<![endif]-->With most of the country plugging away through finals there isn't a huge update this week. Only a handful of schools are even playing games. Games like last night's 60+ point drubbing that Texas handed out to Texas-Pan American hardly qualify as games anyway. There is not a top 25 matchup until this weekend, but there are some big ones that could allow Purdue to move up. In the meantime, here is what all of our non-conference opponents have been up to since our last update.

Overall out schedule looks much tougher on paper than it did last year. That will only help with seeding. Yes wins over Tennessee and Wake Forest (as opposed to losses to Oklahoma and Duke) look better, but we're getting small boosts from out other opponents as well. Remember, Eastern Michigan, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Detroit were among the worst teams in Division 1 last year. South Dakota State and SIU-Edwardsville may be our worst opponents, but they are better than them. Every little bit helps.

<![endif]-->

Cal State Northridge (4-5, 0-0 Big West) - The Matadors have only played once since last Monday's update, and that was an 89-82 loss at Denver. They do have their first home game in two weeks tonight when they host Drexel. Tuesday they have a chance for a major conference win when they travel to Colorado.

South Dakota State (4-7, 1-1 Summit) - SDSU has been busy since last Monday. They grabbed a non-division 1 win over Southwest State (Minnesota) before dropping games at Nevada and at home against Cal Poly. This is a program that is still going through some growing pains with the move up to Division 1. Keep your eyes peeled next Wednesday night when they have a very interesting game in the Barn against Minnesota.

St. Joseph's (3-6, 0-0 Atlantic 10) - The Hawks continue to be in freefall after the 3-0 start. Losses to Villanova and at Minnesota were brutal. St. Joseph's played no defense at all in giving up 97 points to both teams. The 97-89 loss to Villanova was in a tough Big 5 game and would have been a nice comparison to see how well we matched up with the Wildcats. The Hawks are off until Sunday when they face Lehigh.

Tennessee (8-1, 0-0 SEC) - We continue to be the only blemish on the Volunteers' record. Tennessee notched a neutral court win over Middle Tennessee State in Nashville over the weekend then outlasted a pesky Wyoming team last night. The Cowboys trailed by one at the half before Tennessee pulled away for a 19 point win. The Volunteers will continue an impressive non-conference schedule Saturday when they visit USC in Los Angeles.

Central Michigan (4-5, 0-0 MAC) - Somehow, this didn't make it into Defend That, Digger, but the Chips grabbed a win over a Big East team this weekend. They completed the trip by winning 59-56 at South Florida on Sunday. Digger would argue that the Bulls aren't really in the Big East since they are at the bottom, but screw him. This is a step forward for the Chippewas as they look to improve greatly in MAC play. Their next game is Saturday at fellow opponent South Dakota State.

Wake Forest (6-2, 0-0 ACC) - Wake has had just one game since the last update, but it was an easy 90-50 win over Elon College. They head out on the road tonight by going to a dangerous UNC-Wilmington team that has already upset Penn State this year. The Seahawks will certainly be motivated to face an ACC foe in their gym. Credit to the Demon Deacons for not being afraid to play there, either.

Buffalo (5-3, 0-0 MAC) - The Bulls have won their last two games in a pair of regional rivalry contests. They knocked off Niagara 86-80 on the road before beating non-D1 Buffalo State 93-65. They don't play again until Tuesday, when they face an enigmatic Wisconsin-Green Bay team that has upset Wisconsin, but got drilled by Oakland. That game is at Green Bay.

Valparaiso (4-5, 0-1 Horizon) - The Crusaders snapped a two game losing streak by thrashing Toledo at home 81-49 on Saturday. They have a non-Division 1 game against Concordia (Wisconsin) this Saturday night before trips to IPFW and Akron.

Alabama (6-3, 0-0 SEC) - The Crimson Tide should be able to recover tonight with a relatively easy home game against Samford. I still think this is an NCAA caliber team. None of the three losses are horrible (Cornell is a very good team) and they can rack up a lot of wins in SEC play. The Michigan and Baylor wins have the potential for plenty of mileage as well. They also get another shot at a ranked team Saturday when they host a very hot Kansas State team.

