quickly tire of the ensuing media circus, which will no doubt touch on his open feud with Magic coach Stan Van Gundy and his constant belittling of Howard, of whom he is (probably) jealous.

With Shaq anchoring the middle, the Cavs have undoubtedly improved from a talent standpoint. Should O'Neal falter in Cleveland, his production will nonetheless trump whatever Wallace or Pavlovic would have provided. Bearing that in mind, is Shaq enough of a difference-maker to vault Cleveland past Orlando in the East? After the jump, a look at what this move means for the Magic's chances of holding off the Cavaliers again next season.

First off, Shaq greatly helps Cleveland's defense in at least one regard: he can defend Howard one-on-one, which in turn enables the rest of the Cavaliers to stay at home on Orlando's three-point shooters. The Magic torched the Cavs for 62 three-pointers in 152 attempts (40.8%) in the Eastern Conference Finals, with many of those looks being wide-open as a result of Cleveland paying too much attention to Howard down low. WIth O'Neal in the fold, Orlando figures to get fewer such opportunities against an otherwise stingy Cleveland defense.

And I don't just say that Shaq can defend Dwight because he's a flippin' giant; in the past, he's been fairly apt at stopping the Magic's franchise center, this monumental flop notwithstanding. Here's a look at their statistics in head-to-head meetings. Note that Howard only averages 7.7 field goal attempts per game against O'Neal, which is far less than his 10.7 career average, which suggests O'Neal does a good job discouraging entry passes to Howard.

Where Shaq's acquisition doesn't help Cleveland is in the pick-and-roll area. In 17 professional seasons, Shaq has yet to master how to defend that play. And at 37, he's ill-equipped to keep up with Howard on the move. If nothing else, the Shaq trade means the Magic must now use more pick-and-roll schemes against Cleveland than they used to. Ilgauskas and Smith, too, struggled to keep up with Howard on the pick-and-roll. Varejao is younger and much more athletic, but lacks the strength to sufficiently bother Howard. Shaq falls squarely in line with Ilgauskas and Smith in this regard, and as such doesn't do much to help Cleveland.

Offensively, Shaq gives the Cavs a low-post scoring option. He's performed well on the low block even against the Defensive Player of the Year. Take another look at that last link showing their head-to-head meetings. Save for a poor 3-for-8 effort against Dwight three years ago, O'Neal has shot no worse than 53.3% against Howard in any other career meeting, and 62.1% overall. Previously, the Cavs had no inside presence of which to speak, relying on long-range shooting from Delonte West and Mo Williams; mid-range shots from Ilgauskas and Smith; and whatever creative finishes James could muster in the lane. Now? They can post-up the Magic's defense, throwing another look at it. But they also lose something, namely the pick-and-pop with Ilgauskas. And it remains to be seen how O'Neal's presence in the lane affects--if at all--James' many forays to the rim. For all we know, he'll just clog everything up. Cavs coach Mike Brown is not known for his offensive creativity. I don't trust him to immediately solve the Cavs' offensive woes, if O'Neal presents them with any.

Think of it this way: Orlando is no slouch on defense, finishing tops in the league in defensive efficiency last season. There's no reason to believe the Magic can't handle Shaq in the low post, even if he has LeBron to draw attention from him.

Another reason for cautious optimism in Orlando is that this trade did nothing to improve the Cavs' depth at the wing positions. James doesn't need much rest, which is the good news for Cleveland. The bad? Cleveland was so thin at the wings that it had to play West 45 minutes per game against Orlando in the Conference Finals. West is a fine player, and perhaps an underrated one, but he should not have to be forced into 45 minutes a night for an NBA championship contender. With Wally Szczerbiak off the books and Pavlovic shipped to the Valley of the Sun, the only swingman joining West on the Cavs' roster next season is Tarence Kinsey, and his deal is non-guaranteed, so says this report on his recent DUI arrest. Cleveland will need to keep busy in tonight's draft--it owns the 30th overall selection--and in free agency in order to round out its collection of shooting guards and small forwards.

Ultimately, the trade improves the Cavaliers, but not enough to assert with any degree of certainty that they are set to leapfrog Orlando. Even at his age, Shaq's a great player--Hell, he led the league in field-goal percentage last year--but he hardly solves all Cleveland's problems. It'll still be vulnerable on the pick-and-roll, and it still needs to stock-up on wing talent. Orlando is still the team to beat out East until the Cavs improve in those two areas.
