The favorites didn't pull through in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament, leaving the league looking like it might end up with just one NCAA Tournament team. But the Colorado Buffaloes, who won the tournament with a 53-51 victory over Arizona in the final on Saturday, certainly earned their place in March.
Spencer Dinwiddie tied for the game's scoring lead with 14 points for Colorado, Carlon Brown added 13, and Andre Roberson had 10 points and 11 rebounds while figuring into the Buffs' domination of the boards. CU outrebounded Arizona 35-23.
Arizona got 14 points from Kyle Fogg and 13 points from Solomon Hill, but couldn't make up all the ground it gave up to Colorado, despite finishing on a 13-3 run.
The Buffaloes become the only Pac-12 team assured of a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Regular season champions Washington and California will have to sweat it out on Selection Sunday after early exits in the Pac-12 Tournament.

Though the chatter surrounding the Pac-12 Conference Tournament has centered on how terrible the teams playing in it are, and how the conference champion might be the only team to make the tournament, the Colorado Buffaloes and Airzona Wildcats are playing a pretty good game, scrambling to earn an all-important automatic bid. The Buffaloes are barely ahead, 30-28, at the intermission.
Spencer Dinwiddie was on fire in the first half, scoring nine points and shooting 3-3 from long range to lead Colorado. The Buffaloes dominated the glass in the half, outrebounding the Wildcats 20-11, without which they would probably be down significantly.
The Wildcats are being led by Kyle Fogg, who has 10 points but, incredibly, no rebounds and no assists. Brendon Lavender provided a spark off the bench with two three-pointers, but the Wildcats need to do a better job cleaning up the glass in the second half if they want to win this.

It's not often that you see a big six conference tournament title game featuring two teams playing for their NCAA Tournament lives, but that's exactly what the Pac-12 has with Arizona vs. Colorado on Saturday.
about 1 year ago Update 0 comments
Coming into the Pac-12 Tournament, the Colorado Buffaloes were not considered a serious contender for an NCAA Tournament bid or a Pac-12 Tournament title. Thanks to their three wins in three days, they find themselves in the final, where they will take on the Arizona Wildcats. Like their previous two games, they will be the underdogs.
Colorado defeated their tournament quarterfinal and semifinal opponents -- Oregon and California -- in Boulder in the regular season, but lost to them away. Neutral site games were expected for favor Oregon and Cal, but the Buffs came through in both cases. On Saturday, they face another team in Arizona that they split with in the regular season.
Arizona is playing some of their best basketball of the season at the moment, and they're likely to be a tougher matchup for the Buffs than either Oregon or Cal. Seniors Kyle Fogg and Jesse Perry are coming off of excellent performances, and both were very productive when the teams last met in a big Arizona win in Tuscon. Perry was also excellent for Arizona in Colorado's one-point win in Boulder, and the Buffaloes will need to do a better job of containing him than they did in their previous meetings to pull off a miracle fourth win in four days.
Game Date/Time: Saturday, March 10, 6:00 p.m. ET
TV: CBS

The Colorado Buffaloes have pulled off another great upset. They're into the Pac-12 Tournament final, where they will play their fourth game in four days on Saturday. The California Golden Bears kept it close early, but some fantastic defense and free-throw shooting helped the Buffs to pull away late and seal a 70-59 victory.
Just like they did against their quarterfinal opponent, Oregon, Colorado split home and away with California in the regular season. They weren't expected to beat either team at a neutral site, but have done just that in two straight games. In the final, they play the Arizona Wildcats, another team with whom they played to a home and away split in the regular season.
Four Buffaloes scored in double figures, with Carlon Brown and Andre Roberson both scoring 17 points. The game was never out of reach until late for California, but Colorado iced the game at the line and shot 15-18 from the charity stripe on the night. They were also excellent defensively and held Pac-12 Player of the Year Jorge Gutierrez to 10 points and three assists while forcing him into four turnovers.

