In the wake of that workout video from Natomas the Kings dropped online last night, two major questions sprung up:

What is Bobby Jackson doing there?
Who is that tall lanky dude with dreadlocks?

Jackson is there to keep in shape while waiting for a contract offer from one of the contenders out there. He happens to be a better option to run the point during a scrimmage than, say, Randy Brown. (If that joke escapes you, former assistant coach Brown had epic shooting contests with Kings players during his tenure here. There's something to be said about not having coaches who wish they were still players.)

The mysterious dreadlocked man is one Jermareo Davidson, former Bobcat and Warrior. Davidson was the 37th pick in 2007; the Warriors immediately traded him with Jason Richardson to Charlotte in exchange for Brandan Wright. Last season, Davidson got a cup of coffee with Golden State. He was actually on the roster a good deal of the season, though, which means he has a limited D-League ledger. What's there is good: 16/11 in 34 minutes with Idaho last year. (It's worth noting that current Kings assistant Bryan Gates coaches Davidson at Idaho.)

Davidson will be a participant in the Kings' camp beginning next week. He's in the same boat as Desmond Mason: no guaranteed roster spot, no guaranteed salary. (On that note, considering that Davidson is young, a D-League product and a center, I should offer a hearty applause to the Kings front office. This is what we need.) Sacramento may not even carry 14 players, so it's possible none of the nonguaranteed players could get a spot. But if Mason or Davidson (or any of the others who will come to town -- think Nik Caner-Medley in years past) win hearts, we'll have a 14-player roster.

I feel like I already know what Anthony Morrow can do- shoot the lights out, rebound the rock, and hustle on D. I'm not that interested in seeing Anthony Randolph (likely) dominate this level of competition, but it will be interesting to see his rebuilt body (just like Morrow's). As you all probably know Anthony's Been Doin' Work this summer [see Randolph bigger, vows to be better by MT].

However, my vote for most intriguing watch on the Dubs summer league team goes to Masala Curry and Law & Order IV. I really don't have a feel for what Stephen Curry and Acie Law IV can do even at this level of mostly players fighting to be NBA 12th man.

For the first time in a long time I'm actually pretty excited about the Warriors Summer League team. I hate to temper everyone's excitement, but I feel obligated to caution you- the summer league is absolutely meaningless (ahem, see fool's gold). It's like the 10th- 12th men and practice squad players dueling it out.

Now that doesn't mean it isn't fun, but it does mean that it's a fairly useless barometer of how players will actually do in the NBA regular season. There's exceptions like AMMO and Kaz of course, but for the most part this is just meaningless fun (in all fairness I guess "meaningless fun" also applies to the Warriors regular season). Having said that let's hope the Dubs summer league team dominates and is simply "Unstoppable Baby!"

NBA Finals Championships are for the Lakers, but Summer League crowns? That's reserved for us over here- thank you very much.

We should have several live GSoM correspondents to get you all the 411 and more from the City of Sin. Ridiculous Scott from the super rididiculous Ridiculous Upside in particular will be giving ridiculous airtime to the Summer League festivities. Will anyone else be making the trip out to LV this year? Scouting reports, interviews, etc. are always appreciated for your golden friends here in the Bay Area who missed the bus to Vegas.

Summer: school is out, the fog is in, and the Warriors have a shot at winning it all. "It," of course, being the annual Las Vegas Summer League. This year the team will be rolling out two starters from last year’s regular season squad and two new backcourt acquisitions. No, Marco Belinelli will not be dazzling the crowd for a third straight year. With Anthony Randolph on the roster, however, I doubt the Vegas fans need to worry about a lack of excitement.

2009 NBA Free Agency: Warriors Expected to Use Midlevel Exception- Ramon Sessions, Jarrett Jack, Jason Kidd, and Allen Iverson

Now that all of the 2009 NBA Draft madness is over it's time to turn our focus towards 2009 NBA Free Agency.

In Chad Ford's list of Top 25 free agents for this summer over at ESPN.com he notes that only a handful of teams such as the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, and Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to use their midlevel exception this offseason. In the list he notes that the Warriors are interested in two restricted free agents in particular: 1) Ramon Sessions and 2) Jarrett Jack.

