Stay connected with SB Nation

The Northwestern Wildcats barely survived against the Akron Zips, 76-74, in the first round of the 2012 NIT. Only five players scored for Northwestern, with Drew Crawford (27 points), John Shurna (23) and JerShon Cobb (19) accounting for all but seven points.

Northwestern led 42-34 at the half but allowed Akron to claw all the way back. The Zips briefly took a one-point lead with 4:12 left in the game, and they tied the game at 73-73 after Brian Walsh was fouled on a three-pointer and converted all three tries from the line. Shurna responded with a three for Northwestern on the next possession, though, giving Northwestern the lead for good.

Quincy Diggs scored a team-high 18 points with six rebounds off the bench for the Zips. Zeke Marshall added 17 with seven rebounds.
