Stephen Lumpkins tried the baseball thing; now he wants to do the basketball thing again.

The center left American after being drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 2011 baseball draft, and now wants to come back to fill the middle for the Eagles. The move still needs the approval of the Patriot League, a conference that isn't exactly keen on granting players extra years -- whether they come via red shirt or otherwise.

The Eagles expect that things will eventually clear the hurdles that the conference set up for Lumpkins and he will be on the floor for the team. But here at Mid-Major Madness, we don't just look at the news as reported, we go inside the numbers and find out what it really means for the program.

We started by reaching out to HoopTimeOnline.com, a site dedicated to following Patriot League hoops. Editor Chris Courogen was nice enough to provide us with his take on Lumpkins returning:

"Lumpkins return could be huge for American. The Eagles will be a very young team this season, without much depth and without a proven scorer. Lumpkins would give Jeff Jones' team all three."

So that is the good news. Lumpkins would take back some of the minutes that went to Tony Wroblicky, and presumably would be more effective in his old role.

We looked at the HOOPWAR numbers from the 2010-11 season (with Lumpkins) and the 2011-12 season (with Wroblicky filling the middle). In his junior season, Lumpkins turned in a 5.5 HW30 score, not insignificant at this level of basketball. He finished second on the team in terms of overall value, and added a 16.73 DEF100 score, good enough for tops on the team among players with significant minutes.

When Wroblicky took over last season, the minutes he turned in just didn't stack up to what Lumpkins had accomplished. Wroblicky still put up a 2.26 HW30 -- a significant improvement over the -1.0 HW30 he had in 2010-11. And his DEF100 ended at 15.0. It just wasn't what Lumpkins was able to do in the middle.

The significant thing there is that Wroblicky, while able to contend defensively -- and here Courogen gives him credit for improving over the season -- he didn't have the same scoring ability that Lumpkins brings.

Now Courogen does point out that this doesn't necessarily make American a contender for the conference title. Just adding Lumpkins to what should be a young team isn't enough to compete with the likes of Lehigh and Bucknell.

He adds this:

"If Lumpkins returns anywhere near the player he was before the year off, he will likely be the second or third best big man in the league. His presence would open things for guys on the perimeter and also for projected starting four-man Kyle Kager, a 6-8 sophomore who potentially could be the team's top scoring threat.

He does probably make them a top-four team (in the conference), which is important since the league tournament is played on home courts of the higher seed."

Bottom line, if the conference gives the OK, American moves from being an also-ran to a team with a strong inside game, and likely a chance to pull some upsets against teams that are already penciled in for the NCAA Tournament. And they get Lumpkins without him burning a scholarship. Sounds like a great deal for the Eagles.

2011 Record: 23-15 (6-12 Big Ten)

Head Coach: Tubby Smith, sixth season (103-64 at Minnesota) (491-209 overall)

Projected Returning Starters: 4

Notes: Believe it or not, Coach Tubby Smith has never had a losing overall record over his college coaching career. Smith was known for him numerous years in the SEC (2 years at Georgia and 10 years at Kentucky), but he also coached at Tulsa. Expectations were high at Kentucky, and Smith and developed the moniker of "Ten Loss Tubby". Maybe Kentucky fans didn’t appreciate the work Coach Smith did, but Minnesota fans certainly have. In eight seasons under then-Coach Dan Monson, the Gophers made the NCAA Tournament only once, while the Gophers have been to the Big Dance twice in five seasons. The past two seasons have been rough, though, as the Gophers have failed to make the NCAA Tournament – they did end up as NIT runners up in the 2011-2012 season.

