Florida Officially In Outback Bowl, Will Face Penn State

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Florida Gators probably didn't intend for their season to end just down the road in Tampa. But that's exactly what they'll do after accepting a bid to the Outback Bowl.

The Outback Bowl has hosted the Gators more than a few times in recent years — Florida played in the game in 2002, 2003, and 2005 — and Florida tends to end up in its home state when the Gators aren't in a BCS bowl.

Furthermore, Florida suiting up against Penn State in the bowl, which will take place on New Year's Day at Raymond James Stadium.

The game will pit Urban Meyer against Joe Paterno for the first time, and match Florida and Penn State in a bowl game for the first time since 1997. The Gators won that year's matchup in the Florida Citrus Bowl, beating the Nittany Lions 21-6 and holding a team without suspended running back Curtis Enis in check.