Ball State (3-4, 0-0 MAC) - The Cardinals have split a pair of games since we saw them last. They got some in-state bragging rights with a 68-63 win at Indiana State, but they dropped a game at Tennessee Tech 86-81 in overtime. Remember, this team is still coming out from under a pretty hefty scandal a few years ago. I'll have more on them later this week as we get ready to face them at Conseco. As an added note, I have been approved for a press pass for the Wooden Tradition, so I will likely be running a CoverItLive from inside Conseco on Saturday.

Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (2-8) - The Cougars continue to struggle with their provisional division status. They recently lost a pair of games in the Nashville area to Middle Tennessee State and Lipscomb. They are playing a lot of road game for paychecks this season as a division one independent. They have 15 road games scheduled. Most of their home games are against fellow independent teams.

West Virginia (7-0, 0-0 Big East) - West Virginia grabbed a pair of relatively easy wins over Duquesne and Coppin State to stay undefeated. Each win was by at least 26 points. They face a potentially tricky road game at Cleveland State this weekend, but they have only really been tested by Texas A&M in the 76 Classic so far. Before coming to Purdue they do have a tricky slate of Mississippi, Seton Hall, and Marquette.

<![endif]-->How can you find negatives when we top 100 points for the first time in almost three years? Yes, the following statement probably comes from a bit of an inferiority complex with the ACC and Big East. I don't care. I want to force my brand upon the college basketball world and make people respect us. If they want to see offensive dominance, fine. I give you a 101-65 win over Buffalo. We used defense to build a big early lead, then decided to say, "We can score when we want to, so here is what we can do."

How can you find anything wrong with that. Our "stars" (and you're ddamn right I used quotes when I know everyone has a team-first attitude) put in an effortless 11-12-14 performance? That is the JJ-Robbie-E'Twaun combo for the unintiated.Even out defensive ace Chris Kramer had 14.

<![endif]-->

I saw this game as being a mismatch on paper. Buffalo didn't have many strengths. They could be classified as weak strengths, and event hen they played right into our defense. Their weaknesses could be exploited by a team of our makeup. That is why we have a 36 point win where we topped the century mark and gave four freshman walk-ons at least five minutes of game action.

That is what makes this a very simple game wrap. We did what we neeed to do against a lesser opponent. The game was in doubt for a few minutes, and that was it. Since Boilerdowd had the Corporate Seats as we call them, I was out running errands and didn't get home until about five minutes into the game. That seemed to be the moment where the team decided, "Oh, T-Mill is watching. We can play now." When I turned on my TV they had a one point lead at the second TV timeout. By halftime we were up by 19. It was never in doubt from there.

We played every single player we had on the active roster. Only Stevie Loveless and Kyle Coleman didn't score. It wasn't for lack of effort, either. Loveless had a couple of shots from the field while Coleman got to the line for a pair but couldn't knock one down.

As a sidebar, Coleman reminds me a lot of myself if I had been taller. I saw Coleman play about a dozen times as a compliment to IU's Derek Elston at Tipton in high school. He did a lot of the dirty work inside and played the middle while Elston roamed all over the court. Coleman rarely got the glory, but was rewarded with a walk-on opportunity at Purdue. If I were in his shoes, this would be my reaction: "HOLY SHIT! I GET TO PLAY THE GAME I LOVE IN FRONT OF 14,000 FANS AT MACKEY ARENA!!!"

Can you blame him for missing a pair of meaningless free throws? I know it is my naïve mind, but this is often the scenario I envision for any walk-on. This is what happens when you are a 5'11" white guy from Kokomo with a sketchy jumper and rudimentary ball-handling skills.

I think that best sums up this game wrap. It is a very good thing when we are picking apart the performance of the walk-ons on our team. We all want to be in their position, yet we cannot. In short, we did exactly what we needed to do today. No more, no less. Expect a similar performance later this week against Valpo. The Crusaders have already played some of the top teams in college basketball, so we have a litmus test for what we should expect.

<![endif]-->

I am encouraged by this portion of the schedule. We have passed our early season tests without truly playing well. 3-point shooting was a major issue against Tennessee and Wake forest, yet it did not cost us either game. Now we get a slight break in the next two games. I call it a slight break because we will be favored, yet each opponent presents a set of challenges. Buffalo won 21 games a year ago and was one of the favorites in the MAC tourney. Valparaiso features a pure scorer I couldn't be more proud of in fellow Kokomo Wildkat Brandon Wood.

