Recap: Boston vs. Charlotte
Sports Network | October 29, 2009
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Ray Allen led all scorers with 18 points and Rajon Rondo added 10 points and 11 assists, as Boston spoiled Charlotte's season opener and held the Bobcats to a franchise-low scoring mark in a 92-59 rout at TD Garden.
Boston came from Cleveland after downing the Cavaliers, 95-89, on Tuesday night and didn't miss a beat, never trailing and holding the Bobcats to 31.1 percent shooting and an 0-for-10 mark from beyond the arc.
"I thought it was terrific," Boston coach Doc Rivers said about his team's defense. "I thought it was great. I thought, obviously, very active early. Tons of deflections. We keep that number and it was extremely -- as high as you can possibly probably get it at halftime. And I thought we carried it over, contested starts. Last two nights, I thought it has been absolutely wonderful."
Paul Pierce contributed 15 points, Shelden Williams donated 12 points with nine rebounds off the bench and Kevin Garnett joined Rondo with 10 points.
The Celtics shot only 43.4 percent from the floor and hoisted up 29 three- pointers. They made 11 of them, leading to a 33-point advantage beyond the arc.
Gerald Wallace was the only Bobcat in double figures with 10 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Raymond Felton added nine points, but needed 11 shots to do it. Tyson Chandler, a new addition in 2009, didn't score in over 20 minutes of game action.
"I did a hell of a coaching job. That's my first thought," said Bobcats head coach Larry Brown. "Our team wasn't prepared, weren't ready to play. That's nobody's fault but the coach. We got a lot of guys scared to death and that's tough."
Boston led 22-13 after 12 minutes and 42-31 at the half then turned on the jets behind a suffocating defensive effort in the third stanza. The Bobcats missed their first eight shots of the period. The Celtics scored the quarter's first 15 points with Pierce's trey opening a 57-31 edge prior to Gerald Henderson's jumper.
Charlotte still had just two points in the period -- and 33 points in the game -- until Henderson's free throws with 3:17 to go. The Bobcats barely reached double figures with 10 points in the quarter and stared up at a 67-41 deficit.
The fourth quarter was more of the same. Williams' layup with just under three minutes to play opened an 86-56 advantage and Boston played 11 players in the comfortable victory.
Boston won two of three versus the Bobcats last season with two of the contests going to overtime...The Celtics have won eight of 10 at home versus Charlotte...The game saw four technical fouls with Wallace and Chandler whistled for Charlotte, while Pierce and Kendrick Perkins were issued with technical fouls for the Celtics...Felton left the game in the second quarter and was given 15 stitches to his lower right lip. He later returned to the game.
