Get Well, Coach Lick. Todd Lickliter was released from University Hospitals yesterday, and discussed his condition with Gary Dolphin during last night's pregame show:

Lickliter, 54, suffered a tear in his carotid artery and the stent was inserted Saturday. The carotid artery supplies the head and neck with oxygenated blood and any disruption in the artery causes headaches and could lead to a stroke, according to medical Web sites....

"I was having headaches when we were in Kansas City (for a tournament)," Lickliter said in an interview on Iowa’s pre-game radio show. "It turned out to be the beginning of a tear in (the) carotid artery. I’m thankful for the thoroughness of the medical staff, very thankful for that. They ran all the scans, they made sure of the diagnosis, then made a decision on what to do. It was not an easy decision; it was very stressful."

We had heard rumors of migraine headaches and undisclosed medical procedures, but I don't think anyone knew it was anything approaching this level of seriousness. Not being medical professionals, we're not going to speculate on the cause of this or its long-term effects; we're just happy to hear that Coach Lick is out of the hospital and improving. He is expected to return to the bench for Friday night's game with Iowa State.

About Last Night. Northern Iowa effectively won the state championship last night with a 67-50 beatdown of the Hawkeyes before a raucous near-sellout crowd. Panther guard/Impossible Wheel of Fortune answer Kwadzo Ahelegbe led the way with 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. The game was never really in doubt after Iowa went into its patented "let's not score for a really long stretch of time" offense, allowing UNI to go on a 22-1 run over a nine-minute stretch of the first half that gave the Panthers a 24-7 lead. Iowa briefly pulled within six early in the second half, but the damage had been done. Northern Iowa converted 15 Iowa turnovers(!) into 31points(!!), as opposed to Iowa's 3 points off 5 Panther turnovers. Iowa got to the foul line a paltry eight times, and made just three of those free throws. And that says nothing for the fact that UNI sold their place out in a blizzard and Iowa City's local networks would rather show fat people in spandex. What I'm saying is this was an unmitigated disaster.

At least Andrew Brommer remains on pace for the most fouls per minute of any player in team history, committing four infractions in 12 minutes. That is nine fouls in his last 22 minutes of game action, which is more carnage than Saw VI. This has already become the season's best storyline.

Brewster, You Got That Crazy Look in Your Eye! Things are getting downright weird in the Great White North, where Ol' WIN FIGHT TRY himself, Tim Brewster, is wrapping up his third season on a five-year contract with Minnesota. He's angling for an extension, but Minnesota AD Joel Maturi -- whose apparent hatred for his head football coach becomes more obvious with each passing day -- has said there will be no discussion of a contract extension until after Minnesota's bowl game.

It wouldn't be such a problem, except recruits are jumping off this sinking ship in droves. Earlier this week, 4-star running back Josh Huff and 3-star cornerback Antoine Lewis both decommitted from Minnesota, citing Brewster's status as one of their reasons. Lewis, who is now committed to Purdue, made comments that were particularly damning of WIN FIGHT TRY BEST GOPHER ROSE BOWL GOPHER:

"I have respect for every program, every individual who (recruited me)," Lewis said Sunday night. "It wasn’t necessarily about switching commitments. It was about making the right decision for me.

"Purdue was a very family-like environment and the coaches seemed very genuine and the players acted the same way around the coaches and away from the coaches. … I knew what I was going to do before I left."

The wholesale decommitment of the heart of Brewster's 2010 class would usually be enough, but Joel Maturi has apparently been hearing rumors about Kansas potentially hiring Brewster to replace Mark Mangino. To his credit, Maturi --who is one of the country's sharpest AD's when he's not searching for a football coach -- clearly sees what this really is: an attempt by Brewster and his people to extort a contract extension out of Minnesota with the threat of his departure. In fact, there is only one scenario in which this rumor is true, that being an Alford-esque golden parachute out of a situation that has obviously become toxic for all parties. Fortunately for all of us who enjoy college football soap operas, Maturi isn't afraid to call a bluff. Also, just to remind you, he clearly hates Brewster:

"There are rumors that he's going to Kansas, so I don't know," Maturi said Tuesday. "What can I say? So I can't guarantee it, no. I can't guarantee the decisions of other people...."

