Theo Robertson will come off the bench Wednesday against Pacific. Monty didn't say who would start at center and mentioned that MSF needs to get his stamina back.

"He practiced today, looked pretty good," Montgomery said. Asked if that means he’s ready to go, Monty added, "I presume so. I’ll see how he is (Tuesday), but he moved around pretty well. Never really begged out. So I’m hoping he can (play)."

Monty said Jorge Gutierrez likely will start against Pacific, but ultimately will probably come off the bench, allowing Robertson to start and giving the team a versatile player who provides energy as a sub.

"We would go back to the way we were, playing him at the 3, then move him to the 4, depending on if we went small," Montgomery said.

Robertson was averaging 18 points through two games when he injured his right foot before Cal’s games against Syarcuse and Ohio State at Madison Square Garden.

"Theo’s maybe our best shooter and he was playing very well before he got hurt. He’s a smart player," Montgomery said. "We could have really used him against those zones in New York, having a third pure shooter. I would think it will be much harder loading up on Patrick (Christopher) and Jerome (Randle). It should change things drastically."

After the jump, Utah fans look forward to playing Ludwig's offense, Ted Miller looks back at what could have been for Cal (and USC), Miller posts his All-Pac-10 team, basketball gets ready to play Pacific, and more.

Quite a bit of basketball action yesterday, mostly among our non-con opponents — most of whom won, thankfully.

And the Big 12 virtually is assured of winning the Hardwood Series outright for the first time, holding a 6-2 record after Saturday's games and with Kansas scheduled to bash UCLA's brains in this afternoon.

Game results after the jump. Also, be sure to vote in my quick poll. I'm interested in seeing where Wildcat Nation's sentiments lie on this one.

I attached probably the funniest picture of the night. Look at the facial expression from Zhang.... Yeah it was a foul, but he wasn't giving a fuck!

Below are the Four Factors from last night's game. Really tells the story if you weren't able to catch any of it:

NCAA Basketball Stats

Look at the OR%! 47% to 25%! Forget the 25%, the fact that Cal had 47% is crazy good! Combine that with shooting the ball better, and turning it over less times, and that's the recipe for the blowout.

Again, from just looking at the game, rebounding was the obvious issue here, and this chart does a nice job showing the disparity on the boards.

I'm not going to rant anymore about this, and let this ruin my weekend. Today, I'm going to sit back, see teams get selected to Bowls, and watch the Iowa-Iowa State Wrestling dual tonight.

We'll start with the actual team that played with desire yesterday. (As for football, an official bowl announcement will come around 1:30 PM PST, according to Okanes)

The Bears played like a team in must-win mode, and they dominated a solid Iowa State team and their star Craig Brackins. With little error after three road losses against their best opponents, and Pac-10 hoops in general taking a beating, this win was a good step in the right direction for this team and this conference. Cal did not shoot well from downtown (Randle was an uncharacteristic 0 for 7), but didn't need it thanks to timely rebounding, an attack mentality and strong defense, shutting the Cyclones down when they pulled away in the second half.

Player spotlight: This turned out to be the perfect game for (I can't believe it either) Max Zhang. What Zhang lacks on offense he made up for on defense. Although we are far away from anointing him Yao Ming Jr., when he had to face off on the future NBA prospect, Brackins had to work hard to get his 21 points, needing 19 shots to reach that mark. Zhang played close up on him, crowded his range, and forced him into difficult shots when he was on him. Big ups to Max--if he can play like that against Cole Aldrich in a few weeks we have a slight chance of making the noise.

Stars of the night: Omondi Amoke and Patrick Christopher. 25 of Cal's 51 rebounds (and 9 of their 19 offensive boards) came from Amoke and Christopher. Both guys crashed the glass and got 10 points on putbacks. Without any bigs, you love your smaller guys getting in there and putting their effort into it. Amoke was all hustle tonight, cutting baseline and hustling down boards; his performance opened up what could've been a much tighter game.