BVTSB Take: Minnesota lost F Trevor Mbakwe early in the season last year. The loss created a void in the lineup, one that the Gophers were never really able to overcome. The one time Marquette transfer will be back with a sixth year of eligibility and should provide a much needed scoring boost. He averaged 13.9 points a game in the 2010-2011 season, also averaging 10.5 rebounds per game. F Rodney Williams also returns, who averaged 12.2 points per game and 5.6 rebounds last season. Fellow starters G Joe Coleman (5.8 points per game), C Elliott Eliason, G Austin Hollins (9.2 points per game and 81.5% free throw shooting), and G Andre Hollins (8.7 points per game, 37.9% three point shooting, and 90.4% free throw shooting) are also projected to return. Minnesota largely had underclassmen starting last season. The experience of a tough season combined with the leadership and health of Mbakwe should certainly boost the win total, especially in Big Ten play. Expect the Gophers to start three forwards, with Coleman likely coming off the bench. The Gophers do lose Ralph Sampson III to graduation, but his production largely dropped last year (7.9 points per game, down from 10.2 in 2010-2011). Smith adds PF Charles Buggs and SG Wally Ellenson. Minnesota will participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis, playing three games against the likes of Duke, Louisville, Memphis, Missouri, Northern Iowa, Stanford, and VCU. They will travel to Tallahassee to face Florida State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, which certainly will be tough. They also have winnable games against American, Richmond, South Dakota State, at USC, and North Dakota State. Minnesota was 12-1 in non-conference last year, but the schedule was pretty weak. Don’t expect the Gophers to match that in 2012-2013, but they won’t need to with the tougher slate. 8-9 wins isn’t out of the question though. Do expect an improvement in conference though, .500 or better is very manageable.

2012-2013 Early Projection: 18 regular season wins

What are your thoughts on Minnesota basketball? Tweet to us @BVTSB.

Conference Realignment: Boston University Moving To Patriot League

Boston College's hockey arch-rivals down the Green Line have given the Eagles one more reason to pull a Holy Cross. You know, if this big-time college football thing doesn't work out. In a somewhat surprising move, the Terriers are leaving America East for the Patriot League:

Boston University has formally accepted an invitation to join the Patriot League on July 1, 2013, for the 2013-14 academic year, Daniel H. Weiss, Chair of the Patriot League's Council of Presidents and President of Lafayette College announced Friday.

"Boston University is an outstanding addition to our membership as a private institution with a robust academic reputation and prolific athletic history," said Weiss. "This decision to add Boston University to the Patriot League mirrors the Presidents' commitment and vision to the stability and long-term positioning of the League."

Boston University will join American, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Army and Navy as full members of the Patriot League. Fordham and Georgetown are associate members in football.

Sounds like the move is motivated by a desire for increased stability and academic pedigree, even if its a wash (step down?) in terms of basketball. This move, combined with the Patriot League's move to start offering football scholarships, offers a school like BC a soft landing spot if the school ever decided to bow out of the ever-escalating college football arms race. Obligatory.

Now if only Boston U. was bringing back its football program.

We here at Blogger So Dear are excited to find out that Madison Jones, the top unsigned point guard left in the class of 2012, has decided to play his college basketball at Wake Forest.

His signing will bring much needed depth to a depleted backcourt and Madison will likely see plenty of time behind Codi Miller-McIntyre and C.J Harris at the 1 and 2 spot.

The news was made obvious on Twitter after C.J Paul and Aaron Rountree sent him "congrats" tweets:

Jones made his official visit to Wake Forest on Thursday and that was enough to commit this morning.

He was also being pursued heavily by Maryland and Richmond after having early offers from Seton Hall, American and Georgia Southern.

Information about Jones can be found here in an article we wrote last week when we first heard about our renewed interest, along with his ESPN profile

For the first round of the College Insiders Tournament Buffalo will travel to Washington to take on American University of the Patriot league. The Eagles hired Jeff Jones after Virginia let him go in 1998. During his 11 years at AU he helped the team transition from the Colonial Athletic Association to the Patriot league.

Since 2001 the Eagles have won the Patriot League regular season title four times. Twice, during those seasons, they went on to win the conference tournament. Both times they were ejected in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They did manage to give #4 Villanova a scare, leading their 2009 first round game until late into the second half.

This will be the first meeting in nearly forty years. The Eagles hold a 3-1 advantage in the series with their last win in 1973. Buffalo's last win against AU was in 1964.