"I'm smart enough to know that (Brewster's) not going to tell me, nor is the athletic director (Lew Perkins) at Kansas going to tell me until it's a done deal," Maturi said, adding that Kansas had not contacted him. "I chatted with (Brewster) about it very, very briefly. I told him I'm getting tired of all of these Kansas calls. That's kind of been my conversations with him. I know how the game is played. I know how it is. I'm respectful of that. I'm not going to believe the rumors until they're fact. I'm not going to knee-jerk react one way or the other because of it."

Barring a quick termination for concocting a fake rumor in an attempt to get a pay raise, we still have two more years of this. I know, I can't wait either.

Foot's Notes:

It's award season: Michigan DE Brandon Graham and Penn State QB Darryl Clark split the Silver Football, given to Big Ten Player of the Year. It's the first time the vote was tied in the 86-year history of the award. Wisconsin RB John Clay took third.

ESPN.com released their all-conference selections: Bulaga and Richardson on the offense; Clayborn, Angerer, and Sash on defense. The only semi-egregious omission is Amari Spievey, who was omitted in favor of Northwestern's Sherrick McManis in what looks like a "we need a Northwestern guy" decision. Otherwise, I can't complain.

Ndomukong Suh, who could well win the Heisman, beats out Pat Angerer for the Bronco Nagurski Award, given to the country's best defensive player.

Adam Rittenberg interviews Big Ten commissioner and BCS defender emeritus Jim Delaney. His reaction to those complaining about the TCU-Boise Fiesta Bowl matchup? Essentially, go fuck yourselves.

The majority of our opponents, both past and future, were in action last night — including our three opponents from Puerto Rico, three of our four immediately upcoming opponents and seven of the Big 12 teams.

And what a crazy night it was. There were overtime games, upsets, the Big Ten winning the Challenge against the ACC (one of the signs of the impending apocalypse), you name it.

To see how everyone fared, click the jump.

UNI vs. ISU Stats

Below you will see the Four Factors to Winning from tonights game, and see that ISU only had the edge in one of the factors. Had UNI been shooting better, we may have been blown out in this one.

NCAA Basketball Stats

Anyhow, I thought I'd point out some other stats that were interesting:

ISU only scored 3 points in the final 6:05 of the game. UNI scored 11.

UNI had 15 offensive rebounds! 15! Obviously you see the superior OR% above, but 15 is a lot for a team that's playing a slower tempo

ISU and UNI had an equal number of possessions this game (62). UNI was able to put up 9 more shots than ISU, however.

That's pretty much it. Still pretty bummed about this loss. Last year Brackins was able to score 32 against UNI, while Egelseder and Koch only scored 25 combined. This year, Egelseder and Koch score 20 each, while Brackins was held to 13 points.

If you look at the Four Factors from last year, you will see that we shot the ball better than them, but also did a better job with offensive rebounding and getting to the line than them:

NCAA Basketball Stats

And that's the part that's really frustrating me. This year, we have better rebounders, and we have more bodies to go inside with, yet somehow UNI is better than us at offensive rebounding, and getting to the line?

It's all a little boggling for me still, but that's the way it goes. I'm going to get to sleep, and hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow morning.

Tonight was another throwback game... To the days of the last 3 years... Oh wait, that's not throwback, that's just continuing what you've been doing all along.

Props to UNI in this one. They played another solid game. What ISU has been showing all year is that if they're challenging physically, they will bow down. Honestly, I felt like UNI beat us the whole game. They had a lot of open looks within 5 feet of the basket that rimmed out, especially Egelseder. I really felt fortunate that ISU had the lead going into the half, because it felt like we were losing.

