North Texas is expected to name Marquette associate head coach Tony Benford as its next head basketball coach in a press conference later this week, according to CBSSports.com.
Benford spent eight seasons at Arizona State and six at New Mexico before serving as Buzz Williams' top assistant at Marquette for the past four years. Over the course of his coaching career, he has helped guide 14 different teams into the NCAA Tournament.
At North Texas, Benford will replace Johnny Jones, who left earlier this month to become the new head coach at LSU.
The Mean Green went 18-14 last season and were a win away from claiming the Sun Belt Tournament title and advancing to the Big Dance. They are currently projected to be one of the top teams in the conference for 2012-12. Benford's first and most important task in making sure that remains the case will be convincing rising sophomore star Tony Mitchell to stick around for at least one more season. The deadline for Mitchell to declare himself eligible for the NBA Draft is Sunday.