This season the Eagles have struggled a bit. Despite winning 20 games their record against top 200 teams is just 9-7. Overall they had about the 40th weakest schedule in College Basketball this year. Despite the unimpressive looking resume going 13-1 at home is impressive. Their best win was a home game against Saint Joes (RPI 68) while their worst came against Maryland-Eastern (RPI 319).

That loss meant no NIT, and a conference tournament loss to Leigh eliminated them from a third appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Like he did at Virginia, and for 11 years at American Jones has set up his team so they live or die on their outside shooting. The Eagles are 10th in the nation in three point percentage. Blake Jolivette, their fourth leading scorer, is shooting fifty percent beyond the arch (17/34). The Eagles have three other major contributors shooting better than forty percent from long range.

Charles Hinkle is their main scoring threat. The senior from Los Alamitos is putting up 18 points a game. He shoots about a third of his shots from three point territory and has a great inside Jumper. Outside he is shooting better than 40%.

17.8

It's particularly important for American to come out shooting well. Their offensive rebounding hovers around 25% near the bottom ten percent of all NCAA division one schools. Combine that with UB being near the top 15% of defensive rebounding nationally and the narrative of this game could very well be as simple as this.

If Buffalo can pressure AU into taking suspect shots they will probably beat them.

The only major rebounding threat the Eagles have on the offensive glass is Tony Wroblicky. Where it could go south is if the Eagles are allowed good looks. If they get hot from outside up with AU can be very difficult.

Despite the struggles on the offensive side AU hits the glass well as a defense. They are 100th nationally in defensive rebounding percentage with about five players who pull down two and a half or more defensive rebounds per game.

On paper this is a game that the Bulls should be able to control. UB has lost to only one team with an RPI rank of below 108 (Miami 246) and AU has really struggles with top 150 teams.

The season resume and the fact that the Eagles generally play to our strengths bodes well. Despite that the Eagles do have talent and big game experience on their roster.

As UB found out the hard way some nights those battle tested experienced players can play at an amazing level..

If Hinkle or Jolivette get inhumanly hot from the outside UB needs to be able to keep the game close until they cool off. Hot shooting teams are Kryptonite to a zone defense, so it will be up to the offense to carry Buffalo. If UB comes out flat AU connects on enough three point shots The Bulls could find themselves over a barrel in the second half.

The X factor it Buffalo's Agenda. It remains to be seen if Coach Witherspoon will be playing to win with his seniors or trying to get the younger players experience. Last year, with only one senior on the roster, UB won two games in the CIT before falling to Iona. This year the Bulls are the second ranked team in the field and should be able to put together another little run, if that's what they are trying to do.

There is no way to sugar coat that this is not the place we wanted to be. In an ideal world Watt does not get that border line Technical, or Filzen hits the last second three. In a near ideal world an RPI of 78 would have been enough to snag an NIT at large bit.

So we know were not in an ideal world. But this is an opportunity. The CIT is the most oddish tournament around so it has something of a poor reputation. I think that the oddities, no matter how maligned, make it a better tournament than the CBI.

The Bulls took the bid which had been intended for the University of Northern Iowa. The Panthers got a ticket to the NIT and UB was available, one of the better teams still around.

18–16

247

So here is the field for this years College Insiders Tournament.

32 teams and so it grows.

Personally I kind of liked last seasons format.

The field of was 24 is whittled down to 12 and the top 4 seeds remaining get their bye. They then take on the four teams who get out of round two. Buffalo has the second highest RPI in the bracket so it's likely that if UB knocks off American they will get a pass into the quarter finals.

This year is seems the CIT expanded its field to 32 and eliminated the byes.

Probably an hour before the 2012 CIT field was announced, the field was going to be 24 teams and follow the same format as last year. And then they announced a 32-team field. Again ... why not? It's their tournament. They can do what they please. Not enough tournaments wing it, if you ask me. -- Matt Sussman (Hustle Belt)

So that little quirk is gone. Mores the pity..

