Iowa's Matt Gatens had 33 points to help knock off Wisconsin in Iowa City.
Wisconsin fell behind early and rallied late. But on Thursday, it wasn't enough to overcome Iowa, specifically Hawkeyes sharpshooter Matt Gatens. Gatens had 33 points and propelled the Hawkeyes to a huge 67-66 upset of the No. 16 Badgers in Iowa City.
Gatens got most of his points from behind the arc, going 7-for-10 from deep range, and was especially great in the second half, scoring 15 of Iowa's 24 points in the period and hitting two game-sealing free throws with four seconds remaining. Aaron White added 12 points and six rebounds and Roy Devyn Marble chipped in 11 points, but Gatens accounted for half of Iowa's made field goals on the night and sank 66 percent of his shots.
Wisconsin rallied from a nine-point deficit at halftime to close to within two points in the final minute, and also hit a meaningless three to cut the Hawkeyes' margin of victory to a point, but never led. Ryan Evans and Josh Gasser each had 14 points to lead the Badgers.
