The Nets announced Thursday morning that they have waived Stephen Graham, reducing their roster to 14 players. (DeShawn Stevenson would make it 15 again.) The Nets needed to waive Graham Thursday, so that he could clear waivers before his $1.1 million contract became guaranteed.
Getting laid off on Christmas Eve sounds much like Dickens "A Christmas Carol". Only this year, Billy King could be Scrooge and Stephen Graham Bob Cratchit. The Nets must decide by Saturday whether to dump Graham and save themselves $1.1 million, money that could be used for cap space...at the least.
The pace is quickening now. Players will start arriving in significant numbers Monday. Deron Williams will be talking Nets in the WFAN Studio. The full schedule will be announced Tuesday night. The CBA is expected to be ratified Wednesday. Expect a rush of rumors Thursday and the opening of training camp (and first free agent signings) on Friday.
Although he still spends his off-seasons in Florida, Stephen Graham traveled to Fort Worth this week to help out a friend from Oklahoma State. Charles Hickman, coach at Fort Worth Polytechnic, was having a hard time getting kids to sign up for a community basketball camp and recruited Graham. The presence of an NBA player changed everything.
It's tryout time for the Nets. With the Pre-Draft Combine complete, the Nets' front office move on to Minneapolis for the second group workout this weekend, then head back to New Jersey where individual tryouts will begin around Memorial Day Weekend. Then, there is the Adidas Treviso EuroCamp in Italy on June 4-7
Looking at the next few weeks, It's all about the Draft. Billy King said Wednesday he doesn't expect to make any trades prior to the Draft because the CBA ends a week later. No sense to making a major deal when you don't know how the collective bargaining agreement is going to affect you.
As the days dwindle down to the precious few (only two weeks till the first NetsDaily Off-Season Report!), this could be an exhilarating or dreadful off-season. With the Nets desperately trying to surround Deron Williams with top-flight talent and a lockout looming, this could be the Nets' most important off-season...until next off-season.
