SEC fans are already in something of a geographical and cultural crisis at the prospect of the Missouri Tigers joining the conference, and then you go and throw this at them, Mizzou fans? Wiping sweat off my brow in relief that you at least didn't try to split the SEC into a North and South.

Florida playing in cold weather?
The possibility of Florida going to missouri in November is intriguing.

Why not split Tennessee and Vandy, and then move Auburn and Alabama to the east. This would preserve most major rivalries and would create better balance in the league. Cross division rivals would change as follows:
Alabama – LSU
Auburn – Ole Miss
Florida – TAM
Miss St – UK
Ark – SC
UGA – Mizzu
Tenn – Vandy
The only rivalry influenced would be FL-LSU which isn’t that old of a rivalry to begin with and Florida would get to renew its rivalry with Auburn which is much older.

One word: no.
As a Tennessee fan, there is literally no alternate universe ever that I would give up the Third Saturday in October to play freaking Vandy every year.

I think Bama and UT would be division rivals in this proposal.

See, this is the problem with looking over SB Nation before class.
Stupidity on my part! Now that I’ve reread his post it’s pretty solid

LSU would love this
The east would be Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, I’ll just stop right there. That’s ridiculous. Meanwhile in the West, only LSU is on the level of the teams mentioned above. The west has MS. St., Ole Miss and Vandy, plus Missouri could also likely be a cellar dwellar with the aforementioned teams. Crazy unbalanced

Look at what the best teams in each respective divisions would be
1)LSU – Bama (push)
2)Auburn – Arkansas (push)
3)MSU – UF (advantage East)
4)TAMU – USC (push)
5)Mizzu – UGA (push)
6)Ole Miss – Tenn (advantage East)
7)Vandy – UK (push)
While this list is totally subjective and would change from year to year I think it illustrates pretty well that this would bring a better level of balance to the league.

You forget...
Don’t forget that Miss State and Arkansas are both top-20 teams that are going to challenge Bama and LSU this year. It isn’t nearly out of the question that Bama finishes fourth in the division this year.
I love this time of year. =)

it changes from year to year
but yet it’s still usually pretty consistent. Auburn has been better than Arky the last 10 years by far (2 undefeated seasons), UGA has been consistently better than Mizzou, and Kentucky is usually bad, but consistently better than Vandy. I agree that TAMU and USC are pushes.

Wrong
LSU-Bama—push
Arkanasas—Auburn—advantage Auburn
MSU-UF—Huge advantage to the east, huge, huge, huge
TAMU—USC—Push
Mizzou—UGA—Huge advantage to the east again
Ole Miss—UT—Big advantage to the east
Vandy-UK-slight advantage east
Florida, Alabama, UT, and Auburn have won 5 national championships since 1998. 4 undefeated seasons. Nevermind UGA.
in the west you have, LSU, they’ve won the SEC a few times, two national championships, zero undefeated seasons, and after that, some solid years from Arky, and uh, not much else. If you think Mizzou will just continue at current pace in the SEC you are big time mistaken. They will be Kentucky.
by AUCub on Sep 8, 2011 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions
No no no
This puts Mizzou in the easy division. The West is much more competitive than the East.
by Pceasy on Sep 8, 2011 3:52 PM EDT reply actions
Cross-divisional rival?
Couldn’t a single, cross-divisional rival game each year fix a lot of these problems?
Assuming Mizzou at 14 for a moment, the natural East-West split would be right through Tennessee and Alabama. Then the cross-divisional rival games could still be Tennessee (East) versus Vandy (West) each year, Bama (West) versus Auburn (East) each year, and so on.

There are already cross division rivals
The UT-Alabama game (which is a very big deal to both schools) would get destroyed by your proposal
