Jio Fontan Injury: USC Senior Tears ACL, Will Miss Season

USC has lost its leading returning scorer, Jio Fontan, to a torn ACL, crippling any hope the inexperienced team has of a postseason run.

The Trojan basketball team has lost its leading returning scorer, guard Jio Fontan, after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will miss his senior season, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Fontan averaged 10.5 points a game as a junior, a steep drop-off after tallying more than 15 PPG in his first two seasons. No one else who returns to the Trojans even averaged double-digits after Nikola Vucevic left for the NBA draft.

According to the L.A. Times, Fontan sustained the injury during an exhibition game against a Brazilian pro team in Sao Paulo. In two previous games against other Brazilian teams, he had averaged 28.5 points.

Without Fontan, the Trojans have only one starter from last year's team returning, sophomore Maurice Jones. The 5-foot-7 point guard averaged 9.9 points and 3.2 assists in 2010, but anytime a team returns one starter and he's Dustin Pedroia-sized, that team's in trouble.
