In what could turn into one of the biggest upsets of the mid-major conference tournament season, the seventh-seeded Northeastern Huskies are tied with the second-seeded Va. Commonwealth Rams, featuring many of the players who were on last year's Final Four team, 26-26 in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.
The Rams were leading by as much as nine in the first half, but the Huskies battled back, largely thanks to the duo of junior Joel Smith, who's scored 12 points, and freshman Quincy Ford, who's grabbed seven rebounds and is Northeastern's second-leading scorer, with five. The Huskies' three-point shooting and defense helped them score the half's final eight points to knot the score.
VCU's young head coach, Shaka Smart, can't be happy with the way his team closed the half. The Rams obviously know how to win big games, but they appeared to lose intensity, especially the starters when they returned off the bench. Treveon Graham, a reserve guard, leads them in scoring with six points, all on three-pointers.
