Missouri Town Demands Kansas Lose Jayhawks Nickname, Stop Existing

Mizzoushirt07_medium

The Border War rivalry between the Kansas Jayhawks and Missouri Tigers: it is frightening. Few other annual, conference battles dredge up references to the American Civil War by both fan bases, and pretty much none of them feature notices like this regarding team nicknames (it also urges the University of Kansas to stop capitalizing its own name):

In a resolution the Osceola Board of Aldermen passed Tuesday - on the eve of the 150th anniversary of a Civil War raid by Kansans that destroyed the town - the city condemned "the celebration of this murderous gang of terrorists by an institution of ‘higher education' in such a brazen and malicious manner."

KU responded to the complaint in typical "uppity" fashion, as predicted by Osceolan Rick Reed:

Star-divide

A Jayhawk is a blue bird with a red head and a big yellow beak that wears boots. It would be hard to confuse it with anyone with terrorist intent, though we admit we have been terrorizing the Tigers on the basketball court for some time. Tigers have been known to kill people. Bears, too.

And all this comes from the part of the Big 12 that doesn't want to split up.

Choose a side, friend. Militant abolitionists should head to Kansas Jayhawks blog Rock Chalk Talk, while Union militia members must rally to Missouri Tigers blog Rock M Nation.
