Expelled Xavier guard Dezmine Wells has announced that he will transfer to Maryland, which will likely seek a waiver that will allow him to play for the Terps immediately.
Former Xavier star Dezmine Wells is taking his game to Maryland. The sophomore guard, who was also considering Oregon and Memphis, among others, made the announcement on Twitter.
"The last couple of weeks have been the toughest time in my life for my family and I," Wells said in the tweet. "After careful consideration with my family, I've decided to attend the University of Maryland."
On Aug. 21, Xavier announced that Wells had been expelled from the univesity due to "a serious violation of the Code of Student Conduct." After careful review of the case, however, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters dismissed the allegations and announced that no charges would be filed against Wells. Deters added that Wells' expulsion was the result of "something seriously flawed" in the university's judicial process
Since it appears possible that Wells was wrongfully expelled at Xavier, Maryland will almost certainly pursue a waiver from the NCAA that would allow Wells to play for the Terps immediately. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
A member of the 2012 Atlantic-10 All-Rookie Team, Wells averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game during his freshman season at Xavier. The 6'5 guard would have been the Musketeers' leading returning scorer and the likely focal point of Chris Mack's offense.
