Sports Network | February 28, 2010

Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Matt Gatens scored a career-high 25 points as he led the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 73-57 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in Big Ten Conference action at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for the Hawkeyes (10-19, 4-12 Big Ten) in their final home game of the season were Aaron Fuller with 17 points and eight boards, followed by Cully Payne with 13 points as he consistently hit free throws down the stretch to keep the team out in front.

The Hoosiers (9-19, 3-12), losers of 10 in a row, were led by Verdell Jones who delivered 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 8- of-8 effort at the free-throw line. Christian Watford tacked on 13 points and a team-high seven boards, followed by Devan Dumes with 11 points off the bench.

Indiana scored a total of just four points through the first 10 minutes of the contest, with the Hawkeyes running out to a 17-4 advantage as they put together a 13-0 run. However, Iowa shot only 1-of-12 behind the three-point line in the frame, which permitted the squad to take only a 32-23 lead at the break.

In the second half, particularly in the final minutes, the Hawkeyes took advantage at the free-throw line, hitting on a total of 21-of-31 in the period, to secure the 16-point win.

More than shooting only 1-of-8 beyond the arc on the evening, Indiana prevented itself from being truly competitive by virtue of 20 turnovers.