Ramon Sessions, Bucks (RFA)
Teams Interested: Bucks, Mavericks, Warriors, Rockets, Heat, Blazers
Salary Range: $3-5 million per year
Teams are always in pursuit of point guards, especially ones that aren't going to break the bank, and Sessions has caught the eye of a number of teams. With the Bucks struggling financially, they may not be able to match.

Sessions is indeed intriguing. Some have even called him The Greatest Basketball Player On Earth [Tirico Suave] which is pretty impressive for a guy who the Warriors passed up 4 times in the 2007 NBA Draft for Brandan Wright, Marco Belinelli, Jermareo Davidson, and Stephane Lasme (see Golden State Warriors 1st Round Draft History and Just My Imagination). In all seriousness, Sessions is an upgrade over both Acie Law and C.J. Watson. Maybe if he comes here San Ramon can give him the city key too. If $3-5 million is the asking price, the Warriors should be buying.

Jarrett Jack, Pacers (RFA)
Teams Interested: Pacers, Hawks, Raptors, Sixers, Warriors
Salary Range: $3-5 million per year
Jack beat out T.J. Ford for the Pacers' starting point guard position at the end of the season. He might get offers in the range of the midlevel exception, and it's not clear whether or not the Pacers can afford to re-sign him. One team to watch is the Hawks, who could bring him back to Atlanta, where he played college ball at Georgia Tech.

Jack is about 3 years older than Sessions and provides a very steady hand in the backcourt. There's nothing spectacular about this signing, nor is their much upside. It would still be a solid one nonetheless. The fun money would go to Sessions, but Jack is no slouch either. This is a guy who finished off the 2008-2009 season in a tear. 17.3 ppg. 4.9 apg, and 1.4 stls (post All-Star break) capability is more than adequate for a backup guard.

Another name to toss out is Jason Kidd as my esteemed colleague R Dizzle has already done: Bring Back Jason Kidd to the Bay! ...Why not?

Jason Kidd, Mavericks
Teams Interested: Mavericks, Blazers, Lakers, Rockets, Knicks
Salary Range: $5.5-7 million per year

Kidd continues to claim that the reports of his demise are exaggerated, and his solid play last season backed him up. Still, he's a 36-year-old point guard.

The Mavs are one of several teams willing to pay for a point guard with court vision. It remains to be seen where he wants to be and whether he'll command more than a midlevel deal.

Don't let anyone tell you Kidd is old, washed up, and not good anymore. Take a look at the facts:

he’s morphed into a very nice 3pt shooter- 40.6% 3pt last season
he’s still an elite passer with nearly 9 dimes a game to only 2 turnovers
6.2 rpg last season
2 steals last season
played in 321 out of 328 possible games the last 4 seasons

Unlike the Warriors other 2 primary ball handlers Monta and Jack, no one is ever going to accuse JKidd of being a black hole or regularly making dumb decisions with the rock.

He’s a perfect PG guard alongside Monta. Kidd is still a phenomenal distributor and he’s big enough and still able to guard the non-elite 2 guards in this league. Think Monta will love running out on the 1 man fast break will Kidd rebounding the rock and dishing a laser pass to him? Think Corey Maggette will love finishing the fast break or long lobs from Kidd? Think everyone will be complaining a lot loss about Jack's turnovers?

I think so.

At this point in his career Kidd's looking for a championship as he should, so I highly doubt he'd even be the least bit interested in coming back to the Bay to play for Cohan and Rowell's disaster. However, as Eric B and Rakim will tell you- this ain't no joke:

A final name I'll toss out is the one and only Allen Iverson. It really doesn't appear teams are that interested in him right now. His stock is at its lowest point... ever.

Salary Range: $3-5 million per year
Iverson's late-season disappearance didn't help his reputation. He's still a good player, but two nagging questions will hurt his case for a big deal: One, with the exception of that magical season in Philly under Larry Brown, is Iverson a winner? Two, does he have much left? The answer to Question 1 seems to be no. The answer to Question 2 seems to be a qualified yes. But I can't find a team that is willing to stick its neck out for him. I think retirement for Iverson isn't out of the question.

