Wisconsin Drops School-Record 83 Points On Indiana: 'Wanted To Make Sure We Weren't Running Up The Score'

Wisconsin's hopes of making a BCS National Championship Game rely on a few losses that would install the Badgers as the nation's best one-loss team. But it can't hurt to hang 83 points on Indiana, right?

That's what the Badgers did today, scoring on all of their 12 possessions in an 83-20 evisceration of the Hoosiers. That sort of carnage does not come in a terribly merciful manner — and Wisconsin's included a 73-yard touchdown strike from backup quarterback Jon Budmayr to backup wide receiver Jared Abbrederis in the fourth quarter — but our Bucky's 5th Quarter quotes head coach Bret Bielema as saying "I wanted to make sure we weren't running up the score."

That may be a hard pill to swallow for Indiana fans, especially because the Badgers could have beaten the Hoosiers with only their 24 fourth-quarter points, but it appears as if Indiana would have been granted mercy at 76-20 if not for a deft scramble by backup to the backup Nate Tice.

Bielema may face charges of running up the score for years to come after this sort of lopsided affair, but tying a school record for points against a conference foe is a great way of getting poll voters' attention. And he already took heat after a two-pointer against Minnesota earlier this year; making statements with points isn't new for these Badgers.
