Between losing nine seniors to graduation, sophomore Dwayne Polee transferring, and learning three of their incoming freshmen were academically-ineligible, the St. John's Red Storm was left with seven scholarship players on the roster heading into the upcoming basketball season.
You know what that means ... Open Tryouts!
26 St. John's students showed up at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday to fight, scratch and claw their way on to the squad.
As of Monday, no official word on whether or not anyone made the final cut. Guys like Chuck Anakwenze, who played at Division II Minnesota State Moorhead before tearing his ACL, stood a decent chance of at least getting a look to fill some bench space. Especially any big men, as junior college transfer God's Gift Achiawa is the team's only true center at the moment.
In the meantime, the Johnnies have extended a scholarship to one of their existing walk-ons.
Keep an eye on the open tryout results over at St. John's blog Rumble In The Garden.