It looked like the Oregon State Beavers were on their way to pulling another upset in the Pac-12 Tournament at the end of the first half, but the Arizona Wildcats started the second guns blazing and eventually pulled away. The Beavers took a seven-point lead into the break, but Sean Miller's team went on a 20-3 run to start the second half, eventually coasting to a 70-61 victory.
Devon Collier, Roberto Nelson and Jared Cunningham did plenty on the offensive end for the Beavers, but they got very little help and they struggled as a team defensively in the second half. Arizona's Kyle Fogg had an excellent game, leading all scorers with 22 points. Arizona shot 9-18 from three-point range and did an excellent job of cleaning up on the boards when Oregon State began to miss shots in the second half.
Arizona will play in Saturday's Pac-12 tournament final and they await the winner of the late game between the Colorado Buffaloes and the California Golden Bears.

The surprise of the day came early in the Pac-12 Thursday as the Washington Huskies were knocked off by the Oregon State Beavers in the first game of the day. Washington, whose NCAA Tournament hopes may have went down in flames with Thursday's loss, was heavily favored, and no nine-seed had beaten a top seed in the Pac-12 Tournament before.
In other action, Arizona beat UCLA to end the Bruins' hopes of stealing an auto-bid. California kept its hopes alive with a 77-71 win over rival Stanford. In the late-night action, Colorado put away third-seeded Oregon 63-62, likely ending the Ducks' hopes of sneaking into the NCAA Tournament. In other words, the Pac-12 is looking like a one-bid league, maybe two if it's lucky.
Here is Friday's schedule. For the full tournament website, head over here.

The 2012 Pac-12 Tournament was likely Oregon's last chance to get into the 2012 NCAA Tournament. After Andre Roberson's game-winner got Colorado a 63-62 win over the Ducks on Thursday, those hopes have evaporated.
Visit SI.com's scoreboard for all the scores from the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament
Roberson had 12 points and 10 rebounds and made the go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left to push the Buffaloes past Oregon for good. Colorado's Carlon Brown had 18 points to lead all scorers.
Oregon's Tony Woods had 14 points, and Devoe Joseph added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists. But Joseph was just 6-for-19 on the night, likely dooming Oregon to no better than an NIT berth.

The 2012 Pac-12 Tournament may feature just a couple of teams that ultimately make the 2012 NCAA Tournament field, but second-seeded California rallied in the second half for a 77-71 win over Stanford that keeps the Golden Bears in the running for the Pac-12's automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
Visit SI.com's scoreboard for all the scores from the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament
Jorge Gutierrez had 22 points, seven assists, and six rebounds for Cal, which put up 54 points in the second half and erased a seven-point halftime deficit. All five Cal starters scored in double figures, made at least three shots, and grabbed at least five rebounds.
Stanford's loss came despite Andrew Zimmermann's 22 points and seven rebounds, and ends the Cardinal's chances of making the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

There was no such thing as home court advantage for UCLA on Thursday. Home court advantage belonged to Arizona's Solomon Hill, an LA native, who led his team to a 66-58 win in the second round of the Pac-12 tournament.
Hill scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds in the win. He was not the only Arizona player with a double-double. Jesse Perry scored 16 and had 12 rebounds of his own. Hill and Perry combined to sink 24 of 27 free throws to give Arizona an edge.
Arizona broke a 51-51 tie late in the second half with a 10-2 run. The Bruins made it interesting in the final 90 seconds, scoring five points to close the gap to 62-58. Arizona added four more on free throws to end the game.
Lazeric Jones led the Bruins with 17 points and five assists. Jerime Anderson had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.
UCLA made just two of 12 three-point attempts, compared to five of 15 for Arizona. Solomon Hill hit three of six three-pointers.
On paper, it looks like the Wildcats get a break, facing ninth-seeded Oregon State rather than Washington, the tournament's top seed. Of course, Oregon State is riding high after the upset, so anything can happen on Friday. That game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Pacific on Friday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The Washington Huskies received a bye Wednesday as the No. 1 seed in the 2012 Pacific Life Pac-12 Tournament, enjoying an extra day before taking on the No. 9 Oregon St. Beavers in the quarterfinals Thursday at Staples Center in Los Angeles. But in a game that saw 13 lead changes, the Beavers gave the Huskies all they could handle and more, knocking out the top seed by the score of 86-84.
OSU ran out to a 13-point halftime lead, but UW got back into the game over the first eight minutes of the second half, and the two teams went back and forth down to the final minute. Jared Cunningham cut to the basket with 30 seconds left for an and-one to give the Beavers back the lead. Washington's Tony Wroten got to the line the next time down, but missed both his chances. Cunningham would ice two more with six seconds left, followed by an egregious foul by Austin Seferian-Jenkins on the ensuing inbound that gave the Beavers back the ball.
This is the this first time a No. 9 seed has upset a No. 1 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament.
Oregon State (19-13, 7-11 Pac-12) used a balanced offensive attack as five Beavers finished in double figures, led by Devon Collier's 19 and Cunningham's 18 and 10 rebounds. Joe Burton and Ahmad Starks each added 14 apiece.
Freshman Wroten's 29 points and seven boards would ultimately prove not enough for Washington (21-10, 14-4 Pac-12). Wroten shot 9-of-15 from the stripe. C.J. Wilcox added 16 off the Huskies' bench, while Terrence Ross had 15 points and five rebounds.
The game's full box score can be found here.
Oregon St. now meets the winner of the matchup between the No. 4 seed Arizona Wildcats and the No. 5 UCLA Bruins, set for 5:30 p.m. ET Thursday evening.

