I really want to be into the D-League. SBNation already has an incredible site for anything you would ever want to know about it. There is a lot to like. The teams play an entertaining style of game with real passion every game. Plus, I have grown fond of following the Jeremy Richardson and Othello Hunter's of the basketball world. It seems like a good fit. All I need is for the Hawks to take some kind of interest in it. Any kind of interest.

We sent Othello Hunter to play a few games last year just to take advantage of the fact that the Hawks already bought his west coast plane ticket. That was about it. Any number of players could have used D-League. I am sure they practice walking so Solomon Jones would have found it a huge benefit.

But all the Hawks have is a semi-relationship with the Utah Flash. I say semi because they have it, I just do not know if they will use it. We did not even have a summer league team. I do not feel I am asking for much. Just give me something to root for Hawks. Put Mario West down there for 20 games. Give Othello Hunter some looks outside of practice. Please.

Well, apparently, Brant Anderson, the owner of the Flash, is listening to my cries. D-league purest do not like this guy. He is apparently making a mockery of the league. That may be true and I hope it is not, but regardless, I am turning into quite the rubbernecker.

First, he offered (first via twitter) for Stephon Marbury to come play for them. Which is apparently not possible, but still kind of awesome.

Then, he put up 100,000 dollars of his own money to entice Michael Jordan and Byron Russel to play one on one. Not going to happen, but this guy is a more civilized version of Lane Kiffen. Who was talking about the Flash two months ago. Lets get him to Atlanta to market the Hawks.

And now, I just found out for a cool 150 dollars you can go try out for the Flash at Clayton State University. If I had a) 150 dollars to spend and b) felt no shame, I would be there in heart beat. I am still going to try and make it down to the gym and (if they let me in) watch. And if someone makes the team from that tryout, I am going to make it official and become a full fledged Utah Flash fan. Already looking for my first jersey.

Also, if the Utah affiliation does not work out, I am scouring the land for investors to get a team in Greenville, SC.

I have a dream for Othello Hunter. To one day be an average eighth man in the NBA. That is not meant to be backhanded at all. An eighth man plays a vital role on an NBA championship team every year. And the money is not bad either.

Something I love about the NBA is that there are fifteen guys on the team. And they are out there in the open. No helmet. Not out in left field. Just three feet away right on the court (or at the end of the bench). And sure that makes the NBA a superstar league, but it also gives you the chance to really root for and grow attached to the fourteenth guy on the roster.

Of course, when you are making hundreds of thousands of dollars like Othello did last year, it can be hard to think he is scraping and fighting for a dream. But he is. He is desperately trying to make it in the NBA, and like any 14th man that wants to improve, just wants a chance to show what he can do, it is tough not to root for.

The Hawks will have four "prominent" free agents attending their team camp and fighting for a roster spot. Mario West is the most familiar 13th man in the country. Othello Hunter is a known commodity (or at least we know he looks good in a suit on the sidelines), and Garret Siler is a local product from Augusta St. But who is the fourth? Who is Courtney Sims? Just last years 6'11'' D-league MVP who averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Being a Hawks fan (and the fact that we do not really have a team in it), I am woefully and shamefully inept at talking about the D-league. So I scoured the brain of Scott from Ridiculous Upside. A man who has forgotten more about the D-league than I know about life. And we talked Moore, the benefits of the D-league, and the Hawks recent abhorrence in using it.

PH: Courtney Sims has put up incredible numbers in the D-league. Why do you think he has yet to stick with a team?

RU: The biggest knock on Sims is that he's not bulky enough to play the 5 - too lanky. He is reasonably athletic and a legit 6'11" so playing center is definitely something he can handle in the NBA, but that's been the biggest knock. The other problem is that he really hasn't seen the right opportunities. His rookie season, he was picked up out of Michigan as an undrafted free agent by Indiana, but was stuck behind Jermaine O'Neal, Jeff Foster, Troy Murphy, Ike Diogu, David Harrison and Shawne Williams. Not a great bunch, but enough to put an undrafted rookie out on the streets by January after 3 games played. From there, it was the D-League, in which he didn't dominate. After a Summer League with New Orleans (they've been rumored to love him, but never call him up), he came back and dominated the D-League. He was called up to the Suns, but they didn't really need him other than to appease the league and have 13 guys on their roster. At the end of the D-League season, the Knicks had him in for two 10-days, but once again he was just a warm, injury-free body.

In short, I guess I'd say he hasn't stuck yet simply because the teams that have given him a call-up haven't really given him an opportunity.

PH: Does the d-league style of play differ from the NBA?

RU: It's a different, faster game actually, but not so different that stats don't correlate, at least to some extension. One of the RU writers looked at this in-depth actually (http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2009/6/10/904563/scrubs-not-so-fast-the-production -- feel free to scroll down to the bigs segment). Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Lou Amundson are probably two of the players that were able to get a call-up and had a chance to contribute and both fill their roles well in the NBA. Other than that, it doesn't differ as much as people are sometimes led to believe. Though all players are looking to be noticed, it's been shown that players on winning D-League teams get better opportunities in Summer League, Europe and the NBA, oddly enough.

Courtney's team in Iowa was pretty good so his numbers aren't an abberation - around him he had former/current NBAer's Cartier Martin, Demetris Nichols, JamesOn Curry, Denham Brown, Anthony Tolliver, John Edwards and Alando Tucker at various points of the season. Not the biggest of names, but it shows that he wasn't a one man show, either.

