Just going to throw this true fact out and then get out of its way, so as not to be trampled by a thundering herd of greatness: Luther Campbell has been hired as defensive coordinator for Miami Northwestern High School. Yes, that's Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell of 2 Live Crew fame, the notorious (but allegedly reformed!) Miami Hurricanes booster and social media afficionado, who's also been involved in youth football in Miami for over 25 years now, and has spent multiple seasons as a linebackers coach at Miami Central High School.
Last spring, SB Nation's Every Day Should Be Saturday interviewed Campbell, where he shared some trade secrets of his coaching game, including treating his peewee players like college kids during game prep:
LC: I train my high school kids the same way I trained my youth kids: by giving them as much information as they can handle. [...] You've got to teach them football, you've got to get them to get their books in class, and you've got to get them to start watching film--
OS: Wait, wait. You got your youth football teams to watch film?
LC: Oh, yeah. My kids in the park watched film. All my kids learn to watch film. When my kids leave our team, they're going to start in high school.
Where he's headed is no pushover program: They've had a couple down seasons, but Northwestern is a South Florida powerhouse, with multiple state championships and a celebrated victory over legendary Southlake Carroll High for the national championship in 2007. It's produced such gridiron standouts as Antonio Bryant, Torrie Cox, and a heaping handful of players currently appearing on the Miami Hurricanes roster. This will be a professional leap for Campbell, but be assured it will not be boring.
