Former Husky Venoy Overton Pleads Guilty to Promoting Prostitution

Former Washington Basketball guard Venoy Overton has pled guilty to promoting prostitution, according to the Seattle Times.

Overton, 23, was charged in June with the felony after police said he coerced an 18-year-old woman into prostitution. The woman told police she was Overton's girlfriend and said she was required to give him money, and when she couldn't, he told her to work as a prostitute, according to charging papers.

According to the charging documents, Overton offered the woman detailed instructions on how to work as a prostitute. He drove the woman to Pacific Highway South in Kent, told her how to walk, what prices to charge and how many tricks to turn before calling him to pick her up, according to the charges.

Overton pled using the the Alford plea, which essentially acknowledges that though he believes himself to be innocent, he concedes that a jury would likely find him guilty. He was sentenced to 30 days in the King County Jail, but after receiving credit for the 14 days he served before posting $25,000 bail on June 30, and after receiving credit for seven days of "good time" while in jail, and after having the remaining nine days of his sentence was converted to community restitution, it looks like he won't be going to jail.

Former Washington college basketball player Venoy Overton was arrested on Thursday for allegedly "promoting prostitution" in Seattle. He hasn't been charged yet, but DAMN.

A player-turned-pimp? Seriously?

I guess if your name is "Venoy" you have a simple choice. You can either become a bespectacled nerd or... Well, a name like "Venoy" is sort of perfectly creepy for a pimp.

But if nothing else, this news highlights the fine line between "pimpin" and "pimping."

According to a news release, police detectives began their investigation of Overton in May, when undercover officers contacted an 18-year-old woman on Pacific Highway South. Officers learned that she had been brought to the area by her boyfriend, who directed her to perform acts of prostitution, the release said. She identified her boyfriend as Overton, according to police.

Yeah, that sounds like pimping. Not cool. Not at all.

"Pimpin" is what happens when someone wears ridiculous clothes, says absurd things, and has "hoes in different area codes." Pimpin is fun and hilarious, because it's never that serious. Like when somebody puts a spinning rim on a basketball shoe. These right here? SO PIMPED OUT.

But "Venoy" offers a good reminder of what actual pimping is. It's not ridiculous fur coats and spinning rims and general hilarity. It's just some would-be dork with a name like "Venoy" allegedly forcing his girlfriend to perform sex acts in a grimy neighborhood of Seattle. So let it be a lesson going forward. "Pimpin" can always be hilarious... As long as you remember that actual pimping is pretty much the most pathetic profession on earth. Get a job, Venoy.

Washington Basketball Highlight Video A Good Way To Kill 20 Minutes

The end of the college basketball season means it's time for highlight videos and the Washington Huskies have released their 2010-11 version. Calling it extensive would be an understatement as it captures 20 minutes of the best and brightest moments from the season, from non-conference games to the Pac-10 and NCAA tournaments. All your favorite Huskies are there, even little-used human victory cigar Brendan Sherrer.

Isaiah Thomas' cold blooded moment is included, along with video of the Huskies cutting down the nets at Staples Center following the Pac-10 Tournament. Consider it one final send-off for Thomas, who declared for the 2011 NBA Draft and announced he'd be forgoing his senior season at Washington to pursue a career at the next level. Justin Holiday, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Venoy Overton also make a final appearance in the video after exhausting their collegiate eligibility.

And it all ends with the Huskies' own version of One Shining Moment, featuring senior send-offs, NCAA Tournament highlights and a recap of the awards garnered by Washington players this season.

Gonzaga Makes Top-10 In Early 2011-12 College Basketball Rankings

It's never too early to take a look at which teams may cut down the nets in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, and SB Nation's Andy Hutchins did just that, putting together an early set of college basketball rankings. It's a mix of expected contenders -- the Kentucky Wildcats, North Carolina Tar Heels and Ohio State Buckeyes are there -- and sleepers, including one of our own Northwest teams. No, it's not the Washington Huskies, who lose Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Justin Holiday, Venoy Overton and NBA Draft bound junior Isaiah Thomas. Instead, it's a team from Eastern Washington nudging its way into the top-10.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs made SB Nation's early top-10, propelled into the rankings by a core of returning starters. With only Steven Gray gone, Hutchins thinks Gonzaga could be a strong contender next season

The only departure from Spokane is strong shooter Steven Gray. But between seniors-to-be Robert Sacre, Demetri Goodson and Marquis Carter, the Bulldogs have experience to burn, and if Elias Harris can finally put everything together, Gonzaga may have one of the nation's most inimitable talents

It's surprising to see Gonzaga that high, especially after a season of various disappointments. It remains to be seen if Gonzaga can rise to the levels Hutchins predicted in his rankings, but Gonzaga may just be the best team in the state next season.