Great rebound game for Christopher after the disappearing act in Albuquerque. Christopher seemed more ready to attack the basket, and he managed to earn a few trips to the stripe (he missed some of them, but hey, it's better than nothing). For the most part he took open jumpers and 3s, and if he couldn't get them passed to the open man or put it on the floor. With another tough road test at Pacific looming, the Bears might need another big performance from him, especially if Theo's injury continues to hold him out.

(Postgame reaction from Clone Chronicles)

rollonubears went to his first Cal game and shared his thoughts.

Thoughts on Haas:
I need to bring hiking boots next time. Dear lord it is steep.
The atmosphere was very disappointing. The stadium was probably less than half full. Cal fans can show up and be loud (like at football games), so why not do it for basketball? In my opinion a good basketball crowd is more important than a good football crowd. Frustrating.

Thoughts on the game:

PChris sighting! PChris sighting! After being on the lam from playing well for months, good old PChris is back.

Jerome Randle is really, really good at basketball.

I can’t remember Jorge having a better offensive game. He was confident with the ball, made some 3s, used headfakes effectively, and had only 1 turnover. Hopefully he keeps that up.

Dear Max, You are 7 fucking 3. 3 rebounds is unacceptable in 20+ minutes. A guy 9 inches shorter than you grabbed 8 more rebounds. And it isn’t that he isn’t getting bounces. Its that he isn’t trying for the ball. Max frequently just watches the play and doesn’t move to the ball. Quit being so cumbersome and do something! He needs to go to the Omondi Amoke school of sticking your nose in everything. Speaking of him…

I am officially in love with Amoke. He really is Mr. Everything. He is a great natural rebounder (if he was a few inches taller he would be unstoppable), very athletic, a heady player, and always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Amoke’s play thus far has been by far the most positive development of the year.

It's time to readjust the expectations for this team. I thought this was a sure-fire Top 6 team in the Big 12. On paper, I thought they were good enough. But this team is just not physical. They can't take it when they're punched in the mouth. There is absolutely no post offense nor is there good post defense. The rebounding was pathetic, and rebounding is all about desire.

Brackins had 21, Gilstrap had 17, but then nothing else from anyone. Lucca had 0 points, Hamilton with 3, and DG had 6. Our bench only scored 16 points.. Not good enough. Guys couldn't score because they couldn't get open for the most part. They couldn't get open, because they don't fucking MOVE without the ball!

ISU got outrebounded 30-49. Cal had 17 offensive rebounds to ISU's 9 (3-4 of which came in the final seconds of the game). It also helped that Cal shot better, but a lot of that is from getting easy 2nd chance opportunities, along with ISU giving away easy layins inside. Cal could go inside so easliy, it was like no one was there to defend it for ISU.

Cal had emotion and showed that they wanted this one. They fought hard and deservingly won it. For ISU, I never felt like they had that mental edge needed to win the game. When you factor the fact that Cal had their 2nd best player sitting out and the team recovering from the flu, it's pretty disappointing to see them beat us up as badly as they did, considering how beat up they themselves are.

This team has not improved at all this season. If they continue to play this way all season, we'll be lucky to have a winning season and an NIT berth... I don't know what all the answers are at this point, but something needs to happen.

As someone who is ultra-competitive, I have no idea how a team can be apathetic, and just allow for teams to out-hustle you all game. If this team had some heart, motivation, and desire, these 3 losses may not have happened.

I just don't get it. I can't relate to it, and I can't respect that. I just know that what's going out on the court is not good enough. When Pollard fired Morgan he said Men's Basketball ought to be the marquee program at ISU. It certainly is not, and I'm so frustrated right now.

Next up is Iowa on Friday. The thing about Iowa is even though they aren't that good, they play hard. Can't say the same about ISU right now.

We might be in for another long year Cyclone Fans, and it's too bad because this team has a lot of potential.