PH: If Sims made the Hawks, he would be the fourth big behind (Horford, Zaza, and Joe Smith). With guys like him and Othello Hunter last year, do you think it is better for them and/or the team in the long run to play more minutes in the D-league or to practice and experience the NBA while on the bench?

RU: I'm the biggest D-League homer in the blogging world, so I'd obviously say that it's definitely better to develop in the D-League rather than sit on an NBA bench. That said, I'm going to try backing this up.

Four years ago, I might've said differently, but the D-League is becoming a lot more talented than it used to be. Last season when Hunter was in the D-League (all 3 games), he didn't exactly dominate - shooting 1-for-9 in one game. In his case, I'd say playing against talented players (Richard Hendrix, Lance Allred, Dwayne Jones, Pops Mensha-Bonsu, Courtney Sims and Rod Benson namely) rather than sitting on the bench may have helped him out. He didn't really look ready in the playoffs and whether that was due to being a bit rusty or not, I don't know, but had he played in 30 games during the season in the D-League, I think it would have helped. Worse case scenario is he's better than everyone else, doesn't improve, but at least gains some confidence. Best case is that he's playing nightly, being the focus of the coach (perhaps individually as NBA teams can send assistants with players on assignment), and getting better by playing against near-equal competition.

PH: What part of Sims' game will translate easily to the NBA? Can his game adjust/work playing less than ten minutes a game?

RU: Typically, I think high-energy bigs translate best numbers-wise to the NBA (the Lou Amundson/Pops Mensah-Bonsu mold). Courtney's obviously not going to average his 23 points, 11 boards and 2 blocks that he did in the D-League as the fourth big playing 10ish minutes a night. He's very fundamentally sound though, and because of that, I don't think there will be much of a drop, actually. He probably won't wow the Hawks fanbase in 10 minutes, but fans won't be upset that he's in their either. He'll come in, hit the boards, maybe swat a shot, and if needed, he has a pretty right handed jump hook he can use at will.

PH: Where must Sims' improve?

RU: As I said, fundamentally, he's pretty skilled. He's a little slower than you'd like and he could bulk up, but his skillset has probably reached it's potential, save for adding some range to a limited jump shot (probably good out to about 10-12 feet).

If he gets a legit shot at making the team, he'll probably stick, as the downside is at a minimum. I'm a big Garrett Siler fan though, so I know he has some competition!

I feel like a better person after this interview. Thanks Scott for some great info. Personally, I hope the Hawks start taking advantage of the D-league more. And I have to agree that if Othello Hunter was in anyway useful in the playoffs (whether it was because of injury, big leads, or a real role), it seems he would have been more prepared averaging big minutes at some point during the season in the D-league.

Even with only a couple roster spots left, I can actually say I am pretty excited to see how this thing shakes out. And if a few of our boys find their way back to the D-league, head over to Ridiculous Upside.

As Bret over a Hoopinion pointed out, the signing of Joe Smith and the lack of any news about any other player firms up the debt chart in a way that almost makes certain Mario West and Othello Hunter will fill two of the final three remaining roster spots. The blind, loyal, optimistic, idiosyncratic, homer in me rejoices at this news.

But if you do not possess said qualities, fear not. You too can be overjoyed. Because once again "the Mario" will keep its home in the Atl.

The Mario "Denotes those occasions in which a player logs less than one minute of playing time and therefore fails to compile any meaningful statistics."

Basketbawful is one of the best NBA blogs around and I hope they know I am being 100 percent serious and complimentary when I say this might be the very best thing they have ever done.

So here is to many more Mario's in 09-10.

Not so long ago, I took a look at potential free-agent point guards whom the Orlando Magic could sign to fill out their bench. Team GM Otis Smith has made it clear that point guard is his highest priority; he's also made it clear that he'd also like to add another big man to the roster. With no movement on the point guard front--except the rumor that Smith is still pursuing restricted free agent C.J. Watson via a sign-and-trade with Golden State--it's high time we look at potential power forwards and centers Orlando could probably sign on the cheap.

The operative word is "cheap." As we've noted previously, the Magic are over the salary cap and have used both the mid-level and bi-annual exceptions, meaning they can only sign players to minimum contracts. NBA experience determines the specific finances of said deals, about which you can read here.

Unfortunately for the Magic, the best minimum-salary bigs have already signed. Joe Smith spurned the Cleveland Cavaliers to latch on with the Atlanta Hawks, while Rasho Nesterovic has re-upped with the Toronto Raptors after a one-year detour with the Indiana Pacers and, in arguably the best signing of the summer, the Cavs landed the productive-but-injury-hobbled power forward Leon Powe. Thus, there are few standouts on this list. Bear in mind that whomever Orlando chooses will be last on the depth chart, behind two All-Stars (Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis), two youngsters combining to earn nearly $10 million this season (Marcin Gortat and Brandon Bass), and the second-year player whom the team views as a long-term building block (Ryan Anderson). In short, the Magic's mystery signee will hardly play, so he need not be exceptional.

After the jump, brief breakdowns of no fewer than 17 free-agent power forwards and centers who are still on the market.

And, as with the point guard piece, I've excluded D-Leaguers, because Smith has never made a D-League call-up in his tenure as Orlando's GM.