And that's really the story of the game. Had we edged it out at the end, it still would've felt like a loss. My big problem with this team, is that there's a lack of identity. What are we? If we're a transition team, then we can't be so sloppy. If we're a half-court tempo offense, that's trying to work inside-out, then we need to have guys move around more when they don't have the ball.

When we're in the half-court offense, here's what happens. DG dribbles at the top of the lane. Lucca stands around in the corner. Brackins tries to establish post position, Gilstrap hangs out on the wing, with Hamilton running around trying to set high post screens. There needs to be more than that. What happened today was that UNI defended the perimeter well, along with the post defense doing a good job against Brackins. I feel like Gilstrap is the only one that gets that you need to attack the opponents. The problem is that he's been kind of sloppy off the dribble and given up some turnovers that have led to some transition buckets.

Our defense for the most part is OK. In the 2nd half, we UNI did get too many offensive rebounds, but generally we're doing OK in that department. We've given up some easy baskets, and could improve for sure, but it isn't our biggest weakness. If you are holding your opponents to the mid-60s or so, that's pretty good.

What's bothering me the most, is we have a team full of guys that can score, not doing so. Like I've said before, there's no identity to this team. Greg needs to address the team, tell them what they're going to do, and then execute. Down the stretch we don't run plays; we just dribble around and jack up shots with guys in our face. When I look at the guys, they don't look like they know what they are doing. Some of that has to fall on the coaching staff.

Last year, we complained there was a lack of weapons, so we couldn't really play that good of an offense. Now we have 2-3 more scorers than last year, and still isn't enough. When for the past 3+ years, I've seen an Iowa State team, regardless of the combination of players out on the court, continue to blow it down the stretch, it's clear to me that the coaching staff isn't getting the job done.

It doesn't get easier now for the Cyclones. They are going to get on a plane, and head west to play against Pac-10 Champion Favorite, Cal. We're learning a lot about our team, and we have a long way to go. If we were more offensive minded, I think we'd be successful.

I was optimistic about this team. I really thought we'd be good enough to finish in the top half of the conference, but we're not looking like that kind of a team. At the same time, all is not lost. This team can get there, but more organization has to be done from the coaches, and players need to improve big time.

Tonight, UNI comes to town, and we better stomp 'em. It's not going to be easy though. As you probably know, UNI is the favorite to win the Missouri Valley Conference this year.

If you recall, we played a tough game up there against them last year at their place where we won in overtime. Pretty much their whole team is back, so you know they're going to be motivated to try to return the favor this year.

If you can't make it to Hilton, it should be on Mediacom Connections in Central Iowa, and also on ESPN360 and ESPN Fullcourt.

Here's a statistical comparison of how the teams stack up:

19.8%

16.8%

31.7%

46.6%

UNI

I think this game comes down to 3 point shooting. Both teams average about 17 3 point attempts per game. ISU's hitting at a higher percentage than UNI on the year (49.6% vs. 34.8%), but for just 1 game, anything can happen. I'd love to see Brackins and Gilstrap take it strong inside and have ISU not rely on the 3 point shot, but with the way Lucca, Christopherson, and JVB have been shooting the 3, if they're wide open they gotta take those shots.

As far as players to watch, Ahelegbe, Koch, Eglseder, and Farokhmanesh are all back again this year, and they represent almost 80% of UNI's scoring. Other than Ahelegbe, the other three are Seniors, so this is the last time we will see these guys play against us.

I'm really looking forward to the game tonight. Should be a lot of fun, and hopefully we pick up a W before we head out West. I'm hoping for a respectible crowd as this is going to be a good game between two solid teams.

December Outlook For The Cyclones

Now that it's December 1st, I thought I would post a quick outlook on our opponents for this month. It might be hard to believe but the Cyclones only have 5 games this month, as they have close to a 2 week layoff between games from the end of December and the beginning of January.

Below is a list of each team the Cyclones are playing, along with what Sagarin's Predictive Model says is the winner and by what scoring margin. This is from data as of the end of November, and it's updated everyday. Prior to each game, we will take another look at this as it will change, along with looking at other stats as well.