These are games we should win. There is no question that a loss in either one would be a shocking upset. Still, it is an opportunity to work on some things. We need to find our shooting touch. Patrick Bade needs more game reps to learn how to finish near the basket. Kelsey Barlow needs to continue his development. D.J. Byrd needs to recapture his first game magic. Sandi Marcius needs to shake off the rust if he returns this coming week. It is not all about the freshmen, either. Keaton Grant has been a bit disappointing so far. Ryne Smith and Robbie Hummel aren't shooting as well in the last few games. Buffalo and Valpo present opportunities to work on all of these areas before a tricky road trip to Alabama

Buffalo Bulls

<![endif]-->

This will easily be Buffalo's toughest test on the young season. They have wins over Navy, Towson, and a pretty good Army team. The two losses have come against Vermont (by a point) and Canisius (by two points). That is not exactly a resume that screams at large bid by any stretch. Some of the highlights of last year's campaign were a four point loss to UConn and an 11-5 MAC record. The UConn loss tells me they have the ability to be feisty, but they also lost a game to an awful Evansville team.

Buffalo is not a high scoring team. This should play right into our defensive-minded hands. Their leading socrer (and only player in double figures) is Rodney Pierce at 10.8 ppg. He is a 6'2" senior guard that does most of his work inside the 3-point arc. He is joined in the backcourt by profiicient point guard John Boyer. Boyer is just 6'1", but does a little of everything as evidenced by his 7-5-5 stat line for points, rebounds, and assists. Both of these players are penetrating guards that look to dish off as well. As a team Buffalo averages better than 13 assists per game. That equals out to balanced scoring to offset their lack of size.

Max Boudreau is currently second on the team in scoring, yet he plays just 19.8 minutes per game. He is also a senior at 6'7" and is French Canadian. Let us hope he doesn't let out his frustration of losing the Expos on us. Calvin Betts (8.8ppg, 7.8rpg) is a 6'3" senior that leads the team in rebounding. Titus Robinson (8 ppg, 5.4 rpg) is a 6'7" sophomore that with Boudreau offers the Bulls' only regular size in the post. This is a senior dominated team, but they are not very big. Mitchell Watt and Adekambi Laleye are the biggest players at 6'9". Laleye is a senior that has played sparringly in all five games. Watt averages almost seven points per game, yet is not a strong rebounder.

Buffalo is a relatively deep team. 10 players have played in all five games with nine averaging better than 10 minutes. Zach Filzen and Sean Smiley can be considered 3-point shooting specialists, but as a team the Bulls hit barely a third of their shots from long range. In short, we don't have worry about them getting hot from long range like South Dakota State was capable of. We don't have to worry about being pounded by a bigger team like we did with Wake Forest.

A giant red flag in our favor is turnovers. We force a lot of them. Buffalo has averaged almost 19 per game against much weaker competition. This should be a huge advantage in our favor. Buffalo also does not shoot well from the field (41.6%). As long we can generate normal defensive pressure, nothing above what we usually do, They won't be able to score enough points or generate enough shots to beat us.

This game is a complete mismatch on paper. I simply don't see any way we can lose this game without an absolutely atrocious performance. Buffalo is a senior-laden team with experience, but they don't have a got to scorer to get points when they need them. They don't take care of the basketball. They don't have a dominant post presence to attack our weakness if JJ is in foul trouble. They are not a strong team on the perimeter to shoot over our defense. All this equal a fairly easy non-confernece victory for the good guys. Purdue 78, Buffalo 58

The Can Ball Report gives what can only be described as the only NCAA Canadian player preview that matters. Join us for a look at the Canuck ballers that we expect to be making big waves this season.