Calvin Booth | Jarron Collins | Jason Collins
Melvin Ely | Adonal Foyle | Aaron Gray
Juwan Howard | Othello Hunter | Sean Marks
Mikki Moore | Johan Petro | Malik Rose
James Singleton | Brian Skinner | Stromile Swift
Jake Voskuhl | Lorenzen Wright

Calvin Booth:

The Good: Booth has parlayed his exceptional shot-blocking skills into a 10-year career in which he's earned nearly $36 million. He still has the touch, averaging a block per every 13 minutes played over his last two seasons, which he's split between Philadelphia, Minnesota, and Sacramento. And he'd undoubtedly accept a minimum contract.

The Bad: Just about everything else. He's not much of a scorer or rebounder, and one wonders if he'll even sign in the NBA this year as teams plan to carry fewer players due to the weak economy.

The Verdict: In spite of everything, he's hardly the worst name on this list, which should keep him in the conversation.

Head back to the top.

Jarron Collins:

The Good: Regarded as a stout, heady defender--just like his twin brother, whom we'll discuss shortly--Jarron Collins has carved out a respectable 8-year career despite having no discernible offensive skills. The contributions that have kept him in the league this long must go beyond the box score, since his per-game stats (4.3 points, 3.1 boards, 0.2 blocks in 16.9 minutes) are far from exceptional.

The Bad: As with most of the guys on this list, Jarron Collins is a zero on offense.

The Verdict: Think of Jarron as a younger version of Adonal Foyle, minus the rebounding and shot-blocking. In other words, think of him as Adonal Foyle, minus the skills that have kept him in the league.

Head back to the top.

Jason Collins:

The Good: Jason's career has eerily mirrored that of his brother but he enjoys a higher profile due to his presence on the New Jersey Nets' Eastern Conference Championship-winning teams in 2001/2002 and 2002/2003.

The Bad: Statistically speaking, he's worse than Jarron, in spite of his higher profile. Despite hardly straying more than 10 feet from the immediate basket area on offense, he's a career 41% shooter (Jarron's more efficient, but still unacceptable, with a career 45.9% mark from the field) . For some perspective, two years ago, Rashard Lewis shot 40.9%...from three-point range. "Awful" really doesn't begin to describe Jason's offensive ability.

The Verdict: Unless his great reputation somehow precedes him, it's hard to imagine Jason Collins playing in the NBA this season. Jarron is the better option of the two.

Head back to the top.

Melvin Ely:

The Good: If nothing else, Ely's built like a semi truck. Listed at 6'10" and 260 pounds, but likely heavier, Ely can take up space in the paint.

The Bad: But in all likelihood, when he's in there offensively, he's not doing much good. Discounting dunks and tip-ins, Ely converted just 31.3% of his shots in the immediate basket area last season. You'd almost prefer him to step out and take a jumper, which he's willing to do. 82games classifies nearly one-third of Ely's shots last season, as jumpers, which he converted at a 33.3% clip.

The Verdict: Maybe the Magic could live with Ely's considerable offensive shortcomings if he could at least rebound, but even then he's mediocre, with a career rebound rate of 11.7%, which puts him in Brian Cook (11.2% career) territory. He's a poor all-around player who hardly cracked New Orleans' rotation last season, despite their dearth of frontcourt talent. With all that said, Smith tried to acquire Ely from Charlotte at the 2007 trading deadline, so we at least know he was on Smith's radar at one point. For Orlando's purposes, it's probably best if he isn't.

Head back to the top.

Adonal Foyle:

The Good: Say what you will about his poor hands and finishing ability, but Foyle's still a tremendous defender, rebounder, and shot-blocker. I stumbled all over myself in order to praise Foyle after his first appearance last season, in which coach Stan Van Gundy called upon him to defend Yao Ming. Foyle responded with 4 points, 7 boards, and 3 blocked shots against the NBA's most offensively skilled center, in relief of the foul-maligned Howard. And, on the non-basketball side of the equation, Foyle's a great guy to have in the locker room, and as someone who eschews stories about athletes' intangibles, that's not something to take lightly

The Bad: Outside of the occasional put-back attempt, all Foyle can do on offense is set screens and box out.

The Verdict: Whichever team signs Foyle--if he's even in the league at all--will get some bang for its buck. He's worth the money for his locker-room wisdom--not a vocal leader, but more of a quiet, willing, mentor--alone. The fact that the Magic re-signed him last season solely to be a sparring partner for Howard during practices attests to his "intangible" value, and all told, he's in the upper tier of players on this list.

Head back to the top.

Aaron Gray:

The Good: In two seasons with Chicago--which owns his restricted free-agent rights, giving it the ability to match any offer another team makes for his services--the 24-year-old Gray has shown flashes of being a solid, rotation-caliber player. Consider, for instance, his career per-36-minute averages of 12.4 points and 10.5 boards. Not bad for a second-round draft pick, and arguably better than another second-rounder from the 2007 draft class who recently signed for $3 million annually.

The Bad: He's noted for his utter lack of athleticism and speed, and the Bulls would likely match a minimum-salary offer, meaning the Magic would have to obtain him in a sign-and-trade deal.

The Verdict: Physical limitations aside, Gray has decent low-post, back-to-the-basket scoring instincts, and would be worth a long-term investment were it not for the more than $100 million Orlando has tied up in Howard and Gortat over the next several seasons. If he can be had cheaply, he might be the best fit for Orlando of any player listed here. That possibility seems very remote, however.

Head back to the top.