Date

Opponent

Sagarin Prediction

12/2

UNI

ISU W by 9-10

12/5

@ Cal

Cal W by 5

12/11

Iowa

ISU W by 17

12/20

Bradley

ISU W by 11

12/22

North Dakota

ISU W by 30

Based on these results on what we know now, we should expect to go 4-1 this month, having an overall record of 10-2. Now, we're very close with Cal, as the home team gets 4 additional points, so there's a possible chance to win that game as well. If this game was at Hilton, it'd be a dead even choice by Sagarin.

I would like to see ISU overacheive slightly and go 5-0 this month. It sure is possible, as long as they play hard. It's just a good thing that they have this many home games next month.

Looking forward to the December games, and tonight I will post a more proper preview of UNI.

How about that Purdue-Tennessee game? Those two teams looked like top ten teams, and it was definitely a physical game to say the least. I'm excited to go more into Purdue's team as we look forward to next week's showdown in West Lafayette. As to the ACC, teams went 4-1 with the only loss being BC at the hands of Northern Iowa.

Boston College 69, Northern Iowa 81
UNI got a spectacular game from Kwadzo Ahelegbe, who was 14-17 from the floor, scoring 32 and adding 4 assists and 2 rebounds. Any time a guy goes 14-17 it's usually a combination of poor defense and the player just straight balling. UNI shot 65% as a team and 5-9 from deep. They also had just 5 turnovers on the day. That's usually a recipe for success. Corey Raji led BC with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Josh Southern and Joe Trapani added a combined 23 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

Virginia Tech 71, Campbell 60
The Fighting Camels sure lived up to their name yesterday. Virginia Tech usually has a couple games like this (3 point win over Gardner-Webb last year, loss to Seton Hall), so it was good to see them get back under control and finish the game. J.T. Thompson set a career high with 17 points, while Malcolm Delaney added 15 on just 3-13 shooting.

UNC 93, Gardner-Webb 72
This game was a lot closer than the final score indicated. Gardner-Webb really hung in there. And once again, it was a combination of poor defense and turnovers that were stinging the Heels. Gardner-Webb hit 15 of 36 threes on the day, but a lot of those misses came near the end of the game when they were in desperation mode.

Deon Thompson is quickly becoming an All-ACC candidate and had another big night--22 and 10 on 9-10 shooting. Tyler Zeller and Ed Davis combined for 31 points and 18 rebounds, while highly-touted freshman John Henson continued to struggle with his production (Just 2 points on 1-3 shooting in 13 minutes).

Clemson 102, Winthrop 66
Now Clemson is doing it right so far. They are winning by an average of 35 points in their 4 wins. They're playing cupcakes like a lot of other teams, but they are just straight dusting people. Clemson had 6 players in double figures--Jerai Grant, David Potter, Tanner Smith, Andre Young, Noel Johnson and Trevor Booker--and 10 players played double-digit minutes. This is the way to see what you have on your bench and keep your starters fresh.

Maryland 79, Chaminade 51
Maryland looked shaky early on and it could be a combination of the trip to Hawaii or the fact that Chaminade really tries to get up for these games, but the Terrapins were able to take the lead with 7 minutes left in the first half and run with it. Sean Mosley led all scorers with 19 points and had 8 rebounds. Greivis Vasquez continues to struggle with his shot (2-7), as he is just 28.6% in the early goings.

Well, if you're Luke Babbitt, you stay close to home and go to Nevada. After initially committing to play for Thad Matta, Babbitt got cold feet and decided he wanted to remain near his parents. He's a pro prospect, but playing in a lesser conference seems to put more pressure on the sophomore, who will be expected to be great for the entire season, turn his "Freshman of the Year" award into "Player of the Year" and build upon his 17/7.3/1.3 stat line.

Marqus Blakely; Senior, Vermont - OK let's get this out of the way...America East is one of the least basketball-centric conferences in the country, so when a player catches our eye, he must be impressive. Blakely is a two-time American East player of the year and is going to have quite a burden on his shoulders, as the Catamounts graduated 35 percent of their scoring and it's all time assists leader Miki Trimboli. But at 6'5" 235, Blakely is an explosive scoring threat, and a feared shot blocker who probably will lead his team in all major categories.