If the Warriors can add AI for $3-5 million that would be quite the steal. Last year was a frustrating and injury-riddled one for the Answer, but before that he was actually putting up some of the best numbers of his career. He's one season removed from putting up 26.4 ppg (45.8% FG- 2nd highest of his 13 year career, 34.6% 3pt- career high, 80.9% FT), 7.2 apg : 3.0 to, and 2.0 thefts. in another high octane offense over in Enver. For comparison's sake Monta Ellis' career high ppg is 20.2 and last season he distributed 3.7 apg with 2.7 turnovers (unacceptable distribution totals for a starting point guard in the NBA) and 1.6 steals. A healthy Iverson is a better player than a healthy Ellis in 2009-2010. The big question of course is- will either of these 2 guards be healthy?

Also don't believe the hype that swapping AI with Chauncey Billups miraculously improved the Denver Nuggets and vaulted them to the Western Conference Finals. Billups is wildy overrated and Nuggets just got very lucky in the 1st two rounds of the playoffs. If they faced the Lake-show in the 1st round of this past year's spring dance it'd be the same broken record- bounced in the 1st round faster than you can say "Muppet". Flip back to Polling GSoM: Based on their stats Guard A or Guard B? and if you think I'm a lunatic for holding these stances, I'm sure there's plenty of smart folks over at Pickaxe and Roll who will agree with you.

I might be the biggest AI fan in the Bay Area and I'm all for bringing Iverson here. Will he guarantee that the Warriors crack the Elite 8 and our playing well beyond the first week of April? Of course not. But who cares? If this team is going to continue to suck (missing the playoffs in 14 of the past 15 seasons) then let's at least have a wildly entertaining team. There's very few players in this league who can entertain more than AI. Plus, who can resist this smallball lineup?

NBA Summer League Rosters Taking Shape

Alright, we got all of the personal mumbo-jumbo out of the way - let's begin with the Summer League coverage!

The Orlando of the NBA Summer League schedule (July 6-10) is here, the Vegas portion of the NBA Summer League schedule (July 10-19) is here and the NBA Summer League roster of your favorite team (so far) is... After the jump!

I was all drafted out, so sorry for the lack of posting going on this weekend - I sincerely apologize to all thirteen of you that were disappointed. As a show of goodwill, I worked feverishly throughout the weekend to scour my sources, google the news, and do anything and everything I could to start piecing together an accurate view of what your team will look like this Summer.

Granted, it's probably not likely to expect much out of some of these players, but each year there are players that pop up from nowhere in Summer League and impress enough to earn a spot on an NBA roster. The most recent example would be Bobby Brown from last season, though there are plenty more (and we'll look at them throughout the next week heading into the Orlando portion of NBA Summer League's).

D-League Draft In Review, 2008 Edition

Yesterday, Jon L had a great comment when I posted the first pick of my re-draft:

That's actually a tricky variable to the draft that speaks to the sort of limbo many D-League teams find themselves in - it's true they already have seven players before the draft, but should they roll the dice and grab an NBA guy who isn't likely to be on the team for very long, or go with a still-talented-but-safer pick and ensure the team will have solid players for the entire season?

Personally, I think it's better to pick the most talented player that fills a role that needs filling, regardless of call-up probabilities. For one, if a team can get off to a hot start before 10-day's start in mid-January, nearly a third of the season is already in the books.

After that, if the player gets signed for the season in the NBA, the team will move to the top of the waiver priority list, giving them a pretty good opportunity to pick up a player that can fill the role rather capably (example: If Idaho would have waited three days at the top of the order, Pops Mensah-Bonsu would have been a pretty good replacement player.)

Anyway, his comment got me to thinking quite a bit, leading to me doing the entire re-draft last night. Continue on for the results of that along with my steals and duds of each round. Scandalous!

First, here is the format: Picks are in order of selection. Original pick in parentheses. Next line - guys that seemed they could contribute to the team that were either allocated or returning. Last, my reasoning for new pick.

Tulsa 66ers - Jermareo Davidson (Chris Richard)

Russell Carter SG, Keith Closs C, Chris Ellis PF, Jeremy Kelly SG, Terrell Everett PG, Ryan Humphrey PF, Keith Clark PF

Tulsa needed a big, and Davidson was the best big in the draft. It doesn't seem like Closs ever planned to play in the league, leaving them with three 6'8" bigs. I felt with Jermareo, that'd be a dangerous front line. I think there were enough wings that that could have probably waited until the 2nd round, whereas a center was much more rare.

