Conference USA Championship Game, UCF Vs. SMU: Mustangs A Mess

The fourth quarter of the 2010 Conference USA title game is nasty, brutish, and short. We rejoin our heroes in Orlando just in time to see Jeff Godfrey get sacked and the Knights punt it away. And here comes SMU, playing some actual football!

Kyle Padron and Zach Line go back to work, and with several mid-range passes and a handful of crucial short-yardage gains, they're in scoring position. Padron hits Aldrick Robinson from 22 yards out for what will be SMU's only score of the game. Over nine minutes remain in the game, but the action is all but over. UCF goes three-and-out thanks to a sack. Padron first fumbles thanks to a sack on SMU's next drive; Line recovers but Padron is intercepted two plays later. Nick Cattoi misses a responding 52-yard field goal for the Knights. SMU goes completely to pieces and gives up, by our rough count, five sacks on their last drive, and that's all from Orlando. Central Florida takes the C-USA title with a 17-7 victory.

The Knights' likely postseason opponent at this point will be Georgia in the Liberty Bowl. Watching George O'Leary's band of standups attempt to defend Aaron Murray should make for interesting television, to say the least. Conference USA Championship Game, UCF Vs. SMU: Knights Hang On To 17-0 Shutout Lead

UCF has flirted with a permanent spot in the national rankings this year, and their stalwart defense is on full display today in Orlando. They've got help, however: The third quarter of the 2010 Conference USA Championship Game kicks off with a fast foot-shooting on the part of SMU. On a punt from their own 25, Central Florida's returner muffs the catch, but the Knights recover the ball and eat five minutes off the clock with a drive capped by a 36-yard Latavius Murray touchdown. With 6:30 on the clock in the third quarter, UCF leads SMU, 17-0.

The next drive goes even worse for the flailing Mustangs. Zach Line and Kyle Padron move the ball in fits and starts, but Padron gets bogged down by the Knights' keen defense, first throwing two incomplete passes and then getting a third attempt intercepted deep in UCF territory. The Knights have reversed field and are driving at midfield as the third quarter ends. Central Florida leads SMU, 17-0.

Conference USA Championship Game, UCF Vs. SMU: Knights Take 10-0 Lead Into Halftime

We rejoin the 2010 Conference USA Championship Game with the underdog SMU Mustangs in mid-drive. Two promising big plays (a 23-yard run by Zach Line and a 13-yard pass from Kyle Padron to Darius Johnson) move the ball nicely, but two straight incomplete passes and largely ineffectual rushing stall the drive in mid-UCF territory, and the Mustangs are prevented from getting on the board by a 47-yard field goal attempt on the part of Matt Szymanski that sails wide.

Two short and fruitless drives are traded, and the Knights saddle up at their own 1-yard line. The mid-range passing game is employed to great effect, as Jeff Godfrey completes passes of 10, 13, 16, 13, and 21 yards to Kamar Aiken and Brian Watters. A 15-yard penalty backs them up from SMU's 3-yard line, and the Knights must settle for a 29-yard field goal from Nick Cattoi.

At the half, Central Florida leads SMU, 10-0.

Conference USA Championship Game, UCF Vs. SMU: Knights Control First Quarter With 7-0 Lead

We're off to a rollicking start here in Orlando for the Conference USA Championship Game. The Knights receive to open play, and the first drive is all Latavius Murray and Jeff Godfrey. The  Knight's No. 1 runner and quarterback combine for a rush-heavy, six-minute drive aided by a 15-yard SMU penalty and a 16-yard reception by Murray. With 8:11 remaining in the first quarter, the duo connect on a five-yard touchdown strike, and Central Florida goes up 7-0.

That's about all the action we're going to see this quarter. Kyle Padron completes a 37-yard pass to Darius Johnson on SMU's first play from scrimmage, but follows that up with back-to-back incompletions, and the Knights' answering drive, another Murray-Godfrey affair, stalls out with a sack barely into Mustang territory. SMU gets off one play before the clock hits 00:00, and the first quarter draws to a close with the Knights leading the Mustangs, 7-0.