Juwan Howard:

The Good: The opposite of Gray in many respects, as a been-there, done-that veteran. He's lasted quite awhile, hasn't he? Howard, at age 35, appeared in 42 games last season, no doubt surprising countless television viewers who assumed he'd been out of basketball for quite some time. Last season, his 15th in the league, he set a new career-high by shooting 51% from the field. And he's earned a reputation as a good locker-room presence

The Bad: If the Magic want rebounding from their end-of-the-bench big man--and why wouldn't they?--they aren't going to find it with Howard, whose total rebound rate of 9.9 last season puts him in (here comes that phrase again!) Brian Cook territory.

The Verdict: My guess is that he doesn't have much of anything else to contribute at the NBA level. He's probably not a markedly better option for Orlando than, say, either of the Collins twins.

Head back to the top.

Othello Hunter:

The Good: In extremely limited minutes for the Atlanta Hawks last season--92, to be precise--Hunter posted encouraging numbers. 8.6 points per 36 minutes isn't great, but the 9.4 boards and 15.3% rebounding rate? That's encouraging. And at 23, there's potential for long-term development.

The Bad: He's listed at just 6'08" and 225 pounds, making him a less-than-ideal size for the position. Plus, the Hawks didn't think highly enough of him to play him very often, although that might be more of an indictment of coach Mike Woodson's ability to manage players than it is of Hunter's skills.

The Verdict: Based on the small sample size, Hunter appears to be worth at least a training-camp invitation; I'd stay away from offering him a guaranteed deal until he shows what he's got in the preseason. He might stand to earn more money overseas, but at the same time, he might not want to give up on the NBA just yet. Put him at or around the top of the list, for now.

Head back to the top.

Sean Marks

The Good: Based on what I've seen, there aren't many scrappier players in the NBA. Marks is a decent rebounder (13% rebound rate) and an average shot-blocker (1.4 blocks/36 career) who plays hard. 110% and all that.

The Bad: Utterly anemic offensively, with a career 44.9% mark from the field, although he's a combined 49.5% in his last two seasons. All the hustle in the world can't put the ball in the basket.

The Verdict: He's one of the main reasons the Hornets traded for Emeka Okafor and signed Ike Diogu this summer, as Marks just doesn't belong in a contender's rotation. But in Orlando, as the 6th big man, he wouldn't be in the rotation. Not a great option, but certainly not the worst, either.

Head back to the top.

Mikki Moore:

The Good: He's only 2 years removed from averaging 8.5 points and 6 rebounds per game with Sacramento, with a respectable Player Efficiency Rating of 11.5.

The Bad: Last year, the Boston Celtics signed Moore after the Kings bought him out, hoping he'd approximate the contributions P.J. Brown made to their championship team in 2008. Predictably, it didn't work out. Moore plays hard and means well, but was so utterly lost defensively in Boston that coach Doc Rivers couldn't count on him when the games mattered more. Indeed, Moore played only 66 minutes in the postseason, while Brian Scalabrine--Brian Scalabrine!--played 246. If that's not a strike against Moore, I'm not sure what is.

The Verdict: As a sixth big man--as opposed to the third in injury-riddled Boston--Moore isn't such a bad option. And he'd actually have a fair amount of time to learn Van Gundy's defensive rotations, as opposed to last year, when he had to take a crash-course in Boston's plans. He wouldn't be a bad pickup, but certainly wouldn't be a great one, either.

Head back to the top.

Johan Petro:

The Good: His rebounding and blocked-shots statistics compare favorably to Marks', and he's 10 years younger to boot.

The Bad: His offense, though, is also similar to Marks. Worse, it's on the decline. In his first two seasons, he shot a combined 51.4% from the field. In his last two? 41.8%, a staggering drop-off due to his over-reliance on an iffy jumper. Yikes. Now the Magic wouldn't ask him--or anyone on this list, really--to create any offense for himself. But you'd nonetheless like whomever they sign to be able to bang an open jumper every now and again, as Tony Battie did last year, and as Brandon Bass will do (much more effectively) this year.

The Verdict: I'm lukewarm on Petro, which makes him better than almost everyone on this list. Of the young players, he seems the most likely to be available for the minimum.

Head back to the top.

Malik Rose:

The Good: Rose would bring championship experience to Orlando, as he won titles with the San Antonio Spurs in both 1999 and 2003. These weren't cheap rings for Rose, as he averaged 12.9 minutes per game in '99 and 24.5 in '03.

The Bad: Did the absence of any skills analysis in the last paragraph tip my hand? Rose doesn't have anything in the tank anymore, it appears. His Player Efficiency Ratings in the last three years are in the single-digits, and his rebounding rates have dipped into the 11-and-12 range. He never was an offensive stalwart, having never shot better than 47.7% from the field in any of his 13 professional seasons, and he hasn't so much as cracked 40% in any of his last 4 seasons.

The Verdict: Rose has enjoyed a decent career by most metrics, but his skills have diminished too sharply to justify granting him a roster spot.

Head back to the top.

James Singleton:

The Good: The 28-year-old James is coming off a career season with the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 5.1 points per game, in just 14.9 minutes, while shooting 52.9% from the floor. His ability to finish inside boosted his field-goal percentage, as he converted a stellar 71.4% of his shots in the immediate basket area in 2008/2009. For comparison's sake, consider that Dwight Howard shot 62.2% and Marcin Gortat shot 63.4% in the same situations.