Colorado 14ers - Othyus Jeffers (James Mays)

Josh Davis PF, Joe Dabbert C

Colorado knew Gill was on his way so biggest need was a swingman. Jeffers brings defense and is a gritty "Coloradoish" player. Plus, and possibly more importantly, it would have combined my man crushes.

Idaho Stampede - James Mays (Jermareo Davidson)

Jamaal Tatum PG, Coby Karl SG, Brent Petway F

Lance Allred came right after draft, so Idaho needed a 3/4. James Mays, before his injury, was probably the best player in the league.

Sioux Falls Skyforce - Chris Richard (Gary Forbes)

Frank Williams PG, Carl Elliott SG, Bobby Jones SF, Michael Joiner PF, Chris Alexander C

With that returning lineup, Sioux Falls was only really lacking at the power forward spot. With Richard just getting cut from Twolves and the Skyforce being a Minnesota affiliate, this was just a logic pick.

Bakersfield Jam - David Noel (Derrick Byars)

Mateen Cleaves PG, Trey Johnson SG, Nick Lewis C

This one will be quick - they needed a 3 or a 4, and Noel was Best available.

Fort Wayne Mad Ants - Derrick Byars (Coleman Collins)

Walker Russell PG, Ron Howard 2/3, Chris Hunter 4/5

Fort Wayne really need a big to compliment Hunter, and Collins was probably most talented left, but I think that Byars really would have given them a much more dangerous team.

Erie Bayhawks - Erik Daniels (Erik Daniels)

Maureece Rice PG, Jackie Manuel 2/3, Ivan Harris 3/4

Needed a big, but there aren't any left that I like. As much as I wasn't a fan of Daniels, he showed to be solid in their lineup as a "center."

Anaheim Arsenal - James White (James White)

Cedric Bozeman PG, TJ Cummings 4, Noel Felix 4/5

For reasons unknown, this team blew up in a hurry. Had those four, Kedrick Brown and Marcus Campbell played together (Brown and Campbell returned early in the season), Anaheim would have been scary. Unfortunately, they were scary, but for the wrong reasons.

Utah Flash - Smush Parker (Denham Brown in trade for Dontell Jefferson)

Brian Jackson 4/5

They had NBA help coming at all other positions - Parker might not have fit in all that well, but this would have been a fun team to watch!

Reno Bighorns - Gary Forbes (Antonio Meeking)

Damone Brown 3/4, Jesse Smith 5

Forbes is a stud. Antonio Meeking isn't. Russell Robinson would have been a nice pick here, but Reno was able to get him in the second round anyway, so we're keeping him there.

Dakota Wizards - Coleman Collins (Marcus Hubbard)

Mo Baker PG, David Bell PG, Dontell Jefferson G, Blake Ahearn G, Renaldo Major SF, Quemont Greer 3/4, Will Frisby PF

Only need was height. Looking at injury troubles, Taj MacCullough would have been a good pick as well seeing as he was with the NBA's Wizards in the preseason, but I think personalities would have clashed.

Rio Grande Valley Vipers - Cartier Martin (Smush Parker)

Trent Strickland 2/3, Stanley Asumnu SF, Alton Ford PF, Kendall Dartez 4/5

RGV needed a point guard, but Tierre Brown was terrible and Russell Robinson is a much better distributor than scorer. Unfortunately, they didn't have anyone great that could score. Cartier Martin would have shored that up.

Los Angeles Defenders - Taj MacCullough (Jasper Johnson)

Brandon Heath G, Joe Crawford SG, Ryan Forehan-Kelly SF, Patrick Sanders PF, Rashid Byrd C

Could have used a point guard, but I like Taj. Hell, I like a lot of people more than Jasper Johnson. I would have put assistant coach Chucky Brown back on the court if that was an option over Jasper.

Albuquerque Thunderbirds - Antonio Meeking (David Noel)

Will Conroy PG, Majic Dorsey PG, Cheyne Gadson G, Corey Underwood 4/5

They had a really good pick originally in Noel (but then randomly traded him?) I think Meeking would have done well here with Noel off the board. He played well in this system after being traded for Noel, anyway.

