Michigan State Spartans center Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest for marijuana possession and operating a vehicle with the presence of drugs Monday night.

Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest Monday night for marijuana possession and operating a vehicle with the presence of drugs. Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo released a statement Tuesday explaining his decision to suspend the junior-to-be center.

"Based on the information we have received, Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball team, and his future with our program is uncertain. He made an irresponsible decision that has put his future with our program in serious jeopardy."

Should Nix work his way back into Izzo's good graces, he is expected to be a pivotal player for the Spartans next season. The team loses Big Ten Player of the Year Draymond Green to graduation, creating a major vacuum in the paint. Nix averaged 8.1 points and 3.8 rebounds in 18.9 minutes per game this season.

Nix was still in jail as of noon Tuesday.
