Sports Network | February 6, 2010

GAME NOTES: The DePaul Blue Demons make their first-ever appearance at Connecticut's Gampel Pavilion to take on the Huskies in Big East Conference play.

DePaul has fared miserably on the road this season, posting an 0-7 mark. The Blue Demons enter this matchup having lost four straight and 10 of their last 11 overall. They kicked off a three-game road trip at Marquette on Wednesday and fell to the Golden Eagles in an 80-69 final.

Perennial national power Connecticut has also fallen on hard times of late, having dropped three straight and six of its last eight games. On Monday, the Huskies were dropped by Louisville, 82-69. However, they do boast a solid 12-2 record in Storrs.

UConn holds a 3-1 edge over DePaul in the all-time series.

DePaul had a rough night offensively at Marquette on Wednesday, shooting 39.3 percent from the floor and only 2-of-16 from beyond the arc. Marquette built a 32-19 halftime lead, then essentially put the game away with a 12-0 run early in the second stanza. To their credit the Blue Demons did not quit, as they dwindled a 26-point deficit down to nine late in regulation, but the damage had already been done. Mac Koshwal paced DePaul with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the loss, while Will Walker scored 13 and Eric Wallace finished with 11 off the bench. On the season, Walker leads the Blue Demons with 16.1 ppg, though he launches more than 15 shots per game on average and is shooting a rather pedestrian 36.9 percent from the floor. Koshwal is averaging a double-double with 13.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest, although the next closest scorer is Mike Stovall at 6.8 ppg.

Four players are averaging double figures for UConn, led by Jerome Dyson with 19.0 ppg. Stanley Robinson is shooting 53.4 percent from the floor and is averaging 16.5 ppg and 7.6 rpg, while Kemba Walker (13.5 ppg) and Gavin Edwards (10.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg) are frequently involved at the offensive end. While UConn has several different guys who can score, they are limited in their range, as the Huskies average only 3.8 threes per game. However, they often play stout defense and have held foes to 38 percent shooting from the floor. But against Louisville on Monday night, UConn shot just 37.5 percent as a team and committed 18 turnovers. Dyson grabbed team-high scoring honors with 18 points, while Walker tallied 15 and Robinson finished with 14 points and 11 boards.

Considering their recent struggles, the Huskies will be glad to face Big East doormat DePaul at home. The Blue Demons' formula of essentially letting Walker launch shots from anywhere on the floor has produced underwhelming results, and that won't get it done tonight in Storrs.
