Eighth-seeded Maryland cruised to an 82-60 victory over No. 9 seed Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday.
Terrapins star Terrell Stoglin led all scorers with 25 points, while backcourt mate Nick Faust added 19. Sophomore forward Travis McKie led the way for Wake Forest with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
The Demon Deacons actually led the game deep into the first half before Maryland went on a 15-2 run to carry a 36-31 lead into the locker room. The Terrapins quickly extended the lead into double digits after the break, and it stayed there for the duration of the contest.
Maryland, which shot 54.4 percent from the field, dominated virtually all aspects of the game, but none more so than rebounding, where they held a 36-20 advantage.
The reward for Mark Turgeon's team is a date with top-seeded North Carolina in the quarterfinals on Friday. Wake Forest finished the season with a record of 13-17.
Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the game was the fact that the three officials working it had tape on the outside of their sneakers with "KH" written on them in honor of fellow official Karl Hess. Hess was reprimanded by the ACC last month for not following protocol during an incident where ejected former N.C. State players Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from their courtside seats during a game between the Wolfpack and Florida State. Hess was reportedly offered a spot to work the conference tournament, but declined.
