2011 Gator Bowl Game: Time, Location, History And More

To help prime you for the New Year's Day college football-gasm, we've compiled this handy list of fun factoids concerning the 2011 Gator Bowl.

Proper name: The Gator Bowl. No sponsor names in the bowl name itself, but Progressive Insurance, new for 2011, is featured prominently in the Gator Bowl logo.

Setting: It used to be played at the Gator Bowl, but now EverBank Field houses the game. Same site, new stadium, new name.

Traditional conference pairing: The SEC versus the Big Ten.

2011 matchup: The 8-4 Mississippi State Bulldogs and the 7-5 Michigan Wolverines.

Announcers: Mike Patrick, Craig James and Todd Harris. This should be a barrel of laughs.

Neatest fact: Not sure if it's neatest, but it is tragic. In 1963, the Hotel Roosevelt caught fire during the post-Gator Bowl party, resulting in 22 deaths.

Closest finish: A 20-20 tie between Maryland and Georgia in 1948 and a 17-17 tie between Florida State and Penn State in 1967.

Most lopsided finish: Syracuse blanked Clemson in 1996, 41-0.

Tidbits of interest: The 2010 Gator Bowl MVPs were E.J. Manuel for Florida State and Noel Divine for West Virginia. Mississippi State is making its first appearance in the Gator Bowl. Michigan is making its third appearance in the bowl and is 1-1 in previous appearances.

The 2011 Gator Bowl kicks off at 1:30 p.m. EST, Saturday, Jan. 1. The game will be televised on ESPN2. For a complete list of bowls, browse our 2010 college football postseason schedule.