The 2012 Pac-12 Tournament continues Thursday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles following a late evening of basketball. It will be another late evening on Thursday with four more games that will stretch into the final minutes of the day on the West Coast (and keep East Coasters up far too late).
The No. 1 Washington Huskies open the day with a contest against the No. 9 Oregon St. Beavers, who defeated the No. 8 Washington St. Cougars on Wednesday night. There probably isn't an upset in the making here -- taking down both high-ranked Washington schools -- but March Madness can always begin a bit earlier than anticipated, right?
Here is the complete schedule for Day 2 of the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament:
Second Round: Thursday, March 8 (All times Eastern)
3:00 p.m.: No. 1 Washington vs. Oregon State (Fox Sports Net)
5:30 p.m.: No. 4 Arizona vs. UCLA (Fox Sports Net)
9:00 p.m.: No. 2 Cal vs. Stanford (Fox Sports Net)
11:30 p.m.: No. 3 Oregon vs. Colorado (Fox Sports Net)

The Oregon State Beavers took out Washington State, 68-61, on Wednesday, despite an off-game from leading scorer Jared Cunningham (four points, 1-for-8 shooting). For their efforts, they earned the right to tip off against the top-seeded Washington Huskies in the second round of the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament.
The Huskies are going for their third consecutive tournament championship. They are the odds-on favorites this season, after going 14-4 through their conference slate. That run included two wins over the Beavers. The Huskies escaped Corvallis with a 75-72 in the last meeting between the two teams. Cunningham had 23 points in the loss. Terrence Ross led the Huskies with 21 points and 13 rebounds in a back-and-forth affair.
Thursday's game will tip off at noon PT, 3:00 p.m. ET. You can watch the game streamed live via the Pac-12 YouTube page.

Despite the appearance of a 12-point victory over the Utah Utes in the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament, the Colorado Buffaloes came away with a sloppy 53-41 win on Wednesday night. It was so bad at one point that both teams had a shot at making history in the first half -- the bad kind of history, that is. They both could have broken the record of fewest points scored in a half during the tournament (16 by the Washington St. Cougars in the later 1980s).
Neither team found any success shooting from the field: Colorado hit just 34.9 percent of its shots and Utah 35.9. Both teams took a large number of three-point shots, hitting 5 of 27. This resulted in 58 total rebounds in the game. Utah also had trouble controlling the ball, committing 18 turnovers to Colorado's nine.
Andre Roberson scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the best performance of the game. Former Ute and current Buffalo Carlon Brown fell two rebounds short of a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds. But outside of that, there isn't much else to talk about.
The Buffaloes play the late game again when they take on the No. 3 Oregon Ducks Thursday night.

The 2012 Pac-12 Tournament is close to ending its Day 1 schedule following the Stanford Cardinal's 85-65 victory over the No. 10 Arizona St. Sun Devils. The Cardinal move on to face the No. 2 California Golden Bears on Thursday night.
The Sun Devils opened the game with a 3-0 lead and it all went downhill from there. The Cardinal just pulled away during the remainder of the first half, ending it with a 50-30 lead. The second half was closer in that neither team won that part of the game -- the score was 35-35 for those 20 minutes.
Chasson Randle was the dominant force for the Cardinal, with 30 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line. Aaron Bright and Jarrett Mann chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, to join Randle in double digits.
Chanse Creekmur led the Sun Devils with 13 points, but the team shot just 40 percent as a whole. They struggled from the free throw line, sinking just 18 of 29 shots.