Home games are bought, not earned

It's a frustrating aspect of both the CBI and the CIT because the best teams often take to the road. Had we been matched up with Albany or Manhattan (who play each other in the first round) travels not a big deal. But given we go to DC it might cut down on how many fans make the trip.

The CIT uses the money paid out by home teams to help fund travel for the road teams. In effect UB is not spending a lot of money on their post season play. Usually the home games are bought up by the teams who average four thousand or more fans per game.

Reseeding after rounds

The CIT is not a true bracket. After the first round the brackets are shuffled and reseeded for two purposes. First to reduce travel and bring games close to their fan bases. If Buffalo wins and Albany or Manhattan makes are paying for a second round home game I suspect we will face them.

It also allows for maintaining a path for the stronger teams in which you don't have your best teams face off early in the competition. It's really the same objective the MAC had in it's new conference tournament and most people agree that everything in Cleveland played out nicely.

Who knows if UB wins, and is willing to buy maybe we can host Albany?

No Big Six Teams

Perhaps the most common slam on the CIT is fact they do not take Big Six Teams. The mid-major only status of the competition makes many basketball fans think of this as the "Small Time" tournament. Those critics are ignoring two major issues.

The first is that the Big 6 have a history of snubbing anything but the NCAA and the NIT. Heck some of them have even spurned the NIT. There is no guarantee that if you invite a school who failed to make the NIT or NCAA they would even compete.

Secondly those teams who might take up an invitation are not exactly the power houses of the world. Who's left? In the ACC you have 9-22 Boston College. Maybe the Big 10's 12-20 Penn State? Are we really doing worse with Coastal Carolina than we would be with those "Big Name" teams?

This could be fun... again!

Last season making the CIT was a pleasant surprise, this year is came after a good deal of heart brake but hopefully the results are the same. Some wins, some fun, and a chance to let our seniors wear the Blue and White for another week or so.

For the second year in a row the Buffalo Bulls. This year UB starts off by taking on American at Wednesday 7:30pm.

So missing the NCAA is heartbreaking, missing the NIT is disappointing and missing the CBI is "meh".

Last year the CIT expended its field from 16 to 24 teams. Typically when you have an off number of teams in a tournament you give a by round right off the bat. The CIT is doing things a bit differently.

The top four seeded teams of the first round will sit out the second round while the rest of the filed will be rearranged and re-seeded. In years past the CIT has tried to pair up schools that are geographically close to help out attendance and keep travel cost down.

It's generally recognized as the 'lowest' of the NCAA tournaments but with so much Chaos in conference tournaments the NIT filled up quick. The difference between the CBI and the CIT is that the CIT does not invite from the Big6 Conferences. Liek the CIB however home games are bought.

Today is a Super Saturday of action and there are whole lot of games that feature Justin Edwards, Andrew Nicholson, Kris Joseph, Devoe and Olu, Ty Murray, Laurent Rivard and a great group of ladies that are looking to have big showings all right here in today's NC-Double-Eh schedule ...

12:00pm Alabama @ Kentucky

12:00pm Wright State @ Detroit

1:00pm Stony Brook @ Maine - Maine has lost their last four games and will be looking to get their third conference win. In the Bears' loss to Hartford this past Thursday, Justin Edwards was held to 9 points and 4-of-13 from the field. The last time he scored single digits last he went for 14 points as well as 6 rebounds and 4.3 assists over his next five games. Edwards' teammate Mike Allison has been having a quietly efficient season so far and has averaged 8.5 points, 4.8 boards and 2.5 blocks in his last four games.

2:00pm Missouri @ Baylor

2:00pm Michigan @ Arkansas

2:00pm Arkansas-Little Rock @ Western Kentucky

2:00pm Fordham @ St. Bonaventure - Andrew Nicholson has had his best two game stretch last week where he was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week (and NC-Double-Eh Player of the Week also if you didn't know). This game against Fordham could be a game where he extends his incredible play but he will be going up against Chris Gaston who is one of the hidden post gems in the NCAA. This will be a great matchup to see if Nicholson can handle a smaller more mobile player in the post on D. It could be a game that needs to be watched.

