Sports Network | February 13, 2010

Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Lance Goulbourne led a balanced attack with 18 points and nine rebounds, as 22nd-ranked Vanderbilt held on for a 77-69 win over LSU in SEC action at Memorial Gym.

Jermaine Beal contributed 17 points, and Jeffery Taylor went for 15 points before fouling out for Vanderbilt (19-5, 8-2 SEC), which was coming off an impressive 90-71 win over Tennessee on Tuesday. The Commodores, who improved to 13-0 at home this season, have won three of their last four. A.J. Ogilvy converted 8-of-11 free throws and ended with 12 points.

"I think you have to give LSU a lot of credit," Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings said. "They played with a lot of purpose in the tempo of the game. (LSU) played hard and they played well. This wasn't a case of us not being ready to play or this being a letdown. LSU came out at the beginning better able to do what they needed to do."

Tasmin Mitchell led all scorers with 20 points to go along with six rebounds for LSU (9-16, 0-11), which has dropped 11 straight and hasn't tasted victory since an 83-60 decision over McNeese State on January 4. Bo Spencer donated 18 points, and Storm Warren went for 12 before fouling out of the game.

"Eleven times in a row is tough," LSU head coach Trent Johnson said about the losing streak. "I believe they are a good team to challenge whoever is in position to win our league and I also believe they can go deeper in the tournament."

Trailing 29-28 after the opening half, Vanderbilt started the second with a 13-4 run to grab 41-33 lead after a Taylor layup just over five minutes in.

The Commodores held the Tigers at bay for the next several minutes, but LSU was able to get back in the contest on Mitchell's jumper that tied the game at 50-all with 8:18 remaining.

Then, after Garrett Green pulled LSU even at 59-59 with 4:03 to play, Ogilvy responded by making a runner on the next trip that ignited a 9-2 Vanderbilt run. Beal finished off the burst with a three-point play to put the Commodores ahead, 68-61, with 2:04 left on the clock. Vanderbilt was able to go 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the win.

Upset-minded LSU went ahead, 21-16, after a driving layup by Dennis Harris near the midway point of the opening half, and the Tigers kept a five-point advantage, 24-19, with the aide of a Spencer three-pointer with 6:45 remaining.

Beal's layup pulled Vanderbilt even at 24-all with 3:13 left in the half, but LSU held a slim 29-28 edge heading into the locker room.

Vanderbilt has now won the last four meetings and improved to 57-48 in the all-time series over LSU...Harris ended with 10 points for LSU, which shot 43.9 percent from the field and 5-of-16 from three-point territory...The Commodores made 44.4 percent of their shots and 6-of-17 from beyond the arc.