(To discuss the remaining college football games or the Cal-Washington game, scroll down to the postgame thread. This thread is for the basketball game only!)

Line: Cal by 8
Injuries: Robertson (questionable, gametime decision), MSF, Gutierrez, Amoke (probable, all with flu/cold)

After a tough loss to New Mexico, Cal is fast approaching must-win mode to avoid being in come-from-behind mode for the Pac-10 season. That bid kicks off with a home matchup against Iowa State in the continuing Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood series. Other than an Oregon State win yesterday, the Pac has been shut out, making it very imperative Cal wins tonight to boost the conference's image and their team's ability to beat quality big conference opponents.

This game is on ESPNU, tips off at Haas at 8 PM PST/11 PM EST. After the jump, we interview the Iowa State SBN blog, Clone Chronicles, to discuss tonight's matchup and learn more about Iowa St. basketball.

 1) Tell us about your top players. Who are the Cyclones Cal fans should be worried about?

Our top players are Craig Brackins, Marquis Gilstrap, and Diante Garrett. Brackins is a 2009 Preseaon All-American who was a projected Lottery Pick in 2009, decided to come back to try to get this team to the NCAA Tournament. He's a natural 3, that has to play the 4 and 5 due to a lack of post presence. He has issues against physical players, but has a nice mid-range jumper and fade-away spin move in the post. Gilstrap is a JUCO Transfer who is true wing player in that he is a good rebounder, can score from anywhere, and attacks the hoop. Garrett is the point guard. He isn't a scorer, but great at distributing the ball, and not giving up turnovers. His A/T is 3.31 on the year.... Lucca Staiger played on the German National Team this past summer. He's a 3 point specialist, so he can't be left open.

2) How well is the offense running now? Defense?

Offense is not running well at all. This team plays much better in transition than in half court sets. They are having a tough time against physical defenses, man-to-man defenses. They play much better against the zone. Defensively, they are alright. The post defense isn't great as they've allowed a handful of easy layins, but the perimeter defense is pretty good. They do not pressure too much, so they do not pick up many steals.

3) What are the expectations going into this season for the Cyclones?

The expectations were to get to the NCAA Tournament. With 2 professional prospects in Brackins and Gilstrap, along with some starters becoming upperclassmen, along with being able to go 9-10 deep, anything short of that is a disappointment...So far this season has been disappointing, but the potential is there. This game against Cal is a must-win for the Cyclones... I think some would be ok with a NIT, but most of the top players will likely leave ISU after this year, so 2010-2011 looks to be a rebuilding year. If they do not make the dance, this would be the longest NCAA Tournament drought for ISU since the early 1980s.

4) Tell us something about Iowa State that granola-munching, tree-hugging, flag-burning heathens on the West Coast would probably not know.

Over the past 24 years, they've made the NCAA Tournament 12 times. Jeff Hornacek, Marcus Fizer, Kelvin Cato, and Jamal Tinsley played at Iowa State. Tim Floyd coached here in the mid-1990s prior to coaching the Chicago Bulls. Hilton Coliseum used to be considered one of the toughest places to play in all of College Basketball. The last time it's been truley, floor shaking hostile, was in 2004 or 2005. Winning more will cure that I think.... ISU is mostly an AG school, so of course most students hate everything that Berkeley stands for.

5) As an Iowa State fan, who do you want to punch in the face the most and why?

Not really anyone, but the closest is Roy Williams probably. Every single top recruit from the state of Iowa he has plucked for himself. The latest was #1 Recruit Harrison Barnes who is an Ames, IA native. In the later 1990s into the early 2000s, ISU had a good rivalry going with Kansas with some pretty competitive games, so some of it stems from there.

Tonight at 10pm on ESPNU, ISU will play their annual Big 12/Pac 10 Hardwood Series Game. After playing Oregon State the last two years, I'm excited to be playing against Cal. Make no mistake about this one Cyclone fans. We HAVE to win this game. With non-conference games against Bradley, Houston, and Duke still on the schedule, we have to show that we can beat respectable teams. If we lose to the good teams in the non-conference, how could anyone think we'd do well against the Big 12, potentially the strongest conference this year?