So it’s is finally here people! All the waiting is over because the NCAA basketball season will officially start in a few days. There are roughly about 75 Canadians on Division 1 men’s basketball rosters this season and it looks like it will be a good one for our boys. We have two bona fide stars headlining what can be said is the most talented set of Canadian players playing at this level, ever. There are upperclassmen that have earned preseason honors; there are two reigning conference rookies of the year; there are a whole host of preseason all conference selections as well as players who will play major roles to their respective teams’ success. Since we are all basketball enthusiasts (I’ll let you gauge the degree of your enthusiasm in silence now for a moment) the Can Ball Report has compiled a list of players that we feel are worthy of early notice. Now some of you may know a few of the names already, if you do then good for you. For those of you who are not so familiar with them we suggest you, to quote Clinton Sparks, get familiar quickly. The players listed below are guys we feel you'll be hearing a lot about on this site, and any other Canadian media outlet for that matter, from the opening tip to the One Shining Moment in March and we want you to get it here first. So here we go people, the first annual Can Ball Report’s NCAA Canadian Player preview.

Most Outstanding Player – Harouna Mutombo, G - Western Carolina

A consensus pre season Southern Conference First Team selection this season after an incredible Rookie of the Year campaign, Mutombo is poised for a big (ger) year. He led the Catamounts in scoring, rebounding and steals on his way to a Second Team All SoCon nod so I wonder what the encore will be this season.

Top Newcomer – Manny Arop, G - Gonzaga

Arop may not have the best shot nor be the best rebounder as a freshman, but he does everything well enough that he will be an impact player for the Zags from day one. The team will be short on frontcourt help this year so he will be given every opportunity to contribute on a small ball lineup. Of all the newbie Canadians playing this year at the D1 level, Arop should be the best of them come March.

Best Shooter – Andy Rautins, G - Syracuse

Do you really need any explanation here? He is the best deep threat on a perennial national power team. Check his stats. He took 279 threes last year with gunner Eric Devendorf on the team and Rautins made an average of 2.8 makes per game. And that’s high quality defense in his face night in, night out. We don’t need to say anymore.

Best Defender – Andrew Nicholson, F/C – St. Bonaventure

After hitting the weight room this summer, the rookie record setting block machine is back to hold down the lane for the Bonnies. A legit Mutombo-like game changer, teams better rethink the attack when he’s they see his shadow looming.

Best Situation – Chretien Lukusa, G - Binghamton

The scandal that rocked Binghamton earlier this school year sent three starters and three supporting players packing, including two conference first teamers. An accomplished defender, Lukusa is the only returning starter so he pretty much should be good to go on both ends from day one.

Worst Situation – Ryan Wright, F - Oklahoma

The much ballyhooed Wright left UCLA for Oklahoma last year. Now with Blake Griffin in the NBA, the pressure is on him to contribute immediately to a team that has no real experienced frontcourt players returning. This may be a sink or swim situation that could turn against Wright in a hurry.

Most Important to Team – Andrew Nicholson, F/C – St. Bonaventure

Not enough can be said about Nicholson’s importance to his team this year so we’ll only use one word: very. He was the difference between a dead last finish and going .500 last season in the perennially tough A-10 Conference. This year, the team’s success will hinge largely on him and his improvements on both ends of the floor.

Super Sleeper – Willie Galick, F – Cal State-Northridge

Galick has been steadily flying under the radar for most of his college career finally breaking out last season as a junior transfer at Cal State-Northridge. Last year he started 25 of 33 games averaging 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds, both fourth and second respectively on the team. This year, he will get the starting nod at the power forward spot from the beginning of the season for the Matadors and should really shine in the California sun.

Best Down the Road – Manny Arop, G - Gonzaga

Call me crazy but a having great games against the best in the world at your age group should be an indicator of how good you are. Arop showed how good he was in New Zealand at the U19 Worlds this summer. He will have every chance this season to show why he may be the best recruit in the Zags class this year and will only get better with experience.

Due for a Breakout - Rob Sacre, C - Gonzaga

Last season, Rob Sacre was hindered by a foot injury that kept him out of all but five games. After spending the summer working out with the Canadian Senior Men's National Team, the recovered Sacre will be the man in the middle with the departures of Josh Heytvelt and Austin Daye. With Sacre getting the first look at the starting center spot and a lack of real interior players, expect the breakout to come sooner than later.

Redemption Time – Maurice Joseph, G - Vermont

MoJo was another heralded Canadian export from the 2004 high school class along with Wright. He started out at Michigan State and was a big contributor to the team’s Tournament run in ’06 but he decided to transfer to Vermont after his sophmore campaign. Last season amid very high expectations, he began as a starter but finished coming off the bench. This season is the Montreal native’s final year to prove that he was worthy of big expectations when he became a Catamount.