3:00pm Western Carolina @ Appalachian State

3:00pm Indiana State @ Creighton

4:00pm Kansas @ Texas - I wouldn't expect Texas to win this game against Kansas, or even put up a very big fight really, but I would expect Myck Kabongo to go for his third straight double-double. In losses to Missouri and Kansas State he's averaging 13 points and 10 assists in 38 minutes.

4:00pm North Carolina Central @ Coppin State

4:00pm Northeastern @ Drexel

4:00pm Florida A&M @ Maryland-Eastern Shore

4:00pm UCLA @ Oregon - Devoe Joseph has been playing great for a seemingly resurgent Oregon team. Nuff said. His teammate Olu Ashaolu has put in another set of back-to-back double digit games (13 and 11 respectively) and he could be up for another today, particularly with a more depleted UCLA team.

4:30pm San Francisco @ Portland

5:00pm Arizona State @ Utah

5:00pm Massachusetts @ Richmond

5:00pm Iowa State @ Texas Tech

6:00pm Stanford @ Washington

6:00pm Marshall @ Southern Miss

6:00pm Syracuse @ Notre Dame - Syracuse is one of only two undefeated teams left and this may be a win for them with Notre Dame having lost their star player Tom Ambromaitis earlier this year. The Irish are coming off two close loses, relatively speaking, to Rutgers and UConn and could make this a tough win from the Orange. Kris Joseph, despite not being a daily go-to player for Syracuse, has still managed to make a mid season Wooden Award list so maybe this could be a big game for him.

6:05pm California @ Washington State

7:00pm Charlotte @ George Washington

7:00pm Cornell @ Columbia

7:00pm Marquette @ Providence

7:00pm Harvard @ Dartmouth - In Harvard's last two games, Laurent Rivard has started both contests and has seemingly flourished. In the two Crimson wins, he averaged 16 points (including 7 threes), 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a block which are substantial increases from his season averages. He could have a similar game tonight against a Dartmouth that is limping through their season.

7:00pm Holy Cross @ Bucknell

7:00pm Citadel @ Davidson

7:00pm Chattanooga @ Elon

7:00pm Tennessee-Martin @ Morehead State

7:00pm LIU Brooklyn @ Wagner - Tyler Murray had 19 points in Wagner's last win Thursday over St. Francis (NY) which coincides with the team's longest winning streak in about 23 years. His point total is his highest since the beginning of December when he dropped 19 in the 78-73 loss to LIU Brooklyn so this could be a game that will have special intensity.

8:00pm Missouri State @ Bradley

8:00pm Duquesne @ Saint Louis

8:00pm Tulsa @ Rice

8:00pm San Diego @ Gonzaga - With the West Coast Conference not being a cakewalk for Gonzaga for the first time in a long time, this game against San Diego will be important. The Zags will need every win they can get before they meet Saint Mary's and BYU and both Kevin Pangos and Rob Sacre will need to play huge roles, Sacre in particular. Sacre had his highest point total against San Francisco (14) since his 16 point effort against Michigan State December 10. With the season hitting high conference time, he'll need to really pick up his game and playing with more confidence is a start.

8:00pm South Dakota State @ North Dakota State

8:30pm Western Illinois @ South Dakota

9:00pm Southeast Missouri State @ Tennessee Tech

9:05pm Northern Colorado @ Montana State

9:05pm Northern Arizona @ Idaho State

9:05pm North Dakota @ Utah Valley

10:00pm Cal State Fullerton @ UC Irvine

11:00pm Saint Mary's @ Santa Clara

11:05pm Utah State @ Idaho

12:00am New Mexico State @ Hawaii - If you happen to be at home late tonight, this is the game for you. With Christian Kabongo now transferring, Hernst Laroche has been picking up the scoring slack for New Mexico State averaging 14.5 points. Both Tyrone Watson and Daniel Mulling have also been starting and have been playing great as well in supporting roles.

