Reigning MAC Coach of the Year Rob Murphy has made the surprising move to accept a scouting position with the Orlando Magic.

Eastern Michigan coach Rob Murphy is leaving the school to take a scouting position with the Orlando Magic. The news was first reported by MLive.com's Graham Couch.

In his first season at Eastern Michigan, Murphy led the Eagles to a MAC West division title and was named the conference's Coach of the Year. EMU finished the 2011-12 season with an overall record of 14-18 and a 9-7 mark in the league.

Aside from the timing, the move is strange in that Murphy has been in college basketball for virtually his entire professional career. Before being hired by EMU he spent seven seasons at Syracuse as an assistant under Jim Boeheim. Prior to that he had worked as an assistant at Kent State and as a high school coach in Detroit.

Just three weeks away from the start of the fall semester, Eastern Michigan is now tasked with the unenviable job of finding its third new basketball coach in three years.