The Bad: First, there's the question of how much Hall-of-Fame point guard Jason Kidd inflated Singleton's stats; they'd almost certainly return to Earth in Orlando, even potentially playing alongside All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson. Second, there's probably no way Dallas wouldn't match a minimum contract offer for his services, as he is a restricted free agent, and owner Mark Cuban is a freakin' billionaire (the Magic's decision to match his offer to Gortat doesn't figure into this analysis, because Cuban would match a minimum offer to Singleton regardless of the team that extended it). Finally, he's more of a combo forward than a true big man, although he still played roughly 80% of his minutes at power forward last season.

The Verdict: If the Magic can somehow find a way to grab him, their fans wouldn't have much reason to complain. He'd be worth it, even when one accounts for the statistical decline in his play without Kidd. Let me put it this way: the Magic's chances of signing him are so infinitesimally remote that he's hardly worth considering, but I included him in this post anyway because he was, frankly, just that impressive last season.

Head back to the top.

Brian Skinner:

The Good: One can take or leave Skinner's rebounding--15.1% career rate, 13.9% last year with the Clippers--but that block rate (3.6% career, 4.6% last year and 6.0% the year before) deserves some attention. Skinner is perhaps the quintessential, defensive-minded, end-of-the-bench big man. His overall statistics last year suggest that, even at 33, he's an NBA-caliber player.

The Bad: In the tradition of many mediocre NBA bigs, he tends to shoot a lot of jumpers at a low percentage.

Also, this goatee.

The Verdict: Skinner, it seems to me, is the sort of emergency big man who's not going to greatly aid his team's cause when he's on the floor... but he's not going to hurt it, either. That's about all you can ask from a sixth big man, which is why I endorse Skinner more strongly than I do any of the other veterans on this list, save for Foyle.

Head back to the top.

Stromile Swift:

The Good: He has a bad reputation for never living up to his potential--he was the second overall pick of the 1999 draft--but he's actually carved out a decent career. In 2003/04, under the tutelage of Hubie Brown, he posted a Player Efficiency Rating of 19.7, for instance, and his career PER is an above-average 16.7. So he's not as bad a player as some people might expect due to the negativity surrounding him, which stems from his high draft position.

The Bad: Sadly, Swift's mother passed away in February, which (obviously) upset him very much. He was "inconsolable," according to his agent, and a week later, the Nets waived him after his agent talked things over with GM Kiki Vandeweghe. He signed with Phoenix--where he played with Magic free-agent signee Matt Barnes, who also lost his mother recently--but did not contribute much. In short, it's been a tough year for Swift, and concerns remain about his readiness to play basketball to the best of his (underrated) ability.

The Verdict: Orlando might be the ideal landing place for Swift, as he'd re-join former teammates Anderson, Barnes, and Vince Carter. He'd also play with Nelson, a team captain and leader, who dealt with the sudden and unexpected death of his father in 2007. In short, he'd be among friends. Of this we can be certain.

Whether Orlando has much use for him, though, is less sure. He's still a great athlete (this dunk is less than two years old!) and, as I mentioned, a somewhat underrated player. If Smith feels as though he can bank on Swift's readiness to contribute in an end-of-the-bench role, then he'd be a solid pickup. But if Swift isn't mentally "there" yet, the Magic shouldn't commit to him when there are other, better options who are ready.

Head back to the top.

Jake Voskuhl:

The Good: At 6'11" and 245 pounds, Voskuhl's a big boy. Yup, that's all I've got.

The Bad: Last year, in Toronto, he posted a PER of 0.4, shot 26.7% from the field, and committed a turnover on almost exactly one-quarter of his possessions used. He also committed one foul for every four minutes he played. He was so cosmically dreadful that Basketbawful coined the term "Voskuhl" for big men whose "combined fouls and turnovers exceed his combined points and rebounds over the course of a game."

And he was no great shakes prior to last season, either.

The Verdict: There's quite simply no compelling reason to believe Voskuhl merits an NBA roster spot at this point in his career.

Head back to the top.

Lorenzen Wright:

The Good: Pardon the echo chamber here, but at 6'11" and 225 pounds, Wright's a big boy..

The Bad: He's probably worse than Voskuhl, if you can believe it. Injuries have limited Wright to 36 games over the last two seasons, in which he's combined to shoot 16-of-48, or 33.3%. No NBA team is ever going to ask Wright to do anything on offense, but his other stats don't indicate he's worth having on the floor. He'll turn 34 in the first week of the season.

The Verdict: Yeah, his NBA days are probably finished. Orlando need not seriously consider Wright, but if there isn't anyone else on the board, they might have to settle for him.

Head back to the top.

A quick survey of the above players shows that only four (Foyle, Gray, Singleton, and Skinner) are near-locks to make an NBA roster this season, which sort of illustrates the talent pool with which we're dealing. Fortunately, the Magic won't require much of their last big man, which makes these choices sightly more attractive. Foyle and Skinner are the best realistic options, at least to me, and the only way Smith can go wrong here is by signing someone on the level of Voskuhl and Wright. In other words, don't get too down on the Magic if, say, Moore is the best they can get for the minimum salary.

I remember being sort of kind of excited about Shelden Williams' summer league performance. Even in my optimism I always knew that Mr. Parker was dominating men who would never be in the league in a style of play that would rarely be seen in an actual game. I of course chose to ignore said facts because the only other option was crying about how a late first rounder went in the top five.

Let us pause on this trip down memory lane to throw up.

Everyone good. Well, good. Because the news of yesterday is that Jeff Teague is going to be a star and Othello Hunter is ready to dunk on your head.