VIDEO: Isaiah Thomas Buzzer Beater Lifts Washington To Pac-10 Tournament Championship

Isaiah Thomas carried the Washington Huskies through the Pac-10 Tournament and Saturday was no different. With Abdul Gaddy sidelined with an injury and Venoy Overton suspended, the point guard duties rested solely on Thomas, and boy did he deliver. Twice during the Pac-10 Tournament Championship, Thomas saved the game for the Huskies, helping send it into overtime before sealing the win with an impressive buzzer beater.

In regulation, it was Thomas drawing the defense in and finding C.J. Wilcox for the game-tying three-pointer. Then, in overtime, Thomas capped a wild finish with a step-back two-pointer at the buzzer for the win. The Wildcats hit a three on the other end to knot the game with time winding down before Thomas put an end to it all, taking it upon himself on the offensive end.

Thomas was clutch for the Huskies all day, finish with 28 points, five rebounds and seven assists in the Huskies 77-75 overtime win. Washington is assured of an NCAA Tournament bid after winning the Pac-10 Tournament, thanks in large part to Thomas' heroics.

UW Basketball: Suggs Start Against Cal Neither Permanent Nor Something To Read Into

It might have been easy for some people around the web to speculate about why Washington Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar decided to change his starting lineup in Sunday's win against Cal.

Yet he explained to media that the decision to insert Scott Suggs into the lineup and bring Venoy Overton off the bench again was purely strategic.

"Isaiah can hold his own against anyone," said Romar in yesterday's media session. "But in terms of matchups we felt with Jorge Gutierrez, who's an outstanding defender, is usually matched up against Isaiah. And we felt if we went with a bigger lineup, maybe he would defend someone else. And if he didn't, maybe we could take advantage of the person he didn't defend."

Morevoer, the team's depth could mean that it could be a while before Romar decides on a consistent replacement for sophomore Abdul Gaddy, who was lost for the season with a knee injury.

"Who's starting? Who's the sixth man? I don't know," said Romar when pressed further on the matter. "Everybody's in the mix at this point. We have nine scholarship guys that are playing right now. That's not like we have 13. So at nine everyone's in the mix. Certain games are going to call for different substitutions, maybe different starters, depending on what the case is. So, I don't mind - we can answer that every week. I really don't mind. But the answer is not going to change a whole lot because we have different guys that we can go to."

Of course we could speculate about who would be best in that fifth starting spot - Suggs, Venoy Overton, Terrence Ross, and CJ Wilcox have all played well enough at times to fill the spot. But as Romar said, it's still way too early and throughout the season just when one guy seems to step up and look ready for a spot, someone else manages to shine.

"You look back say three weeks ago, four weeks ago, it's probably someone who you said, ‘That's the guy right there,'" said Romar. "Two weeks later, ‘No, no, it's this other guy. So it literally could be any one of them. And I think every one of them have been in that position where you might think that would be the guy, at one time or another, since our first game.

"That's why it's good to haave that because they're all capable."

Overton was great this season as a defensive sparkplug off the bench before Gaddy went out for the season with a knee injury, so there's a pretty strong argument to continue using him as the sixth man. Ross exploded against the Oregon teams, Romar commended Suggs for his defense early, and C.J. Wilcox was excellent at times during non-conference play before hitting something of a slump.

So for now, the carousel will probably continue until someone clearly stands out above the others or shows the versatility to be successful in multiple scenarios.

"There comes a point where you probably go with a guy that fits most scenarios," said Romar when asked about whether there was some point that he'd have to commit to a consistent lineup, such as the Pac-10 or NCAA tournament. "Not maybe the guy that only fits this particular team, but a guy that kinda can hold his own against any different scenario."
