Recap: Syracuse vs. Cornell

Sports Network | November 24, 2009

Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Brandon Triche ended with 21 points and Andy Rautins hit five three-pointers on his way to an 18-point night, helping No. 10 Syracuse to an 88-73 victory over Cornell at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange (5-0), fresh off their impressive Coaches vs. Cancer title, led by just six points at halftime before using a 16-2 run in the early portion of the second half to pull away.

Wes Johnson filled the stat sheet with 15 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks, while Kris Joseph chipped in 13 points for Syracuse, which went from unranked to No. 10 in the nation after impressive wins over California and North Carolina last week.

"We couldn't win two big games and come here and lose to Cornell," Joseph said. "We couldn't let that happen. That was on our mind as well, just coming out and staying focused."

Cornell (2-2), which has lost 32 straight games against Syracuse, was led by Chris Wroblewski's 20 points. Ryan Wittman logged 19 points in the setback, the club's second straight after road wins at Alabama and UMass.

The Big Red held the Orange scoreless for over a four-minute span just past the midway point of the opening half, and three-pointers from Wroblewski and Geoff Reeves yielded a 25-24 lead.

The hosts scored 10 of the next 13 points to pull ahead, though, and were up 42-36 at the half on Johnson's late bucket.

The lead was still six, 47-41, after Cornell's Jeff Foote hit a layup 3 1/2 minutes in. Syracuse responded with 12 consecutive points, sparked by Triche's make from downtown and three-point play the conventional way.

After a Rautins trey and fourth consecutive Cornell turnover, Rick Jackson made a bucket while being fouled, with his free throw giving Syracuse a healthy 59-41 cushion with 13 1/2 minutes on the clock.

The visitors were able to cut the lead to 13, 63-50, after a Foote dunk near the 11-minute mark, but Syracuse's subsequent 12-2 run, capped by six points from Joseph, proved too big a deficit to overcome.

The Big Red have not defeated Syracuse since the 1968-69 campaign...Foote ended with 12 points and 10 rebounds...Wroblewski made 6-of-12 from three- point land...Jackson had seven points and nine rebounds.