And of course we are not even talking summer league. We are talking mini camp Which is code for don't ask us why we didn't have a summer league team. Can you not see we have a mini camp? But it is July and I love the NBA so lets dive into the world of false optimism.

Jeff Teague

But the good news is Jeff Teague is doing what he is suppose to do. He is being the best player on the court. It won't translate one to one, but Teague is at least holding up his end of the bargain. The one thing that may translate is this little line from Sekou Smith's twitter, "Teague is really impressive. His quickness is off the charts."

You may make more shots against bad competition. You may finish a little easier against borderline 12th man talent. But you are either fast or your not, and without a doubt Jeff Teague is really fast. I can be excited about that.

Othello Hunter

The other good news, more because I like him and less because it may actually affect the team, Othello Hunter has gotten better. Sekou and Micah Hart both saw him this time last year and say quite emphatically the man is better. Granted Othello played 92 total minutes last year so whether the improvement can translate to a regular season role in the rotation who knows. And by who knows, I mean probably not.

But mark my words now, one day Othello Hunter will be an above average 8th man in the league. And I hope it is with the Hawks.

Some other notes

A guy with the nickname "Homicide" was invited to camp. Let us all begin praying this man makes the team.

Yaroslav Korolev can shoot. I like that. Then again, so could Thomas Gardner. By the way, Mr. Korolev was drafted 12th. I forgot that. Good work there Clippers. Somewhere Danny Granger is laughing.

Micah Hart's recap from yesterday.

Jeff Teague is officially a Hawk.

Joe Smith anyone? How about Ben Wallace? Considering the Cavs felt the need to go get Joe Smith when they already had Ben Wallace on the team, I would take Joe on a one year deal and be quite happy about that.

Actual blogging coming later today. Your thoughts on summer league? Who is ready to buy a Teague jersey? And I will pay someone five dollars if he or she can convince me to buy an Othello Hunter jersey. And I want to be convinced.

Recapping a Busy Night In The D-League

Just my thoughts as I peruse the box scores with close attention to potential NBA Gatorade Call-ups. I mean, seriously, there's like 40 former NBAer's with in the D-League with RidiculousUpside. Here's a rundown

Reno 102, Idaho 91 -- Reno was led by Richie Frahm, who scored 25 points, but contributed nothing else to the box score. Patrick Ewing Jr. came off the bench to score 20 points, had eight boards, and swatted four shots, though shot just 4-for-13 from the field. Gerry McNamara had 15 points and five assists off the bench, including 4-for-6 from 3-point territory. For the Stampede, Former Cav Lance Allred had 20 points and five boards, former Bobcat Kevin Burleson had 10 points, six assists, and former a-lot-of-teams Luke Jackson had 15 points, seven assists, and five turnovers.

Erie 98, Sioux Falls 96 -- Erie had four players in double figures, led by Erik Daniels, who scored 21 points, had seven assists, and six rebounds. For Sioux Falls, Bobby Jones had 22 points andd 1 boards. John Edwards had 15 points, eight rebounds. Kasib Powell missed his second straight game.

Albuquerque 120, Tulsa 114 -- For Albuquerque, 6'8", 320 pound Jasper Johnson dominated. He had 42 points and 19 rebounds. Keith McLeod had a career game, scoring 29 points and dishing 11 assists, somehow getting to the line TWENTY times. Will Conroy was a DNP, presumably with an eye injury. Tulsa was led by former Jazz first round pick Ryan Humphrey, who put up 42 points and 11 rebounds. Draft eligible Keith Clark scored 20 points and had eight rebounds.

Iowa 107, Utah 96 -- Iowa was led by 6'5" guard Othyus Jeffers, who scored 27 points and added nine rebounds. Demetris Nichols had 25 points, but turned the ball over five times. The Flash were led by Ronald Dupree with 22 points, five boards, five assists. Dontell Jefferson added 19 points.

Los Angeles 116, Anaheim 104 -- The D-Fender's were led by Gabriel Hughes, who I have no clue about. He finished with 22 points and 15 boards off the bench. Lakers' second round pick Joe Crawford had 20 points. CJ Giles, Dwayne Mitchell, and Longar Longar all didn't play. Anaheim was led by James White, who had a great all-around game. He scored 33 points, had 11 boards, and seven assists. Hawks send-down Othello Hunter had 10 points and 11 rebounds and teammate Thomas Gardner had 26 points and seven boards.

The Bakersfield Jam snuck by RGV, with a 107-106 victory. Derrick Byars led Bakersfield with 24 points and seven boards. Mateen Cleaves added 13 points and 14 assists. RGV was led by former Cav Jawad Williams, who had 24 points. Jared Jordan also had a good game, best in the D-League by far, with 23 points, nine assists, and six rebounds.

Rasho Nesterovic scored 21 points. Troy Murphy had 19 rebounds. Jeff Foster had 12 points (5-6 FGA) and 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. Fox Sports South must have chosen not to show Roy Hibbert begging Jim O'Brien to put him in the game.

Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby did what they could offensively* but they barely combined to match Danny Granger's production. Acie Law IV took advantage of his late introduction to the game and fueled a run that got the Hawks within 7 with 7:59 to play. Atlanta had three chances to cut the lead further (four if you count Maurice Evans' missed tip on Joe Johnson's three-pointer) but could only muster an off-balance Marvin Williams jump shot, a Joe Johnson runner, and a Joe Johnson three-point attempt.