It's not entirely clear if the UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans are Division I programs, but they still managed to play 40 minutes with an orange ball and two hoops on Wednesday evening. Both teams shot very poorly, but the Trojans were the worse of the two teams in UCLA's 55-40 victory.
USC shot just 28.8 percent from the floor, while UCLA shot 33.9 percent. The Bruins were better in all facets of the game, though that's not saying a whole lot when compared to the No. 12-seeded Trojans, who won just one Pac-12 game this season. UCLA recorded six blocks and seven steals, while winning the rebounding battle 38 to 29.
UCLA advance to face the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday. Arizona might need a win in that game to get to the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

The ninth-seeded Oregon St. Beavers started and finished strong to knock off the No. 8 seed Washington St. Cougars 68-61 in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament on Wednesday.
OSU had four players in double figures, led by Devon Collier's 19 points. The sophomore forward connected on all but one of his eight field goal attempts. Joe Burton came off the bench to chip in 15 points, while Ahmad Starks, who hit four three-pointers in the first half, added 13.
Making the win all the more impressive for Oregon State was the fact that Jared Cunningham, the Pac-12's leading scorer, hit just 1-of-8 shots from the field and scored only four points.
The Beavers now move on to face the top-seeded Washington Huskies Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals. OSU dropped both regular season meetings with the Huskies, most recently falling 75-72 at home on Feb. 12.
Oregon State got off to a sizzling start and raced out to an early 24-8 lead over the Cougars. Washington State answered the bell and responded by shooting 65.4 percent (17-of-26) in the first half to take a 39-38 lead into the locker room.
The teams went back and forth in the second half before Collier and Burton helped the Beavers pull away in the final minutes.
Washington State, which was led in scoring by Brock Motum's 18 points, finished the season at 15-16.

The 2012 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament gets under way on Wednesday afternoon at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The first of two night games will pit the seventh-seeded Stanford Cardinal against the No. 10 seed, the Arizona St. Sun Devils.
The two teams only played each other once during the regular season, where Stanford coasted to an easy 68-44 victory. Stanford finished the regular season 20-10 overall, with a 10-8 record within the Pac-12, while ASU could only manage a 10-20 record, going 6-12 in conference play.
The game will begin at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday and will air on Fox Sports Net.
Whichever team emerges from the game victorious will advance to Thursday's quarterfinals, where they will face off against the No. 2 seed, the California Golden Bears.

The USC Trojans finished their Pac-12 schedule with just one victory out of the 18 games they played, but there's still a chance that they make the Big Dance. It's a long shot, of course, but it all starts on Wednesday afternoon at the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament.
The Trojans will play a team in a different type of turmoil -- thanks to a recent article in Sports Illustrated -- when they matchup with the UCLA Bruins at 5:30 ET in a game scheduled to be televised on the Fox Sports Network.
USC lost to the Bruins both times during the regular season, by a combined 29 points, but they call it March Madness for a reason. If sophomore guard Maurice Jones can somehow lead his team to four straight victories, culminating in Saturday's Pac-12 championship game, USC would clinch an NCAA Tournament berth.
The first step, however, is getting by the Bruins. That won't be an easy task if senior guard Lazeric Jones is feeling it from the field -- as he has been the past couple of games -- but Jones has been anything but consistent this season. Tyler Lamb, along with twins David Wear and Travis Wear, make up the rest of the Bruins offense.

The Washington Huskies are the top seed in the tournament and will be going for their third-straight Pac-12 title. They, along with the California Golden Bears, Oregon Ducks and Arizona Wildcats, will have first-round byes and will be watching eagerly to learn who they each will be playing in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The 2012 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament gets underway on Wednesday afternoon at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The first game in the tournament will be between the eighth-seeded Washington St. Cougars and the No. 9 seed, the Oregon St. Beavers.

The Pac-12 tournament bracket was released over the weekend. The Washington Huskies earned the top seed, but the eight teams that weren't lucky enough to earn a first-round bye will begin their conference tournament schedule on Wednesday.