Osiris Eldridge; Senior, Illinois State - Finishing a close third to Siena's Just-in'love Smith and Cal's Bak Bak, Eldridge holds claim to one of the baddest names in the college game. Last season ended on a sour note for Eldridge, as he missed a three pointer that would have forced a second overtime against Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Tourney Final. Expect the Redbirds to be matched-up against the Panthers once again when the precious NCAA Tournament berth is on the line. Also please take note of his nicely maintained Euro-hawk.

Kenneth Faried; Junior, Morehead State - Quick, who was second in the NCAA last season in double-doubles? No idiot, it wasn't Eric Devendorf, this title belongs to Faried, a New Jersey native who migrated to eastern Kentucky to serve as one of the most imposing players in Ohio Valley Conference. This guy probably plays harder, meaner and faster than any of his opponents, and just may be the country's most prolific rebounder by the end of this season.

Paul George; Sophomore, Fresno State - Come March, George's time as 'just a nice mid-major player' will likely be long gone. After a surprise freshman season (averaging 14 and 6) George often executes foolish dunks, strokes at a 45 percent clip from behind the arc, and is a legit NBA prospect drawing comparisons to Rudy Gay. Yeah, many BCS-schools are kicking themselves for missing this one.

Anthony Johnson; Senior, Montana - In his first season playing DI basketball as a JuCo transfer, Johnson lit up the Big Sky last year putting up scoring numbers not seen by the conference since Rodney Stuckey was killin it at Eastern Washington. Johnson is the reigning conference POY and as a 6'3" wing player, is very efficient . He shoots at 50 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from long range.

Johnathan Jones; Senior, Oakland - Last season's NCAA leader in assists, Jones dropped double-digit dimes (now there's some alliteration) in nine of the Grizzlies last 12 games. Starting every game since he's been on campus, and the only player to ever chalk up 1000 points and 500 assists in a career, Jones has already earned the title as the program's most decorated player. And with that darling Ben Woodside of North Dakota State moving on, Oakland is the favorite to win the Summit league as Jones will enjoy dishing out to three other returning starters all season long.

Larry Sanders; Junior, Virginia Commonwealth - No Eric Maynor, no Anthony Grant, no problem! The 6'10" junior who shares the same name as Gary Shandling's hit HBO show is still here! Sanders has a freakish 91 inch wingspan, and was 11th in the country last season in blocks. While it's quite rare in college basketball, Sanders will be a triple-double threat this season if CAA players repeatedly try and shoot over this guy. NBA scouts like him, but will love him if he develops are more consistent offensive game this season. Nonetheless, first year coach Shaka Smith has a real asset in his frontcourt.

A.J. Slaughter; Senior, Western Kentucky - He's still eligible? That's right, after two years of playing along side Courtney Lee, Tyrone Brazelton and Orlando Mendez-Valdez, Slaughter is still kicking around and arguably the top player in the Sun Belt. Along with Steffphon Pettigrew, Slaughter will lead a team that returns four starters and itching to get back to the dance after being on the wrong side of one of last season's plays of the year.

Edwin Ubiles; Senior, Siena - For what it's worth, Edwin Ubiles has won more NCAA Tournament games than recent college basketball notables Nick Calathes, Eric Gordon, and Greg Monroe combined. After a dramatic victory over Ohio State last season, Siena comes in this season as the trendy mid-major looking to be a Top 25 mainstay this season- and Ubiles will be the man to lead them. Georgia Tech aside, the Saints schedule is pretty benign, so the selection committee will leave little wiggle room for this program to be an at-large bid candidate. Ubiles' athleticism is on par with the top players in the country, and if he develops any sort of outside game he could be an NBA draft pick.

<![endif]-->This is why I love blogging.