Cal has had a much tougher schedule than ISU. They've lost to both Syracuse and Ohio State. They are coming off a loss against New Mexico as well, but if you look at New Mexico's Sagarin and Pomeroy ratings, they are much better than UNI and Northwestern.

Here's a high level look at the teams:

ISU

Cal

Records

(6-2)

(4-3)

Pomeroy Rank

74

28

Sagarin Rank

54

41

Vegas Line

+8.5

-8.5

Sagarin Line

+6

-6

Now before I go on to the Efficiencies and Four Factors, I wanted to explain a little of what I am doing. I am going to be comparing ISU's performance the last 3 games, first. This is how we've been playing recently, and I think it shows why many are implicitly worried about this matchup tonight:

ISU - Last 3 Games

Cal

Adv

Off Efficiency

1.02 pts/poss.

1.11 pts/poss.

Cal

In short, if we play tonight like we have the last 3 games, we're toast. I think people on here think we've had 2 bad games, but when I'm breaking down Saint Louis, I think we've had 3 bad games.

Again, you have to be cautious when looking at the season totals, due to strength of schedule.

I cannot make a prediction in this one. I just have no clue which ISU team is going to show up. I think it's clear we have to play much better than the past 3 games. If they can play against Cal like they have against the Mississippi Valley State's of the world, then they will win, but let's be real here.

I want to see how this team responds to basically being punked physically by 2 teams. I want to see the Cyclones man-up, and be physical against somebody. Dunk it on somebody, get teed up, do something. This team is missing that "badass" factor.

The first few minutes of the game will dictate this one. If they're motivated, hungry, and physical, I'll be feeling good about this one. If they're flat, and McDermott has his head in his hands, then it's going to be a LONG night.

As a preview for the Cal Game, we did a Q&A with Cal Golden Blogs. I'll do more of a statistical based post later today.

1) Who are the best players on the team?

Well, our best player is senior point guard Jerome Randle. He ain't big, but he's very, very quick, he's got NBA range on his jump shot (and then some), and he's money at the free throw line. He'll get to the line, too, using his quickness to get around defenders and drive into the lane. His biggest weakness has always been his decision-making as point guard, but under Mike Montgomery over the past year+, he's really improved that part of the game. Just about everything you'd want from a senior point guard.

Senior shooting guard Patrick Christopher is also worth mentioning. Getting him back after a brief flirtation with the NBA this past spring was big for the Bears, and while P-Chris (or LeBron James, Jr. -- the resemblance is definitely there) has struggled with consistency -- he's tended to disappear against tough defenders -- when he gets going, dropping 25+ isn't out of the question.

Finally, I should mention power forward Jamal Boykin. Another savvy senior (sensing a trend?), he's not incredibly talented, but has a great ball fake towards the basket and a nice 15-foot jump shoot. Plenty of hustle and guile are his defining characteristics, and even if he's not scoring (probably because he's letting other players shoot), he'll affect the game in dozens of little ways.

2. Your take on the season thus far. Has it been disappointing?

I think for a lot of fans, it has been disappointing. But that is due to the fact that Cal scheduled some VERY hard teams to play. And the losses against those teams have been disappointed. During the Braun era, there was much criticism of the easy early season schedules. About how wed just steamroll a bunch of Directional State Schools and then not be ready for the competition Pac10 play. Now, the Pac10 might be having a down year, but Cal has scheduled some REALLY hard schools. Syracuse. Ohio State. New Mexico. Now Iowa State. And even Kansas (!). So far, against Syracuse, Ohio State, and New Mexico, Cal is 0-3 with varying states of losses ranging from heart-breaking to respectable to national humiliation.