Don’t Call It a Comeback – Olu Ashoalu, G/F – Louisiana Tech

Ashoalu has been on the top end of many school recruiting lists since he was a high school sophomore in Atlanta. He chose to follow the coach that recruited him to Louisiana Tech and got lost in the mix somehow. He was expected to play a big role in the team’s turnaround but red shirted his first year. Last year he showed flashes of what he could do averaging 5.3 ppg and 4.3 rpg playing in all 33 games. This year he will be asked to shoulder more of the load on both ends and should finally begin to play the way many predicted he would at this level.

Remember Me – William Archambault, F - Davidson

If you’re not aware of whom Archambault is you’ll know by the end of this season. With Stephen Curry starting in the NBA and taking with him much of the experienced outside shooting from last year’s team, the sweet shot forward will be the Wildcats’ primary outside gunner. He was the third leading scorer for the team despite starting only nine games and can light it up in a hurry. He is selected as a pre season SoCon All Conference selection, by the coaches no less, so we should all expect a big senior season from Archambault.

Diamond in the Rough - Max Boudreau, F - Buffalo

There seems to be something in the Quebec water that has the province producing seemingly unathletic yet highly efficient basketball players. Max Boudreau can arguably be the most underrated player on any team. He only averaged 13.8 minutes per but quietly put up 6.1 points and 3.3 rebounds playing in all 33 contests. He managed to lead the team in scoring four times and rebounding six times last years, with two of those feats coming in the post season. This year may be the year for him to finally play more and potentially be a starter, finally.

The MAC went through the entire decade of the '00s without earning a single at-large, something they managed to do three times in the 1990s, including the last two years of the decade. The last three seasons pretty much summed up the variety of reasons why.

Last season, the Eastern Division dominated the West. Ohio University ended up as only team in the East that finished with a losing conference record, and their 7-9 mark would have earned them a tie of the Western Division crown. In fact, no team in the West managed to finish with a winning record overall. No MAC team lost fewer than 12 games. Keith Dambrot's Akron Zips managed to earn their first tournament bid, and got a 13 seed and 13-point loss to Gonzaga for their trouble.

In 2007-08, the conference was more balanced between divisions, but Kent State managed to leap way above the rest of the pack. The Golden Flashes won 28 games, claiming victories over St. Mary's, Illinois State, and George Mason, and ended up as a 9 seed in the NCAAs. Had they fallen in the MAC tournament, the league could have very well had two bids. But, in their conference's hour of need, they claimed the title.

In 2006-07, Akron jumped out to 26 wins, but a lack of big wins and a second-place finish to Toledo in the overall MAC race meant they had no chance to get an at-large when Miami knocked them out in the tournament final.

So, the conference needs to hope for more than one dominant team, who can earn some non-conference wins, all while limiting the damage they suffer in the league. Got it? Good. You can read more on the 12 teams who will make up this year's MAC scrum after the jump.

<![endif]-->This is why I love blogging.

When I was watching the World Series the other night, Fox interviewed Cliff Lee after his masterful game one performance. They asked him about what the Phillies thought because, though they were the defending champs, many people were already giving this series to the Yankees. Lee went on to say the usual bland answer of, "Well, we believe in ourselves as a team and blah, blah, blah..." This quote would have impressed me more:

"The last time I checked, we're the defending champs and we're not letting go until you pry it from our cold, dead hands."

The reason I love blogging is that I can say things like that. I know last year at one time I ripped Purdue's women's team for losing to Valparaiso. There was none of this," well Valapariso is a good team and yada, yada, yada..." No. We had no business losing to a team like that and it needed to be said.

That is why I am going to have some fun with this entry. When it comes to the individual team previews close to game time I will return to my fair and balanced statistical analysis. This time, however, it is time for the third and final installment of the overall basketball season preview: a look at the schedule with wins and losses predicted. Remember, these are off the cuff, first impression predictions.

