Maybe San Diego State And Memphis Should Start Their Own Conference

San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk, who wants to join the Big 12:

We've been able to show how well we capture the San Diego television market in the last couple of years and have a program that's really on the rise and have a lot of things going for it. We're a member of the Mountain West Conference, and we think it's a very good conference. But if things realign, you never know how the sands are moving.

As always, San Diego State's best conference realignment pitch remains, "You get to travel to San Diego."

It makes a perverse sort of sense

if they were to bring Fresno along. Put them in different divisions, and under the old Big 12 scheduling model every school is guaranteed three California visits every four years for conference games, which would be nice for recruiting.

Unfortunately, since there’s no Big 12 Network to try and force onto cable systems, the media markets are irrelevant; the only boost would come from actual eyeballs watching Disney and the FOX regionals, and… well, nobody cares about watching SDSU and Fresno, despite what Jim Sterk thinks.

"You get to travel to San Diego."

That’s always good pitch. San Diego is one of my favorite American destination cities. Great weather, lots to do, wonderful variety of food to sample, what’s not to love about the place?