And here is where the women are playing today ...

12:00pm Texas @ Oklahoma

1:00pm Villanova @ Notre Dame - In Notre Dame's last win over Pittsburgh, a game that the Irish won by 76 by the way, managed 19 points on 8-of-9, including 2 threes, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in a very efficient 17 minutes off the bench. What can she do today?

1:00pm American @ Army

1:00pm Quinnipiac @ Bryant - Bryant's Naana Ankoma-Mensa has averaged 13.7 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals in her last three games. Could this be another one of those games?

2:00pm St. John's @ Cincinnati

2:00pm George Washington @ Duquesne

2:00pm Wagner @ St. Francis (NY)

3:00pm Utah Valley @ North Dakota

3:00pm Cleveland State @ Green Bay

3:00pm Alabama State @ Alcorn State

3:00pm Wright State @ Detroit

3:00pm Robert Morris @ Monmouth

4:00pm Utah @ Arizona State - Utah's Michelle Plouffe and Taryn Wicijowski seem to be playing a game of can you top that which is great for the Utes who need everything that these two can give them. Last game against California it was Plouffe who put up 19 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a block in 38 minutes of action. Will it be Wicijowski's turn today?

4:00pm Portland @ BYU

4:30pm St. Francis (PA) @ Fairleigh Dickinson

5:00pm Gonzaga @ San Diego

7:00pm Colgate @ Navy

7:00pm UC Santa Barbara @ Cal State Northridge

8:00pm Providence @ Marquette - Before Katherine Plouffe was held to 6 points against Georgetown this past Wednesday but before that she was averaging 18 points in her three games prior. She was also averaging 9.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals in that span also. Oddly enough, before that three game stretch she was held to 2 points. Will another strong stretch start now?

9:00pm TCU @ Boise State

10:00pm New Mexico State @ Hawaii

Today we have some games for you to check out that include a gunner for Bucknell and everyone's favorite PG at Texas. Find out who else is playing today right here ...

Remember that you can find the full list of players playing in Division 1 right here.

7:00pm Richmond @ George Washington - George Washington's Dwayne Smith was hampered by injury early this season after starting all last year and is coming on of late. In his last five games he's averaged 17.2 minutes and has upped his numbers to 6 points, 5.2 rebounds and a steal. He's looking better as this season goes on and could be starting tonight against Richmond.

7:00pm Georgia State @ Northeastern

7:00pm Drexel @ Hofstra

7:00pm Bucknell @ Lehigh - After slumping for the early part of the season, Bryson Johnson has been finally making his shots. He's still battling consistency and his coming off the bench seems to have worked well for him. He's averaging 10.2 points in his last five and he's playing over 25 minutes a game also.

7:30pm Marshall @ West Virginia

8:00pm UAB @ Rice

8:05pm Drake @ Southern Illinois

8:05pm Creighton @ Missouri State

9:00pm Oklahoma State @ Iowa State

9:00pm Texas @ Kansas State - Texas' Myck Kabongo has been a fighting through some tough games in the last couple of weeks but in his last game against a ranked Missouri team he got his first career double-double going for 12 points and 10 assists in a losing cause. Let's see if he can follow that up tonight against a tough Kansas State team.

And here is where the women are playing tonight ...

11:45am Dayton @ Massachusetts - You probably missed this game like I did because you were at work or school or sleeping. It's too bad because there are two Canadian ladies on UMass that play big minutes.

4:00pm Duquesne @ Temple - Two games ago, Duquesne's Wumi Agunbiade was held to single digit scoring against St. Bonaventure. Last game she went for 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and the last time she scored 10 or more points after a single digit game she went for fourteen straight games and managed to get a career high in scoring along the way. This could be the start of another streak today.

7:00pm Navy @ American

7:00pm George Washington @ Rhode Island

7:00pm Lehigh @ Bucknell

7:00pm Army @ Colgate

8:00pm Iowa State @ Texas

8:00pm Baylor @ Texas Tech
