The 2012 Mountain West Tournament Championship Game is set, pitting the two teams many expected to make the final before the tournament began. A three-game losing streak in February threatened to knock the San Diego State Aztecs out of the Top 25. They have since won six straight, and come into Saturday's game ranked No. 18 in the country. The New Mexico Lobos come in just outside of the rankings despite an identical overall and conference record as the Aztecs.
Both teams had to survive tough semifinal matchups to make their way into the Championship game. The Aztecs were blown out by the Colorado State Rams, 77-60, in the first meeting between the two teams during the regular season. They had their revenge on Friday, however. Jamaal Franklin had 19 points and six rebounds as San Diego State advanced with a 79-69 win.
The Lobos found themselves down three points at halftime to the No. 20 UNLV Runnin' Rebels. They survived a back-and-forth second half to pull out a 72-67 win on the Rebels' home court. Drew Gordon led the way with a monstrous double-double: 19 points and 13 rebounds.