Iowa got a steal in Martin - Brown wouldn't have been much of a drop off.

Looby was very unpolished, but could always block and board. I considered a point guard here, but I think that Williams played well as a point-forward and Looby was probably the best available player that seems like he wouldn't screw up the chemistry.

D-League Re-Draft: Tulsa, You're on the Clock.

Last season, I did a re-draft of the D-League draft. Granted this was before many of you learned of the wonderfulness Ridiculous Upside has to offer, but I liked the idea. Thus, we're doing it again this year, starting with Tulsa , who drew the first pick in the D-League draft this season.

The D-League is a little different - before the draft, you already have seven players on your roster - either returning players, allocated players (regional significance?), and local tryout players (longshots).

In Tulsa, they were already starting with fairly solid team: Tulsa started with two NBA vets - Keith Closs in the middle and Ryan Humphrey at the 4-spot. They also brought in widebody Chris Ellis to man the post, former Oklahoma point Terrell Everett, two veteran wings in Jeremy Kelly and Russell Carter, along with Keith Clark, the eventual runner up in the D-League Dunk Contest. Overall, not many (gaping) holes.

Since Keith Closs had decided against the D-League, apparently finding that the Phillipine National Team needed his services just a bit more, I've decided that Tulsa could most use a big man. They thought that too, picking Chris Richard originally in this spot. Unfortunately, Richard was disappointing, duplicatin, streaky, and vastly undersized for the center position - even in the D-League - before being shut down with a back injury in mid-January.

With Ryan Humphrey, Chris Ellis and Keith Clark all manning the undersized post role already, this team could have been truly dominant, D-League-wise, with a tall, lanky, athletic scorer to compliment the big bodied post players. It could have beautiful - and Tulsa could have finished much better than 15-35 record they mustered, ultimately leading to the dismissal of coach Paul Woolpert.

My choice: Jermareo Davidson. Davidson had NBA experience, being a second round pick of the Charlotte Bobcats the season before. Davidson had something Tulsa was lacking - height and athleticism. Jermareo (love that name) ended up being a pretty good D-League player for the Idaho Stampede before being called up by the Golden State of Mind Warriors, averaging 16.1 points, 10.8 boards, and 1.5 blocks in less than three quarters of action.

Now on the clock: the eventual D-League champion Colorado 14ers.

Yes another loss - a fitting end to this season. Plagued of injuries, front office turmoil, and whiny players (ahem...Al Harrington) this season has not been the brightest. For about 20 games, I have witnessed losses and talked about the "great potential" this team. Players like Anthony Morrow and Anthony Randolph have shown that we have a great future, but the present is terrible. We lost to the Suns again - another close game with a lot great moments - Anthony Morrow tearing it up again, CJ distributing well, Randolph being all over the court - but it wasn't enough. It was never enough this season.

Ya know what? Who cares! Cause the Golden State Warriors are taking all their players, coaches, and us, the GSoM crew to Disneyland!

THAT'S RIGHT DISNEYLAND!!!

Not only am I stoked to go hang with everyone, but as I always found on my trips, Disneyland is quite an adventure....

Courtney Sims is a (UPDATE: Very) hot commodity; Knicks calling soon?

According to The Knicks Blog, the New York Knicks have been heavily scouting "shot-blocker" Courtney Sims, who has already played out two 10-days with the Phoenix Suns. If they're looking for a shot blocker though, they should stick with Cheikh Samb. If they want a solid big man with good length, limited but effective post moves, a fadeaway jumper, and great D-League numbers, they should go with Sims. Definitely, go with Sims.

I shot Nick Nurse, Sims' D-League coach, an email this afternoon to see what he thought of Sims. Nurse responded quickly with lots of good things to say:

"Courtney is a very talented scorer and is 6-11... he has tremendous touch and skill with his shooting and moves around the post... continues to develop new ways to score... has a good right hand jump hook, but his turn around is coming and his face up shooting, even out to three, will be very good eventually... if he continues to improve in the next 12 months as much as he did in the last 12, he should be playing in the NBA... has work to do with his running and strength, both of which are better than they look (and better than average), but he needs to get better in these areas."

