Creighton spoiled former coach Dana Altman's return with an 84-76 victory over Oregon in Game one of the College Basketball Invitational championship series.
Doug McDermott led the way with 21 points including nine straight giving Creighton a 58-41 lead with just over four minutes to go in the second half. Gregory Jones tossed in 15 points while Jahenns Manigat and Josh Jones had 11 apiece.
The Ducks were led by Joevan Catron's 15 points and nine rebounds. Garrett Sim and Jay-R Strowbridge added 14.
Altman returned to the Quest center where he is Creighton's all-time winningest coach recording 327 victories over 16 seasons including seven trips to the NCAA Tournament. Altman left Creighton last season to sign a $1.7 million dollar deal from Oregon. Even with his departure, Altman received a warm reception from the Qwest Center crowd.
Game two of this series will be played on Wednesday in Oregon with a third game also being played in Oregon on Friday if necessary.