While some might say "Tough Losses To Good Teams Aren't That Bad" most depressed Cal fans are already depressed. In a recent post about whether Cal was already on the bubble, over 40% of poll-responders believe that Cal is either "kind of" or already firmly on the NCAA bubble. Before January.

3. Strengths and Weaknesses of the team.

One of Cal's biggest strength this year (like last year) is their shooting. Cal is really efficient offensively (12th last season, 14th so far this season according to Pomeroy); they look for their shots, they're patient in their selection, and they eventually get good looks at the basket. Not much has changed from last season; many of our starters like Randle, Robertson and Boykin also seem to have improved offensively in their various games (Boykin with his post moves, Randle with his dribble-drive, Robertson with savvy 3s).

They're also a very good passing team. Randle, Jorge Gutierrez, Christopher, Boykin, even true frosh Brandon Smith, all are pretty good at handling the ball, keep the ball moving and make sure players get good looks. The shots haven't been falling as well as last year, but hopefully with time it'll get easier.

Its biggest weakness is its inability to break down good zone defenses. The Bears have either been very tentative at attacking good defensive squads, and sort of settle for jump shots. Right now we're really missing Theo Robertson. Although everyone's improved offensively, Theo's absence due to a foot injury has hurt us against bigger competition. They can zone in on Randle and Christopher, and the Bears really don't have anyone that talented offensively behind them that can get the role players better looks, leaving them with jump shots they're not as comfortable with shooting or drives that don't have enough finish to them.

It isn't helped by our lack of good bigs that can get inside and get easy points. Markhuri Sanders-Frison and Max Zhang feel like they could post and seem to be pretty aggressive, but they're both kind of a mess offensively and can be exploited defensively (Sanders-Frison seems to get 2 fouls in almost every game in the first three minutes). Harper Kamp, our primary big backup last season, could be redshirting this season recovering from a knee injury. That means heavy minutes for Boykin, who has played very well but isn't big enough to contend with true centers.

4) Your take on the Pac 10. Preseason the perception is that it is the worst "BCS" conference

Well, it is certainly tough to maintain your skill level when your league is in the NBA Draft green room each year. To quote Ragnarok, who answered this question previously:

"Actually, Ken Pomeroy rated the Pac-10 as the #1 conference last year (despite no elite teams, 90% of the league went to the postseason), and #2 the year before that. Heck, the league did produce 13 NBA first-round picks over the past two seasons, 9 of them in the lottery. Just because we play past your bedtime doesn't mean we're not any good out here.

That said, this year looks to be a down year for the Pac-10. All those NBA draft picks have come at a price, leaving the league relatively bereft of talent. While I'm sure at least one team in the league will surprise, right now it looks like the league title will come down to Cal and Washington. Out West, there's always the worry over UCLA as a lurking juggernaut, but the Bruins lost a lot of talent since last year, and just this week lost to Cal State Fullerton at home; not an auspicious beginning. While I might favor the Huskies some, finishing between second and fourth in the Pac-10 has historically been plenty to get into the tournament.

As for the non-conference schedule, it definitely has some teeth to it. I think Cal would do well with even a split in New York, and our game at Kansas is basically a no-lose proposition. This is a senior-heavy squad that shouldn't slip up against lesser competition, and if they can beat Craig Brackins and Iowa State, I should think they'll have no problems with the NCAA Tournament committee this season."

5) Anything you want to add about the team, university, or what fans should expect to see.

First of all, get prepared for some awkward camera angles. Haas has the camera placed up in orbit, so it sort of looks like you're getting the view from purgatory (not quite God's view). Hopefully you guys don't get too disoriented watching.

Cal is currently experiencing a mini-activist renaissance due to student fee hikes. (I'm not sure how many of these activists even go to our school, but I do know it's tough) So right now we're starting to worry we're on the verge of becoming a mini-Stanford, i.e. everything we despise and stand against. Not the happiest times on the college side of the Berk. Surprisingly our athletics might be on the verge of self-sufficiency, which has academics grumbling. Good feelings all around!