When I was watching the World Series the other night, Fox interviewed Cliff Lee after his masterful game one performance. They asked him about what the Phillies thought because, though they were the defending champs, many people were already giving this series to the Yankees. Lee went on to say the usual bland answer of, "Well, we believe in ourselves as a team and blah, blah, blah..." This quote would have impressed me more:

"The last time I checked, we're the defending champs and we're not letting go until you pry it from our cold, dead hands."

The reason I love blogging is that I can say things like that. I know last year at one time I ripped Purdue's women's team for losing to Valparaiso. There was none of this," well Valapariso is a good team and yada, yada, yada..." No. We had no business losing to a team like that and it needed to be said.

That is why I am going to have some fun with this entry. When it comes to the individual team previews close to game time I will return to my fair and balanced statistical analysis. This time, however, it is time for the third and final installment of the overall basketball season preview: a look at the schedule with wins and losses predicted. Remember, these are off the cuff, first impression predictions.

<![endif]-->

11/13 vs. Call State Northridge - W - This is the first of the, "there is no excuse to lose this one" games. The Matadors were an NCAA tournament team a year ago. They lost virtually all of their scoring from a 15 seed. We're playing at home, tipping off the most anticipated basketball season in decades. If we're truly the #7 team in the country that equates to being a 2 seed. Therefore, we need to do what 2 seeds do to 15's.

11/20 vs. South Dakota State (U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam) - W - Another game that should be a win no matter what. The Jackrabbits are a lower tier Summit League team. Those teams do not win games against the top 10. It has the potential to be the biggest blowout of the year.

11/22 vs. Boston College or St. Joseph's (U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam) - W,W - Assuming we play the Eagles in game two of the tournament it will be our first true test of the season. They were our best non-conference victory last year in a 7-point victory that came at Madison Square Garden. They are now a year older and more experienced too. They have enough talent that this is not a mortal lock for a victory on a neutral floor. St. Joseph's was 17-15 last year, but did not get invited to any postseason tournament. That is saying something when Oregon State was 13-17, yet was invited to (and won) the College Basketball Invitational. Expect a tight game here against a pretty good Boston College team.

11/23 vs. DePaul, Northern Iowa, East Carolina, or Tennessee (U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam) - W, W, W, W - Of these four teams I think first Tennessee, then Northern Iowa is likely to meet us in the final. I think both will win their first round games, meaning we would have to lose to SDSU to play DePaul or East Carolina. That won't happen. Northern Iowa fought us hard in the first round of last year's NCAA's, but their two best players in Adam Koch and Jordan Eglseder are gone. Tennessee is probably the favorite to make it to the final, and playing them will be easier than Boston College. Sorry SEC, but you suck at basketball unless you are Kentucky (historically) or Florida (more recently). Both of those programs were down last year. I think I would fear the Tennessee women's program more. And yes, I know they are ranked 11th. I don't care.

We're supposed to take this seriously? Would Matt Painter ever do this?

11/28 vs. Central Michigan - W - A 12-19 MAC has no chance of beating us in Mackey Arena unless we are bored or disinterested. Maybe Dan LeFevour will play and make it a game.

12/1 vs. Wake Forest - W - This is another test against a solid ACC team. Wake is always dangerous in the first half of the season, so we had best be careful. They usually don't fall apart until midway through the ACC season. I give you last year as an example. They started 16-0 and were ranked number one. They lost to Virginia Tech at home, dropped four of their following eight games, then got drilled in round one by... Cleveland State. I know the Vikings are a good team, but that was embarrassing for all major conference basketball teams.

12/5 vs. Buffalo - W - Though this kind of is our Wooden opponent since we moved Ball State to the game at Conseco, the Bulls are a better team. They were 21-12 last year and won the MAC regular season title. We still should win, but it will be closer than people think.

12/9 vs. Valparaiso - W - Mmmmmm, cupcakes. See the same explanation for Central Michigan. I will be excited to see how former Kokomo Wildkat Brandon Wood performs in his closest game to home.

