The St. Mary's Gaels have been among college basketball's most consistently successful mid-majors under the guidance of Randy Bennett. Since he took over the program in 2001, the school has won nearly two-thirds of their games. In the last four seasons, they've been to the NCAA tournament twice. So, naturally, Mr. Bennett deserved a bit of an extension.
However, his contract now looks like that of a lifetime employee of the school or a college coaching legend. The 49-year-old Bennett has signed a new 10-year contract with the school which will keep him as the coach into 2021.
Between Bennett and Gonzaga's Mark Few, the West Coast Conference has turned into one of the best mid-majors in the country and a contender for multiple NCAA tournament bids every single season. The Gaels will return seven key players from last year's team this season, and as a result are major contenders for an NCAA tournament bid once again.