<![endif]-->

11/13 vs. Call State Northridge - W - This is the first of the, "there is no excuse to lose this one" games. The Matadors were an NCAA tournament team a year ago. They lost virtually all of their scoring from a 15 seed. We're playing at home, tipping off the most anticipated basketball season in decades. If we're truly the #7 team in the country that equates to being a 2 seed. Therefore, we need to do what 2 seeds do to 15's.

11/20 vs. South Dakota State (U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam) - W - Another game that should be a win no matter what. The Jackrabbits are a lower tier Summit League team. Those teams do not win games against the top 10. It has the potential to be the biggest blowout of the year.

11/22 vs. Boston College or St. Joseph's (U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam) - W,W - Assuming we play the Eagles in game two of the tournament it will be our first true test of the season. They were our best non-conference victory last year in a 7-point victory that came at Madison Square Garden. They are now a year older and more experienced too. They have enough talent that this is not a mortal lock for a victory on a neutral floor. St. Joseph's was 17-15 last year, but did not get invited to any postseason tournament. That is saying something when Oregon State was 13-17, yet was invited to (and won) the College Basketball Invitational. Expect a tight game here against a pretty good Boston College team.

11/23 vs. DePaul, Northern Iowa, East Carolina, or Tennessee (U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam) - W, W, W, W - Of these four teams I think first Tennessee, then Northern Iowa is likely to meet us in the final. I think both will win their first round games, meaning we would have to lose to SDSU to play DePaul or East Carolina. That won't happen. Northern Iowa fought us hard in the first round of last year's NCAA's, but their two best players in Adam Koch and Jordan Eglseder are gone. Tennessee is probably the favorite to make it to the final, and playing them will be easier than Boston College. Sorry SEC, but you suck at basketball unless you are Kentucky (historically) or Florida (more recently). Both of those programs were down last year. I think I would fear the Tennessee women's program more. And yes, I know they are ranked 11th. I don't care.

We're supposed to take this seriously? Would Matt Painter ever do this?

11/28 vs. Central Michigan - W - A 12-19 MAC has no chance of beating us in Mackey Arena unless we are bored or disinterested. Maybe Dan LeFevour will play and make it a game.

12/1 vs. Wake Forest - W - This is another test against a solid ACC team. Wake is always dangerous in the first half of the season, so we had best be careful. They usually don't fall apart until midway through the ACC season. I give you last year as an example. They started 16-0 and were ranked number one. They lost to Virginia Tech at home, dropped four of their following eight games, then got drilled in round one by... Cleveland State. I know the Vikings are a good team, but that was embarrassing for all major conference basketball teams.

12/5 vs. Buffalo - W - Though this kind of is our Wooden opponent since we moved Ball State to the game at Conseco, the Bulls are a better team. They were 21-12 last year and won the MAC regular season title. We still should win, but it will be closer than people think.

12/9 vs. Valparaiso - W - Mmmmmm, cupcakes. See the same explanation for Central Michigan. I will be excited to see how former Kokomo Wildkat Brandon Wood performs in his closest game to home.

12/12 at Alabama - W - If Alabama is worth anything they will be undefeated prior to this game. They play absolutely no one. We, however, will be battle tested already. This is either a trap game or one in which we exert our will.

12/19 vs. Ball State (Conseco Fieldhouse) - W - I admit, this is not the best game for the Wooden Tradition. We handled Ball State last year at Ball State and two years ago at Mackey. They are getting better, but they are not on the level where they can compete with top 10 teams yet.

12/22 vs. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville - W - Here is how major college basketball teams rank opponents on their level of worry based on name alone:

Toughest: State U.

                        City U. (or College)

                        Directional State U.

                        State (Hyphen) City U.

Easiest: Directional State (Hyphen) City U.

Need I say more?

12/29 at Iowa - W - There shouldn't be an 0-2 conference start this year. Not when we play the consensus worst team in the league to start. Road wins will be difficult in conference play this year. We have to get this easy one.

1/1 vs. West Virginia - W - They are #9 in the preseason poll, so all eyes will be on this one. Another key factor to remember here is that this is a Christmas break game. That means no Paint Crew. You hear me alumni? You had better step up and make Mackey loud on your own. If you don't want to cheer, don't come. Since this is a Big East team Digger will automatically pick the Mountaineers by 25. Since it is New Year's Day we might steal some headlines from the college football world too. This game got a little more interesting as incoming forward Deniz Kilicli was recently suspended for 20 games, including this one.

