Maui Invitational, No. 2 Michigan State Vs. No. 11 Washington: Spartans Claw Back To Beat Huskies, 76-71

The third-place game in the Maui Invitational provided plenty of back-and-forth action, finishing with a flurry as Michigan State dropped Washington, 76-71. Down two with just 13 seconds left, Matthew Bryan-Amaning went to the line for Washington with a chance to tie the game. After making the first, Bryan-Amaning missed the second, allowing the Spartans to seal the game at the free throw line.

The Huskies did get one final look, an open three-point attempt by C.J. Wilcox, but couldn’t convert as Wilcox didn’t even hit the rim. The win gave Michigan State third-place in the hotly contested tournament after the Spartans lost a winner’s bracket game to UConn on Tuesday.

Kalin Lucas was a warrior for Michigan State, scoring 29 points on 7 of 13 shooting, including 4 of 5 from three point range. Lucas fell to the ground late in the second half, clutching his surgically repaired Achilles’ tendon and providing a scary moment for Spartans’ fans. He returned just minutes later to finish out the game, however. Durrell Summers added 12 points, including the deciding bucket, and five rebounds for Michigan State. Garrick Shermon (10 points) and Draymond Green (12) joined Lucas and Summers in double figures.

The Huskies were led by Bryan-Amaning’s 15 points and six rebounds. Isaiah Thomas added 13 points and a game-high six assists in a losing effort for Washington. Justin Holiday joined them in double figures with 12 points. The Washington bench broke from its normally productive ways, adding only a combined 15 points.

Michigan State improved to 2-1 in Maui and took home the third-place crown. Washington suffered back-to-back losses after an impressive win over Virginia in the opener to fall to 1-2, good for fourth place.