12/12 at Alabama - W - If Alabama is worth anything they will be undefeated prior to this game. They play absolutely no one. We, however, will be battle tested already. This is either a trap game or one in which we exert our will.

12/19 vs. Ball State (Conseco Fieldhouse) - W - I admit, this is not the best game for the Wooden Tradition. We handled Ball State last year at Ball State and two years ago at Mackey. They are getting better, but they are not on the level where they can compete with top 10 teams yet.

12/22 vs. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville - W - Here is how major college basketball teams rank opponents on their level of worry based on name alone:

Toughest: State U.

                        City U. (or College)

                        Directional State U.

                        State (Hyphen) City U.

Easiest: Directional State (Hyphen) City U.

Need I say more?

12/29 at Iowa - W - There shouldn't be an 0-2 conference start this year. Not when we play the consensus worst team in the league to start. Road wins will be difficult in conference play this year. We have to get this easy one.

1/1 vs. West Virginia - W - They are #9 in the preseason poll, so all eyes will be on this one. Another key factor to remember here is that this is a Christmas break game. That means no Paint Crew. You hear me alumni? You had better step up and make Mackey loud on your own. If you don't want to cheer, don't come. Since this is a Big East team Digger will automatically pick the Mountaineers by 25. Since it is New Year's Day we might steal some headlines from the college football world too. This game got a little more interesting as incoming forward Deniz Kilicli was recently suspended for 20 games, including this one.

And you thought Bruce Pearl was poorly dressed.

1/5 vs. Minnesota - W - Just a tough first home game in conference play. I expect every game in the conference this year short of Iowa to be a war. The team that defends its home courts best will win the conference.

1/9 at Wisconsin - W - Can we do the unthinkable and win three straight at the Kohl Center? No Joe Krabbenhoft says yes.

1/12 vs. Ohio State - W - Playing them at Mackey gives me tons of confidence. We took two of three from them last year, dominating the second half in both wins. I like it even better if Robbie is healthy.

1/16 at Northwestern - L - I know what you're thinking. I haven't lost my mind. We could potentially be the #1 team in the country and lose to Northwestern. Think about it though. Basketball is about matchups. Northwestern is a HORRIBLE matchup for us. We didn't handle their trap in either game last year and would have been swept had they not choked the game away in Evanston. Their style of play negates all of our advantages because they want to extend every possession and they play all the passing lanes to disrupt offensive flow. That kills us at both ends of the floor.

1/19 at Illinois - W - This is a dangerous team, but I think we grit one out in Champaign after getting humbled a bit in Evanston.

1/23 vs. Michigan - W - It is all about defending the home court for this game and the next one. That is what the entire Big Ten season will come down to. Did you defend your home court?

1/28 vs. Wisconsin - W - Maybe one of the easier home wins, but that does not mean it is an easy one. Just easier.

1/31 vs. Penn State - W - This isn't the NIT, Nittany Lions.

2/4 at Indiana - W - If we don't win at Indiana this year it will be awhile before we do it again. They will be better, but they are still too young to be taken seriously.

2/9 at Michigan State - L - I am just fine with a split, Mr. Sparty. Let's just do that and decide everything in Indianapolis first at Conseco, then at Lucas Oil. Deal?

2/13 vs. Iowa - W - If we don't win this one we don't deserve to go to the NCAA Tournament, let alone win the Big Ten.

2/17 at Ohio State - W - What is the only Big Ten basketball venue that Purdue has never won in? Value City Arena on the campus of Ohio State. We're due.

2/20-21 vs. Illinois - W - Defend the home court.

2/24 at Minnesota - L - I don't like this game and we're due for a late season stumble. The questions will arise, just before we get home and get ready for a tournament roll.

2/27-28 vs. Michigan State - W - I expect this game to decide the Big Ten regular season title. Anything less would be a shock. I have us with three losses at this point. I think someone will get MSU a couple of times before this game, so they won't be unbeaten in conference.

3/2-3-4 vs. Indiana - W - If we control our own destiny in the Big Ten there is no <expletive deleted> we lose to Indiana on Senior day.