And you thought Bruce Pearl was poorly dressed.

1/5 vs. Minnesota - W - Just a tough first home game in conference play. I expect every game in the conference this year short of Iowa to be a war. The team that defends its home courts best will win the conference.

1/9 at Wisconsin - W - Can we do the unthinkable and win three straight at the Kohl Center? No Joe Krabbenhoft says yes.

1/12 vs. Ohio State - W - Playing them at Mackey gives me tons of confidence. We took two of three from them last year, dominating the second half in both wins. I like it even better if Robbie is healthy.

1/16 at Northwestern - L - I know what you're thinking. I haven't lost my mind. We could potentially be the #1 team in the country and lose to Northwestern. Think about it though. Basketball is about matchups. Northwestern is a HORRIBLE matchup for us. We didn't handle their trap in either game last year and would have been swept had they not choked the game away in Evanston. Their style of play negates all of our advantages because they want to extend every possession and they play all the passing lanes to disrupt offensive flow. That kills us at both ends of the floor.

1/19 at Illinois - W - This is a dangerous team, but I think we grit one out in Champaign after getting humbled a bit in Evanston.

1/23 vs. Michigan - W - It is all about defending the home court for this game and the next one. That is what the entire Big Ten season will come down to. Did you defend your home court?

1/28 vs. Wisconsin - W - Maybe one of the easier home wins, but that does not mean it is an easy one. Just easier.

1/31 vs. Penn State - W - This isn't the NIT, Nittany Lions.

2/4 at Indiana - W - If we don't win at Indiana this year it will be awhile before we do it again. They will be better, but they are still too young to be taken seriously.

2/9 at Michigan State - L - I am just fine with a split, Mr. Sparty. Let's just do that and decide everything in Indianapolis first at Conseco, then at Lucas Oil. Deal?

2/13 vs. Iowa - W - If we don't win this one we don't deserve to go to the NCAA Tournament, let alone win the Big Ten.

2/17 at Ohio State - W - What is the only Big Ten basketball venue that Purdue has never won in? Value City Arena on the campus of Ohio State. We're due.

2/20-21 vs. Illinois - W - Defend the home court.

2/24 at Minnesota - L - I don't like this game and we're due for a late season stumble. The questions will arise, just before we get home and get ready for a tournament roll.

2/27-28 vs. Michigan State - W - I expect this game to decide the Big Ten regular season title. Anything less would be a shock. I have us with three losses at this point. I think someone will get MSU a couple of times before this game, so they won't be unbeaten in conference.

3/2-3-4 vs. Indiana - W - If we control our own destiny in the Big Ten there is no <expletive deleted> we lose to Indiana on Senior day.

3/6-7 at Penn State - W - If we control our own destiny in the Big Ten there is no <expletive deleted> we lose to Penn State. Not when we lost a close game playing with a six man team there last year (no Kramer or Hummel).

So yeah, I have us going 27-3 and winning at least a share of the Big Ten with a 15-3 conference record. It is a good thing we do not have to go to Michigan. Playing a horrible matchup for us like Northwestern once is also very good. Michigan State has the bad luck of getting Indiana (generally only better than Iowa) just once and they must go to Bloomington for that game. Their other one play team is Ohio State.

What do you readers think? Other predictions?

Coming off the Bulls best season to date, Coach Turner Gill and company hope to prove that it was no fluke in the 2009 season. The Bulls more than exceeded expectations last season, when they beat Ball State to win the MAC championship and earned a trip to the International Bowl. Although they lost to UConn, it was a very successful season for a team that should enter the 2009 campaign with loads of confidence.

Buffalo finished third in the MAC in scoring offense, putting up 32 points per game. They will hope to put up similar numbers this season with new starting quarterback, Zach Maynard. Maynard not only can get it done through the air, but also is very dangerous on the ground. This added dimension of mobility will be a great compliment to James Starks and the running game.

Starks was second on the team last year in receptions and ran for 1,333 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is the most dangerous offensive weapon who can run, catch and score. Naam Roosevelt returns at wide out and will be Maynard’s go to guy this season in the passing game.