*36 Hawks field goals, just 13 assists. Offensively, it wasn't a pretty night as you might expect with a frontcourt rotation decimated by injuries and five-man units that likely made their debut last night: Law/Johnson/Evans/Hunter/Pachulia to finish the 3rd and open the 4th quarter for example.

On Indiana's possession following Johnson's missed three-pointer, the Hawks forced another missed shot but couldn't control the defensive rebound. Marquis Daniels eventually made a jumper on Indiana's second chance and the Hawks never again got closer than 9 points.

In what is becoming a common occurrence, an Atlanta player was asked after the game to comment on the opposing player who did whatever he wanted against the Hawks "defense." Here's Joe Johnson on Danny Granger:

"He's a pretty good player, I can't take nothing away from him. He made a lot of good shots tonight, so give him credit."

I think there's a small, subconscious part of Joe Johnson that wonders on nights like Tuesday, "How many points could I score if I got to play against our own defense?"

Johnson on his team:

"We haven't been playing together, playing with any energy, like we were in those first six games. I think we've gotten real complacent and we haven't been playing team basketball."

Can't wait for tonight's game to tip-off. Neither can Joe:

"We can’t beat anybody like this."

It took a couple of weeks but this is starting to resemble a Hawks team.

Excuse while I beat my head against a hard surface for a moment.

Okay, I'm back.

In better news, Sekou reports that Horford will try to play tonight:

After his injury, Horford limped to the locker room and never returned, staying in the locker room to soak his ankle in ice. He walked out of the locker room on his own after the game and said he would begin treatment this morning with the hope of playing against the Wizards.

Maurice Evans doesn't want to make excuses:

"I don’t want to use it as an excuse..."

But can't help himself:

"...but we’re just not at full strength right now. We’ve been hobbling since that Boston game."

You've also played New Jersey (without Josh Boone) twice and Indiana (without Mike Dunleavy, Jr.) once. Boone and Dunleavy aren't josh Smith but if you can take the Celtics to the final half-second in Boston without Smith, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the team to compete against short-handed Net and Pacer teams. Unless, of course, the Hawks' bench is, once again, terrible.

While Randolph Morris runs his personal foul to minutes played ratio up to 10:23 and Mario West warms our hearts, Nick Fazekas is playing in Belgium and Anthony Morrow is demonstrating that there's at least one undrafted free agent from Georgia Tech that can contribute in tangible, positive ways for an NBA team.

Cornrows had so many compliments for Pacers that he had to bust out the bullet points.

Winning six straight to open the season then losing four straight is a rare feat according to the Elias Sports Bureau:

With a loss to the Pacers on Tuesday, the Hawks have lost four straight after starting the season 6-0. The only other team in NBA history to win at least six in a row to start a season immediately followed by a losing streak of four or more games was the Philadelphia Warriors in 1960. They won their first nine games and then lost four straight.

I'm worried about CoCo.

Updating yesterday's post...

TEAM DEFENSE GAMES 1-5

Team

Poss

Def Eff

eFG%

FT Rate

OR%

TO%

ATL

91.6

0.94

43.2

18.0

27.6

16.7

Before and after now include an equal number of games.

TEAM DEFENSE GAMES 6-10

Team

Poss

Def Eff

eFG%

FT Rate

OR%

TO%

ATL

92.9

1.20

53.4

33.1

32.7

14.4

Ouch.

Last night, the Hawks contrived to hit their four-game average of allowing 1.2 points per possession on the nose despite improving in three of the four factors relative to their recent defensive collapse. Lesson learned: Allowing your opponent to shoot 60% from the floor is destructive in and of itself.

91.3

1.12

55.1

39.7

15.2

16.4

BOS

91.3

1.13

45.4

44.7

35.7

16.4

I'm not sure I remember how to write one of these when the Hawks lose...

Little to be down about as the Hawks almost stole one in Boston without Josh Smith and, for the second half, Zaza Pachulia. Full credit to Paul Pierce for making the difficult game-winner as well as for getting all those easy buckets in the final three quarters that made the game-winner possible. Factor in that Pierce may not have been the best player the Celtics had on the floor last night (Garnett: 25 points on 10-16 shooting, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, and just 1 turnover) and you can safely situate yourself somewhere between settling for a moral victory and not getting worked into a lather over a loss.

That the short-handed Hawks were in the game despite sending the Celtics to the line at least 9 times every quarter and surrendering 35.7% of all possible Celtic offensive rebounds is a tribute to their defensive performance (at least until the first field goal attempt of a Boston possession was launched) and outstanding three-point shooting from Marvin Williams, Maurice Evans, and Flip Murray*.

*Mike Bibby made both of his three-point attempts but that's not as exceptional given his role on the team.

This Hawks team, through seven games, is really quite extraordinary. Last year's team offered inconsistent effort and no threat from beyond the arc. This year's team has played hard for 336 straight minutes and uses the three-point shot as a serious offensive weapon. They will almost certainly fail to maintain their 42.4% mark from behind the line (and their opponents will almost certainly improve upon their 28.3% three-point shooting) but they've fundamentally diversified their offense in a way that takes advantage of the skills of their three best players: Joe Johnson, Smith, and Al Horford. Once Smith and Pachulia return and (presumably) shore up the rebounding on the both ends of the court, the Hawks won't need to shoot this well from beyond the arc. Just by taking the extra shots they earn from three-point range will pay off presuming they make them at even a slightly above-average rate.