That said, if Sims plays Tuesday night with the Energy in Bakersfield, I'd be surprised.

This would have been the perfect time to take a look at Patrick Ewing Jr., it'd seem, but after he recently sprained his MCL, that won't be able to happen for probably another two weeks at the earliest.

With Jermareo Davidson now out for the season in Golden State with a stress fracture that requred surgery, I would assume that Golden State could use Sims as well. Both are long and athletic post players who can run the floor, rebound and block shots. Both have a decent touch around the basket and can step out and hit the jumper if needed, although Sims jumper looks much uglier.

I would have actually preferred Sims to be called-up over Davidson earlier this season, and now, Golden State, you have the opportunity to right this wrong. Keep with your love of the D-League. Look how wonderfully Kelenna Azubuike and CJ Watson have worked out, both who dominated the D-League when you called them up!

Since it seems as though the Knicks are thisclose to signing Sims, I'd look for Golden State to take a look at Dwayne Jones or Chris Hunter.

Rod Benson, however would be my pick. Since moving to Reno, the Boom Tho Movement, which originated in Golden State is in full effect. Benson is averaging 15.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in under 32 minutes of action.

You might have heard this before, but Leon Powe played really well on Friday night in the Celtics' win of the season to date. This makes me happy. Let's get to this week's Boxed Out.

Still a favorite in this space.

We mentioned it earlier in the week, but again, this is a legitimate run at a quintuple-double. Too bad LeBron James and Mo Williams combined for 72 points, including 29 in the fourth quarter.

Dirk Nowitzki, Monday at Oklahoma City: 20 points

Which equaled the total of the other four Dallas starters.

Nenad Krstic, Monday versus Dallas: 10-for-16 from the field, 26 points, 6 rebounds

Six more points than the four Dallas starters not named Dirk Nowitzki. Also of note in this game, Russell Westbrook went for a triple-double.

Roger Mason, Monday at LA Clippers: 1-for-9 from the field, 0-for-6 on threes, 2 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, plus-20

Odd day all around for Rog. His team won by 28. That part wasn't quite as odd.

Chauncey Billups, Tuesday at Detroit: 11-for-19 from the field, 4-for-8 on threes, 8-for-8 foul shooting, 34 points, 4 assists

In his return to the Motor City, he hit as many field goals as the Pistons' starting backcourt did and scored just four less points than Rip Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey combined. He also outscored his team's other four starters (34-33), and his current team did not outscore his former team.

Kevin Love, Tuesday versus Golden State: 7-for-14 from the field, 18 points, 14 rebounds

Apparently still mad at the league for not including him in HORSE and taking it out on everybody.

Carl Landry, Tuesday versus Toronto: 7-for-9 from the field, 8-for-8 foul shooting, 22 points, 6 rebounds, plus-30

Rashad McCants, Tuesday versus Indiana: 6-for-6 from the field, 3-for-3 on threes, 5-for-6 foul shooting, 20 points

The rest of his team was not quite so efficient from the field and fell to the Pacers at home.

A triple-double that didn't include points would be really cool.

Michael Beasley and Daequan Cook, Wednesday versus Phoenix: 19-for-30 from the field, 7-for-9 on threes, 10-for-11 foul shooting, 55 points, 14 rebounds, 1 turnover

The Suns' bench totaled 24 points.

Joakim Noah, Wednesday versus Golden State: 3-for-11 from the field, 8-for-8 foul shooting, 14 points, 17 rebounds, 4 blocks

Given his form, it's the perfection from the line that amazes me.

Rudy Gay, Wednesday at LA Clippers: 12-for-22 from the field, 9-for-9 foul shooting, 35 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists

And the Grizz win by 23 on the road. Makes it all the more disheartening that the Celts found a way to lose to the Clips.

That's a triumphant return from suspension for the Mike Gorman favorite.

The Jazz are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. The Warriors are one of the coldest teams in the NBA.

Sure we beat them 3 weeks ago at home. They didn't have Boozer or AK-47.

The probability of the Warriors beating the Jazz last night was approximately 2%.

Sure, he's defense was lacking early in the game and he was the reason Okur went off in the first, but he adjusted, and played with his head for the rest of the game.