Roosevelt averaged over 100 yards receiving last year with 61 receptions. Brett Hamlin will also be returning at receiver, which will be key for this offense. Having the talent at running back and receiver will relieve some of the pressure off of Maynard.

The downside of the offense could be the loss of three starters on the line. Peter Bittner and Andrew West will have to step up, but their jobs will be a little easier with the addition of Maynard’s mobility.

It all starts up front for the defense. Last year, the D-line was the Achilles heel giving up almost 160 yards on the ground per game. With the lack of pressure up front, the Bulls also gave up 245 yards per game through the air. Buffalo did lead the MAC in turnover margin with +10 and they hope to continue that trend in 2009.

The rest of the defense is solid and should be more productive with another year of experience. Justin Winters, Scott Pettigrew and Raphael Akobundu will return at linebacker. Winters compiled 82 total

tackles last season with one sack.

With the lack of productivity up front, the secondary saw a lot of action last season not only in the air, but also on the ground. Safeties Davont Shannon and Domonic Cook combined for 98 total tackles.

For the Bulls to have a shot of repeating as a conference champ, they will need to continue to create turnovers on defense along with putting pressure on the quarterback. It will also be important to keep Maynard healthy and feel comfortable as a starter.

Prediction: 8-4

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay. My, oh my, what a wonderful day. A wonderful day it was yesterday for the Akron Zips, as they collect their first NCAA bid since 1986, winning the MAC Tournament over Buffalo. The 65-53 victory for Akron is some vindication for the loss suffered at the buzzer two years ago in the MAC final.

Akron was led by a guy named "Humpty." Anthony "Humpty" Hitchen's five point explosion in a thirty second span marked the end of Buffalo's chances. Nate Linhart brought home some additional hardware, as he collected Tournament MVP.

We'll see if they can keep whistling "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" after the jump.

Location: Lebron's Ohio hometown, Akron.

Enrollment: 21,635

Record: 23-12 (10-6)

Leading Scorers: Brett McKnight (11.4 ppg), Nate Linhart (10.1 ppg), Chris McKnight (9.2 ppg)

What to know:

Akron was the 5 seed in the MAC tournament and they became the highest seed to ever win the conference championship. Oh did we mention that they just stole another bid.

Aside from Pittsburgh (who beat them like a drum), Akron really hasn't played anyone. This is evident by their 174th strength of schedule.

Akron can get it done defensively, holding opponents to only 59.8 points, good for 19th in the nation. Don't weigh that too much though, see previous bullet point.

Projection: Squeaking into the tournament as a 5 seed in the MAC will undeniably put them in the 14 or 15 seed range. At least they'll get some free stuff for showing up.

Perfect 2-0 in predictions yesterday!

#5 (-2) vs #3
Tipoff: 7 PM CST
TV: ESPN2

My prediction: Zips 65, Bulls 61

Last 2 meetings:

Buffalo 63 @ Akron 61 - In the first meeting of the year, Buffalo only shot 36.7% from the floor, but dominated the boards 32-23 including grabbing 16 on the offensive side to win this game.

Akron 62 @ Buffalo 57 - Akron shot lights out at 52.3% in this late February game on the road. Buffalo was less efficient on the offensive end and couldn't grab enough boards to win this game.

Funny how the lower seeds in this tourney are favored by the point spread AND winning games.

Akron has a small edge on offense and boasts the best defense in the entire MAC.

Here are some key Akron defensive stats that are above and beyond what the Buffalo Bulls have to offer:

55th in Defensive Efficiency (94.1)
35th in Effective FG% Defense (45.4)
3rd in Defensive Turnover % (26.4)

If the Bulls have one advantage in this game, it's dominating the offensive and defensive boards, ranking 25th in the nation in each category. If Buffalo can follow their shots and grab enough offensive boards then they have a very strong chance at winning this game.

Senior Spotlight

Buffalo's Greg Gamble is a 6'4 G/F hybrid that leads the team in assists dishing almost 4 times a game while also placing second on the team with 5.1 rebounds pg.

Akron's Nate Linhart is the 6'8" emotional leader of the Zips. He's second on the team with 10.3 ppg and leads the team in rebounds (6.1 rpg) and steals (1.8 pg)