Thoughts I failed to fit in the above but still feel are worth mentioning:

Al Horford sat for 20:47 of the first half because he had two fouls. Though both his second and fourth fouls could accurately be described as "dumb," he finished the game with five fouls. I obviously don't know if it would have made a difference had his minutes been distributed in a way that allowed him to play until he fouled out but I really think it's a waste to keep your best post player on the bench for a long time because you're concerned about something that might or might not happen. Especially when you begin the game with a short-handed post rotation and finish the game so depleted that both Marvin Williams and Maurice Evans play stretches of the fourth quarter at power forward.

Randolph Morris's 4 minutes last night may be the best thing that has ever happened to Othello Hunter's NBA career.

Flip Murray should be an option in the fourth quarter rather than a guy you shoehorn into lineups at the expense of better players who are also playing better that night.

Mario West's 2 possession (1 for them, 1 for us) performance to close the first quarter redeemed Woodson's usage pattern. For one night, at least.

I think it's a fair opinion, should anyone air it, that the Hawks were only in position to go ahead in the final 10 seconds because Ray Allen missed a lot of open three-pointers.

I'm not proud of the part of me that wanted to see Solomon Jones and Kendrick Perkins get in a tussle, but I must acknowledge that it exists.

Mike Woodson:

"I think we've grown a lot since last season, thanks to the Celtics. They put us in that mode, that frame of mind, that you've got to come out every night and dig in and play.''

Garnett, on the final play:

"The last play was drawn up: Get the ball to Pierce; get the hell out the way. Superman's in the booth. Let's go home. That was the play, and if you don't believe that ask Doc Rivers and he'll say the same exact thing.''

Pierce:

"I sort of got to my sweet spot and I felt good the whole time. We're playing a lot of playoff teams early, so it's good for us to get close games. ... We're learning from them.''

Woodson again:

"A great player hit a great shot. I hate for the game to end - not like that. That game was played beautifully on both ends of the floor, by both teams, and they made a great play at the end.''

Al Horford's not down following the loss:

"Our team swagger is really high right now. We just want to play the game the right way, let people know we're serious.''

Kendrick Perkins continues his charm offensive:

"When Marvin Williams hit that shot in the corner, I could tell that (Pierce) was mad. I saw them dancing out there. They thought it was over. But the Big Three is never over."

Lucky for you that you get to ride their coattails, I guess.

The combined offensive efficiency last night made Doc Rivers uncomfortable:

"It was frustrating just trying to get a stop. You’ve got two of the top four defensive teams in the league, and on every possession the other team kept scoring. That’s frustrating for a coach. Then you get up by three or four, and they make a 3. I mean, they made amazing shots. For fans, it was fun."

Mark Bradley's euphoria over the Hawks' start now has him talking to himself and transcribing those conversations for print.

A brief update on Josh Smith's injury:

Woodson said he received a report on Josh Smith after Tuesday’s win in Chicago, and the news was good.

"They said the swelling finally started to go down and got some color back in his ankle," Woodson said. "So right now he’s just day-to-day, and we’ll see where he is when we get back from this road trip."

Smith suffered a high left ankle sprain in the first quarter of Friday’s win over Toronto and was expected to be out two to four weeks. While Woodson didn’t rule out a quick return, he insists Smith won’t be rushed back to action.

This Rotoworld note from mid-game is the sum total of information I can find this morning regarding Zaza Pachulia's injury.

Kelly Dwyer leads off this morning's Behind the Boxscore with the Hawks/Celtics game. Go read it in full. Scroll past the pic quickly, though.

Chris Sheridan is a believer:

After a 6-0 start, this night showed that the Hawks, who were blown out in this building four times during their seven-game playoff series against Boston last spring, are no fluke. This was their second game of a back-to-back set on the road, they were without Josh Smith, and did not have Zaza Pachulia for the second half after he injured his shoulder. What's more, this was the sixth quality opponent the Hawks had faced in their first seven games, they entered with the league's fourth-best defense, and they handled themselves with considerable and admirable aplomb -- a character trait they simply did not possess last postseason when they were an entirely different team on the road than they were at home.

Heck, the Hawks lacked aplomb plenty of times at home last season.

Michael at Braves & Birds is enjoying 'Nique the broadcaster as much as I am and for much the same reasons:

I'm digging Dominique Wilkins as the color guy. 'Nique could burp Le Marseillaise for an entire broadcast and I, like most Hawks fans, would enjoy it thoroughly. Being the best player in franchise history will give a guy that status. That said, his insights on the game are quite sharp. My concern about 'Nique calling games is that he is an executive with the Hawks, so he might be reticent to criticize the players or coaches. That hasn't been the case. For instance, he gently chided Woodson by expressing surprise that he did not bring Horford back in the game late in the second quarter. 'Nique noticed Allen's defensive miscue to free Williams for the go-ahead shot, after which I said to myself "so that's what a color guy is supposed to do."

Jay Busbee is skeptical that we're witnessing a true rebirth of the Hawks-Celtics rivalry.

Two of my favorite Hawks fans are not fans of Paul Pierce. I just can't agree with them on this issue.

An olive branch from Pierce to Hawks fans, via myself:

"The Hawks have been playing really well and we knew it was going to be a tough game. We watched them on film, how hard they play, they're one of the best defensive teams this year, and they have a lot of talent."

I think they do. Friday at and Saturday versus the Nets. I can't wait.