3/6-7 at Penn State - W - If we control our own destiny in the Big Ten there is no <expletive deleted> we lose to Penn State. Not when we lost a close game playing with a six man team there last year (no Kramer or Hummel).

So yeah, I have us going 27-3 and winning at least a share of the Big Ten with a 15-3 conference record. It is a good thing we do not have to go to Michigan. Playing a horrible matchup for us like Northwestern once is also very good. Michigan State has the bad luck of getting Indiana (generally only better than Iowa) just once and they must go to Bloomington for that game. Their other one play team is Ohio State.

What do you readers think? Other predictions?

Northern Iowa was the only Valley team to make the NCAAs last season. Drake, in their only season under Keno Davis, was the only MVC squad to make it in 2008. For those of you (like me) who keep track of this kind of stuff, that's not a good trend for a conference that's used to multiple bids.

"Wait!," you say. "The Valley is a one-bid league. 2006 was an aberration."

If you look at the numbers, they tell a very different story.

In the first decade of the new century, the only two seasons when the MVC received a single bid were the last two. Sure, in some cases, one of the two bids was a bid thief who deprived a bubble team of a slot, most notably UNI's entry as 14 seed in 2004. But in most years, the Valley's entrants repaid the Committee's faith in the conference, with MVC teams recording a single win in 2001 and 2005 and multiple victories in 2002, 2006, and 2007.

The Valley even started building a reputation in the final years of the 20th century. The MVC earned multiple bids in '94, '95, '96, and '99, finishing with a .500 mark in all of those years, except for '96. Former league member Tulsa represented the conference in the Regional Semis in '94 and '95, while Missouri State reached that stage in 1999.

So, over the past 16 tournaments ('94-'09), the MVC has been a multi-bid league 12 times. The challenge for this year is to make it 13 out of 17. To help reach this goal, the conference has even entered into a challenge series with the Mountain West this year in a bid to schedule some exciting matchups and generate more attention for both leagues. (Go here to see the matchups.)

More on the teams who will attempt to make the Valley a multi-bid league again after the jump.

Now here are my picks for the 2009-10 season, presented in reverse order.

Evansville (last NCAA: 1999) The Aces climbed their way up to the middle of the Valley pack after spending most of the decade in the bottom three, but it looks very much like Marty Simmons' team will sink right back down to the bottom due to some significant losses. Most of the Aces offense has moved on, double-figure scorers Shy Ely, Jason Holsinger, and Nate Garner graduated, and freshman point guard Kaylon Williams, a truly talented passer, transferred. So, Simmons' two newcomers with experience, Valparaiso transfer Bryan Bouchie, a 6-10 center, and 6-0 point guard Monie Hudson, a late JC signee, will have to contribute immediately for UE to avoid the basement. The Purple Aces don't face a BCS school this year, but they host Butler and visit Western Kentucky.

It wasn't a good start for a team that actually knocked off Siena at the Old Spice Classic, one of the most thrilling games I saw all year. However, the Shockers recovered enough to win a game in the Valley tournament (over Missouri State) and in the CBI (over Buffalo). Marshall brings back most of his key performers from last season, including his starting backcourt of Clevin Hannah (11.2 ppg, 4.3 apg) and Toure' Murry (11 ppg, 3.8 rpg). The frontcourt is a bit thin on experience, but the presence 6-7 J.T. Durley (8.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg) provides a solid foundation. The Shockers' scorelines show their main issue, plenty of defense, but not enough scoring. If Marshall can get more points, they'll contend for a tourney bid. WSU will open their season in the CBE Classic. They'll face Pitt in Kansas City, then either Iowa or Texas.

That means 6-6 Taylor Brown and 6-9 Will Eglof, who's coming off an ACL injury, will have to be more productive this season. UNI also finished last year first in the league in field goal percentage and second in field goal percentage defense, and they should remain a solid team all-around. The Panthers face DePaul in their first game at the Paradise Jam. If they win that, they'll probably face Tennessee in the semifinals.
