College Football Rankings, Week 8: Appalachian State Leads New-Look FCS Top 10; JMU Drops To No. 11

Appalachian State (6-0) remained the No. 1 team in the Week 8 edition of The Sports Network FCS Top-25 College Football Poll. It's the third straight week in which the Mountaineers have been atop the rankings, followed by No. 2 Delaware and No. 3 Jacksonville State. All three school are undefeated this season (6-0, 7-0 and 7-0, respectively).

William & Mary and Stephen F. Austin (with its lone first-place vote) round out the top-five.

The four remaining top-ten teams are all new: Montana jumped from No. 11 to No. 7; Eastern Washington is now No. 8; Wofford improved to No. 0; New Hampshire went from No. 16 to No. 10 on the strength of their win over then-ranked No. 7 James Madison -- the Dukes fell to No. 11.

Bethune-Cookman, the other undefeated FCS program, had the biggest move of the week, jumping nine spots to No. 14 after it beat then-No. 10 South Carolina State, ending their 21-game MEAC win streak in the process.

And yes, the Colonial Athletic Association continued its overall awesomeness: seven of the top-16 teams are from the CAA, including three of the top-six and four in the top-ten.

Full rankings of The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top-25 College Football Poll for Week 8 (as voted on by the sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters and writers) are as follows (first-place votes included):

College Football Rankings: The Winners And Losers In The Week 8 Polls

The best part of the college football polls every week is the discussion they bring. With that in mind, a rundown of the winners and losers from this week's rankings.

Winners

Oregon is the big winner in the Week 8 polls. The Ducks, idle this week, claim the top spot in both major polls for the first time in school history.

Boise State also gets a win this week. The Broncos have moved into the top two for the first time in school history, and are high enough that inertia may help their standing in the BCS rankings as the season progresses.

It's also nice to see Michigan State rewarded with a top-ten ranking for a solid season, but even more useful for the Big Ten for Ohio State and Wisconsin to be rated highly despite a loss. The Spartans and Buckeyes don't meet this season, and the other two matchups between the three teams have already happened, meaning none of them can knock each other out of the top ten and deny the Big Ten a lucrative BCS at-large berth.

Losers

The biggest loser this week is Nebraska which falls from the top five to out of the top 10 after losing at home to Texas. The Huskers are still the second-highest-ranked Big 12 team, but their chances at a BCS title all but evaporated yesterday in Lincoln.

TCU also gets shafted in the Week 8 polls, but it's not their fault: Oklahoma sliding up is no real reflection on the Horned Frogs. It does, however, mean that TCU is not in line to be competing for a BCS National Championship even if one of the top three teams lose.

And of course, the coaches show up in the losers category for, among other issues, continuing to overrate Oklahoma State and Missouri, slotting Wisconsin behind Ohio State, and elevating West Virginia six spots mostly because of other teams' losses.

College Football Rankings: Comparing The Week 8 Polls

The only glaring differences in the Week 8 USA Today and Week 8 AP Poll have to do with yesterday's biggest upset and the respect given to one Pac-10 school.

In the USA Today poll, Wisconsin is one spot behind Ohio State despite beating the Buckeyes on Saturday; in the AP Poll, the Badgers are one spot ahead. And while the USA Today poll has Arizona ranked near the bottom of the top 20, the AP Poll slides the Wildcats in ahead of unbeatens Oklahoma State and Missouri.

Both polls rank the same 25 teams.

College Football Rankings: BCS Standings Should Love Boise State

Our Ben Prather has published his final projections for the first official BCS standings of the 2010 season, and he likes Boise State to claim the top spot.

Boise State lead the simulated standings this week and only Ohio State had any hope of passing them this week. That obviously did not happen. This would be the first time a team from outside the six automatic qualifying conferences holds the number one spot in the official BCS standings.

Prather's projected top five in the BCS rankings on October 17th:

No. 1 Boise State
No. 2 Oregon
No. 3 TCU
No. 4 Oklahoma
No. 5 Auburn

College Football Rankings: Non-BCS Schools Fare Well In Week 8 USA Today Poll

The non-BCS conferences, combined, might be the most impressive "conference" in the USA Today coaches poll for Week 8.

Three teams appear in the poll, and all three are in the top nine. And it certainly doesn't hurt Boise State's push to be atop the BCS rankings for the Broncos to be ranked second in this poll.

Full non-BCS rankings:

- No. 2 Boise State
- No. 4 TCU

College Football Rankings: Big Ten Lead By Michigan State, Wisconsin In USA Today Poll

The Big Ten may not have the top-ranked team anymore, but four teams in the top 12 in the USA Today coaches poll for Week 8 makes the conference formidable.

Interestingly, Wisconsin, which beat Ohio State, is ranked one spot behind it.

Full Big Ten rankings:

- No. 8 Michigan State
- No. 10 Ohio State

- No. 12 Iowa

College Football Rankings: West Virginia Remains Lone Ranked Big East Team

The Big East has just one team ranked in the Week 8 USA Today poll.

It's West Virginia, ranked 19th, which also makes the biggest jump of the poll, moving six spots from last week's 25th rung. But don't give the Mountaineers too much credit: that jump is mostly a product of three teams just ahead of them losing, and SEC squads South Carolina and Arkansas sustaining their second losses.

College Football Rankings: Big 12 Unbeatens Rise In USA Today Poll

The Big 12 has more undefeated teams left than any other conference, and it shows in the Week 8 USA Today poll.

Oklahoma moves up to third, partly thanks to Nebraska's loss, and will meet one of the two other undefeated teams, 16th-ranked Missouri, next Saturday. Texas re-enters the poll after upsetting Nebraska.

Full Big 12 rankings:

College Football Rankings: Virginia Tech Re-Enters Poll For ACC

The ACC doesn't have a team in the top 15 of the USA Today coaches poll for Week 8, but their three teams are the ACC's biggest names.

Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Miami all appear in the poll. For Virginia Tech, it's a nice turnaround from a season that seemed doomed when the Hokies fell to James Madison.

College Football Rankings: Wisconsin's Big Win Leads To Big Jump In USA Today Poll

The biggest falls belong to Ohio State and Nebraska, both recipients of their first losses on Saturday, who fell nine spots each. The Buckeyes went from first to 10th, and the Huskers from fourth to 13th.
