The Pittsburgh Panthers have officially accepted a berth to the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama. The game will take place January 8.
It's a fitting pairing: Pitt's been one of the more inscrutable teams in college football all year, capable of looking unstoppable when Dion Lewis and Ray Graham are running well, and no one really knows what BBVA Compass even means.
If you're in that boat, consider this your crash course: BBVA Compass is a financial company headquartered in Birmingham that is actually a subsidiary of the larger Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, a multinational Spanish bank with billions in yearly revenue.
Once you know all this, it's a little less sensible for the bank, which also sponsors Spanish basketball and soccer teams and has a sponsorship deal with the NBA, to have its name attached to a bowl that would feature a mid-tier Big East team. Just add it to the list of enigmas attached to this Pittsburgh program.
